yep, also the series is packed with hidden things that all work toghter as gears in a clockwork. even things they never talk about. For example all claudias in all 3 times have heterochromia (one blue and one brown eye) and there is a gen mutation called the waardenburg syndrome. Persons who have waardenburg syndrom can have either heterochromia, deafness or a white hair forlock. Now here is the deal... Young Elisabeth is deaf. And Jana (the wife of Tronte) has a white hair forlock. That might be because all have the same gen mutation. And ALL i mean ALL in the show are maybe connected (maybe even as one family). Those are the real hidden crazy things in this show.... and there is a lot more.... This show is like a escape room. You have that what you see and a second hidden level with symbolism and stuff. For me its a masterpiece if you are willing to understand and decode "dark". Its more of a strager things for grownups.

They both have teenagers (different ends of the teenager spectrum), the 80's are involved in both (to completely different degrees), and both have sci-fi elements (again completely different elements). Comparing the two seems a stretch to me.

So, it is thrilling for them.
If you live in a war zone or a high crime area this sort of movies is the least thing you would like to see, but in German television or Swedish novels everything is about people being murdered. Just because in their real world, this does not happen so often.

It’s about the hospital Charité in Berlin and the first series plays out in the 1890s(?), the second season plays out in Nazi Germany.
The second season in my opinion is 1000 times better than the first.
It’s great for anyone who wants loves historicity accurate TV shows. The costumes are accurate and the hair is accurate enough. @@theclau If you really don't like this stuff at all, I highly recommend watching 'Türkisch für Anfänger', it has like 3 seasons and a movie I think. I personally also don't like crime shows, but there is a really funny one called 'Mord mit Aussicht'. Aside from that, the 3 'Fack ju Göhte' movies are really funny, but I guess it's a little hard to follow with a lot of puns and 'German inside jokes'. If you like war and doctors, you should look at 'Charité'. I believe almost all of what I've listed is on Netflix.

@@theclau It might just be me but I feel like historic dramas and the like is the only genre that regularly produces good material out of Germany. Most of our comedians are more cringeworthy than the American ones and anything else on TV is just horrible reality TV and the big name shows we get are just dubbed imports. That being said, I haven't owned an actual TV for 10 years, for that very reason.
And yeah, I guess there are also good documentaries on the documentary channels but TH-cam provides much better infotainment, anyways. I did really like "Die Deutschen" though. But again, that's history.

I don't think that any subtitles are available but even for native speakers this "show" is almost an information overflow as you are confronted with fast monologues, pictures that match some of the mentioned words (sometimes in a ridiculous way), text that adds further information on either the spoken word or on the picture in the back and then some needed pauses filled with some kind of philosophic meaning.

Definitely a possibility but to me, German dubs almost always feel so forced. Everyone has to speak extremely clearly. People are not really doing voices or using dialects. You're forced to basically just read stuff clearly. It feels fake to me. That's why I definitively switched to watching English originals, 15 years ago. Once you've done that, you realise that in German dubs, all voices are interchangable and everyone just sounds the same.

If you never saw them I would recommend 'Kriegerin' (2012; th-cam.com/video/ZBHQQ5BVK-4/w-d-xo.html) a drama which is about a Neonazi woman which decides to help a refugee after almost killing another.
Another GREAT movie is 'Das finstere Tal' (2014; th-cam.com/video/wZqYbJM3JJc/w-d-xo.html) which I think is an Austrian movie (with quite a bit of a dialect, but with subs very manageable) about an isolated Austrian village in the late 1800s which is rather tightly controlled by a patriarchal family. Suddenly an American photographer appears and seems to stir the slumber. Great version of an "European western".
I would also recommend giving 'Gegen die Wand' (2004; th-cam.com/video/gGd6RaoYPxo/w-d-xo.html) and the comedy 'Almanya - Willkommen in Deutschland' (2011; th-cam.com/video/1symyME8TdE/w-d-xo.html) a chance. The first is really the breakthrough of Fatih Akin and the second manages to portrait the same German-Turkish milieu but rather differently - and of course wittier.
And of course, there are the two films I always answer: 1. Friendship (2009, th-cam.com/video/p1WrRmJ_p2Q/w-d-xo.html) which is a lovely little road movie about two Eastgerman friends shortly after the Fall of the Berlin Wall, traveling through the USA to find the father of one of them, which fled the GDR years ago. Matthias Schweighöfer gets a lot of bad rap for his mediocre rom-coms these days, that movie was one of his last gems in my view. 2. Das Parfum - Die Geschichte eines Mörders (2006; th-cam.com/video/d62GcKN08Hs/w-d-xo.html) Now, admitelty, its only German production so the original language is English and people might find i odd to hear Alan Rickman and Dustin Hoffman speaking German, but I recommend it anyway. :P

