Moanin' -- jazz piano

- I listened to a CD by Eldar Djangirov recently which had this tune on it. I really liked how he approached it. He would go big, then go small, then go big again. He plays it with a happy Oscar Peterson vibe. I thought it would be fun to copy his approach. I didn't copy his notes, but I tried to get the same feel and same musical arcs. This was a lot of fun to do. It was a bit of a stretch because it is different than my usual style. It also gave me the opportunity to explore GarageBand a little bit more. The backing tracks were done before I recorded the piano track. I used GarageBand and Synthogy Ivory Steinway piano patch. The keyboard is a Yamaha CP300.
I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed doing this. - เพลง

KIDS ON THE SLOPE FEELS
sam santos kids on the motherfucking slope
Thank you!!! IKRRR
Still trying to learn it but just cant
It's funny, I played this in a jazz band and then I watched kids in the slope and recognized the song. Probably in my top 5 piano songs.

Snappy, swinging, superb technique, and great acoustic piano sound. It's so much fun to watch a good pianist close-up. Thanks for posting this great music.
Love the phrasing, finesse, syncopation and dynamics. You definitely captured it all! Also so many different ideas here.
The rolling down of the keys at 3:34 is so slick and smooth! Great playing.
That's a very well thought out arrangement. Great Job! I have been playing and listening to solo jazz piano most of my life, and have to say many of your videos give me more listening pleasure than some of the well known jazz piano greats..... You have tasty licks, great voicing, well timed silence... swing.... dynamic expression, a balanced sprinkling of speed/technique ..... Kudos! Keep up the great work! -James
Thanks James, much appreciated!
This is how jazz should be. It brings back lots of memories when I first played this piece during the first few years of my education in jazz.
I think this has gotta be my favorite rendition of Moanin
This dude is one of my favorite ❤ on TH-cam i wish he start teaching again
I'll try to get to it next time I do a tutorial. I'm glad you liked it.
Cant help but to just completely geek out at this!
God bless you, America, for jazz and nothing else... My master- and slave- ancestors find a peculiar redemption in this interpretation of this timeless piece of grief and katharsis synthesis. Is this a glimpse of the essence of the Music itself? By God, truly it is.
This is so good that it could make a pianist want to work and practice like a crazy--or never play again! Seriously, this is some amazing playing!
Thanks for the recording reference, LoSignorino
Your embellishment on the head was sublime
TASTY!!!!!!!!! The most wonderful, reserved, emotional and tactful covers I've ever heard, man you're got that touch to tickle them ivories
I like to listen to this in the morning with my first coffee, totally makes my day.
Thanks, benweston2002. KJ, HH, CC I have listened to a lot. Tristano, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson are the foundation for me.
Absolutely will NEVER get bored listening to this amazing jazz playing! Every time I see it, I keep finding new things that blow me away.
That is one of the nicest compliments I have ever received. Thank you so much!
Professionally transcribed...wow! I would love to see that (since I don't transcribe)
Wow, what can I say? I was really sitting back there clicking my fingers and tapping my foot. This took me to an exclusive club/restaurant with the piano playing in the background. I hope you see that as a good thing... I do.
I want to get into playing the piano again, i played it in school but they didn't teach properly so i found myself trying to learn things i wanted to. So anyway i've never really got back into it, if i could have 1% of yours talent i'd be happy Well done!

Scotland,
Even i don't know dat much about piano i love this
This is wonderful. You're an inspiration, sir. Two important things I got from this video. 1) It makes me want to go to the piano and practice, practice, practice. 2) I want to send you a donation to buy some shoes. (joke) Thanks for this great vid.
This makes me want to take lessons again. How I miss my piano!
Almost my entire life! :-) Thanks.
Thanks everyone. I had fun doing this one.
Since i discovered this fellow on youtube never stop watching
The tune is in F minor with AABA structure. The basic chord changes are I VI II V I for the A section. IV III II V I for the B section.
For two hand improvising, I use the LH supportively by picking one voicing for each chord and I play it in sync with the RH. In the RH I play a melody in octaves with 1st and 5th fingers. I just fill in on the fly with fingers 2,3 and 4. I try to fill in with color notes close to the chord I am playing in the LH.
Simply stunning! Strong Henry Mancini vibes... :)
I love the way you play this, the phrasing is very dynamic... Like you said, you take it from small to big and back again, but with a smoothness that escapes most pianists.
Just amazing. I can't stop being impressed
You are so talented!
This Is Great!! YOU ARE EXCELLENT 5 STARS
I'm still coming back to this video, year after year. Always puts me in a good mood. Cheers, 7notemode!

There is always someone who plays better. If you enjoy playing at whatever level you find yourself and enjoy the process of learning new things, then you will always enjoy the music that you make. :-)

I'm 21 and I find this style of jazz simply amazing. More than anything it is youthful, fast, like you play with the notes.
Makes me want to start learning a little jazz! Thanks for sharing.
Love your mellow sound. All on the same page musically. Love it when it all comes together like this.
