    I recently discovered Food Fight for the 7800. What a great game!

    I was a kid with Atari 7800 in a small town in Italy. I literally didn’t know no one with that consolle (that I loved). So I felt lonely and sad for not sharing the joy from that games. No one understood what I was talking about!! I like the fact that you can understand my love and joy for those games: I weren’t wrong!
    Btw my favorite are Midnight Mutants and Basket Browl

    Would you consider reviewing some of the homebrew titles that are out and coming out for the 7800. Some of them look amazing! I’d also like to see where you would rank them. Even if you don’t want to officially rank them you could say if I did rank 7800 homebrew titles this one would be a top 10 or fall somewhere in the 20s etc. love your 7800 videos thank you!

    Hat Trick had a good zamboni driver. He just suffered from being in the same era as the Ice Hockey zamboni driver who worked so much faster: He did solid work though if you assumed that he was driving a zamboni in the minors

    If only the 7800 had a network adapter, me and my single player experience with all of these games could connect to the No Swear Gamers’ experience and we could enjoy the two player version of the games that were meant to be played by two players. I mean, I’ve got to assume that’s what they were going for with some of these because the one player experience is so painful

    Nice video, and nice rankings Phil! Since I'll be getting an Atari 7800 in the not too distant future this has definitely given me some insights on which games to prioritize collecting as I go along.

    Thanks for sharing your rankings! Now I feel like I know you just a tad better. You also reminded me that the 7800, NES, and SMS shared wo titles in common with Double Dragon and Rampage.

    Great list!
    I owned eleven 7800 games growing up. My rankings of those games would look similar to yours. Except I’d rank Ms PacMan as my #1, followed by Food Fight at #2 (out of the 11, whereas No Swear has his at #6 and #2 of 58, respectively). Mario Bros, DK Jr and Rampage would have rounded out my top five.
    I had a blast playing Impossible Mission, just thought it was hard, not broken. I liked Tomcat F-14, but that’s not a game that has aged well. Both Pole Position II and One-on-One saw a lot of action, but wouldn’t scratch the top of my personal list.
    I owned both Crack’d and Kareteka. I got Crack’d as a surprise birthday gift, having never heard of it, and I found it pretty fun. Kareteka I begged to get for Christmas in 1989 and got it. Arguably Kareteka is the most disappointing video game I’ve ever owned. My personal rankings would have had Crack’d at #10 and a very distant last Kareteka at #11; in fact, I’d rank it lower than the ten 2800 games I owned. No Swear Gamer has those two switched, but he has both ranked low as they should be....
    Fun memories. Thanks for posting.

    5:54 - Multiple layers of parallax scrolling.
    Can someone explain how this was possible on the 7800?

    Did the 7800 use the same sound chip as the 2600?

    • @patsfan4life
      @patsfan4life 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joe Boo not exactly...... they basically started with a chip specifically engineered for the backwards compatibility aspect, but then they never added an additional (modern) chip.....

    • @JohnCrawford1979
      @JohnCrawford1979 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, the backwards compatibility was nice, but had it's drawbacks as the 7800 never felt truly 8-bit. At least it didn't seem to compete well with the NES, nor even the Master System, which was probably the most technically advanced of the 8-bit consoles. If the Pokie chip was more accessible, it might have had a chance. But, all around, it was a beast to develop for, at least from what I've heard.

    F18 Hornet is pretty neat for an early Atari game. Came a long way from Combat. If they had made a Star Wars version of this where you are flying the Millenium Falcon, it would have sold like hot cakes!
    Thanks for this video! It really helps to have at least a brief look at each of these games before trying to buy them.

      I'm a big Game Gear player, and I grew up with the NES. The 7800s graphics look fantastic for their time. Who's brilliant idea was it to use the 2600's sounds?

    I agree with most of your listing of the Atari 7800 games. Except, I would list Real Sports Baseball, as the most worst game for the Atari 7800. It is really bad. I remember buying this game, when Child World was marking 7800 games down, I got it for$ 5.00. I tried to take it back, it was that bad. I could not get a refund for it! Also, Tank Command, I had that game once, i could not get it to work on my Atari 7800 system! That is the one cartridge I lack of having a complete Atari 7800 cartridge collection. Hope to find it someday again! Good video!

    the main weakness of the 7800 was that it used the same sound hardware as the 2600. The games looked and played well, but sound was a bit meh on many games. Galaga, Food Fight and many others sounded good though! Supposedly cartridges could improve the sound by using a POKEY chip, but this workaround wasn't widely used.

      They used the same chip as the 2600 for backwards compatibility. The TIA was for both video and audio on the 2600. Basically they just didn't have an audio chip for 7800 games so the only way for sound was the TIA. Or POKEY In carts, but that was expensive.

      POKEY would have been worth it, as the games sound like crap otherwise. Part of the reason Ballblazer is considered the top game for the system is that it uses the POKEY sound chip. Plus it shows off the 3D capabilities of the system.

    Some games you can see they really tried and did well. Others are meh....the 2600 sound chip though Oyyy....just weird with the better graphics. I call it Fartari some times.lol

      Yeah, the Pokie chip should have come standard hardware with the system. It also had its issues in other areas that made developing games for the system difficult.