    I have a beginner question.

    • @TomCopeland
      @TomCopeland  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Ultimately, I think the most important thing is that you're having fun and enjoying the process.
German subtitles are really great and I totally recommend trying it, but I certainly *wouldn't* recommend using *any* learning technique that leaves you feeling frustrated or annoyed.
Here's an idea: try reading some simple books in German first (perhaps on a kindle so you can press-to-translate) and then come back to films once your vocabulary has expanded by using the books.
Roald Dahl in translation is a good place to start at ~A2 level!

A lot of native English-speakers find "Dark" hard to follow in English. "Babylon Berlin" is a little easier. "The Same Sky" (Der Gleiche Himmel) is easier still. (All on Netflix.) There are movies (and probably series) available on TH-cam aimed at A1 or A2 or B1 German-speakers. For example, "Nicos Weg" is available on TH-cam, apparently in an A1 and an A2 version. These can be watched with German subtitles. NOTE: Beginner = A1 < A2 < B1 < B2 < C1 < C2 = almost bilingual.

      Thank you very much !
Seems most people still do not understand that what we learn about history is pure propaganda.
      In addition :
Simple people don't fight each other in wars. They get forced by their governments which cooperate with powerful companies and financial institutions.

Well, there were people in high positions who obviously weren't victims, come on. Fascists aren't victims, wether they're German, Italian or Russian!!

You forgot the whole rest of white collar criminals from the UK, the US and some other nice participants of the war.
Their goal was never to liberate peoples from communism or from fascism. But to keep their rivals down.

No, there certainly were many people who I'd never claim were victims. My great-grandfather was sent to a KZ after saying "Hitler should be burried so deep you'd never find him again" in a pub. He was snitched on by another guy from the pub. Was this snitch a victim? I wouldn't say so. Luckily he survived and got out relatively fast due to him owning some kind of construction company which was then forced to build SS barracks in the north of Hamburg (which are a hospital nowadays, a shitty hospital, but a hospital at least :p ).
The main victims in Germany were those who grew up short before and during the war. The son of my great-grandfather was forced into the Wehrmacht once he became 17, somewhere towards the end of '44 I believe. He then got into soviet war prisonership for several years. Those young people, who came from decent families that were not totally loyal, had a very low chance to not participate in the war directly.
Anybody from the SS, higher rank Wehrmacht officers and many of those in positions of some kind of responsibility weren't victims for the most part, even though there might be a few exceptions.

Laurenz Peter we're talking about the people, the citizens not the politicians or the dictators. We're talking about crowd control. And the fear of thinking differentely that was everywhere at that time. People were shoot to dead or ended up in the guilotine just for say what they thought. And last, but not less important, different time with a different social construction.

4 Blocks' characters and actors are all of near-east descendant, so their German is mostly that of foreigners as well, and maybe easy to get but not always perfect.

As I German I can tell u : Don't watch German TV shows... Most of them are painfull to watch... Pick yourself a fancy TV show u like (Perhaps Game of Thrones, Rick and morty or whatever u like) and use German Audio with an English subtitle... It helps a lot if u brain Know what is going on until u can connect German words with they English counterparts....
