1940s - 1960s Classic Car Junkyard walkthrough Tour | Can We SAVE Any Of Them??? (Will It Run)

  • Hey everyone and welcome back to Iowa Classic Cars! Junkyards like this are a rare sight in this day & age, and with so many cars from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, its a true treasure trove of old vehicles for parts and to put back on the road for restoration. In this video, we tour an old junkyard that a friend of mine owns, and in the process we look for some cars that we could get running again and put back onto the road. While many of these old classics have sat for 40+ years, they all have good bones and the biggest question is still to be asked about them all, will any of them run again?
    Thanks for watching!

I love both of the Oldsmobiles that are on the thumbnail. They remind me of what my dad was driving in the 1960's. He had a green two door 1957 Oldsmobile, and a blue and white 1958 Oldsmobile Fiesta station wagon that had factory air conditioning, a rare option back then.

The heavy International with the straight six that turns would be a good and unique hauler project. And if whoever would do this for this truck wants it to have really unique truck, keep the original engine. However if you are going to upgrade, A Ford or MOPAR engine would be a correct Resto-mod. Ford Super Duty trucks started with International engines. And The Dodge Brothers supplied MOtor PARts to Ford from 1902 to 1913.

The Olds 98 Regency at about 5:50 is a 1974 model based on the exposed grill louvers all the way to the top, the wheel covers, and the color scheme. They had the 455 4-bbl. and, after the first OPEC oil shutoff in late 1973, could be had at pretty good prices due to their low fuel mileage. The ride qualities were like a magic carpet.

A lot of really cool stuff there. The engine in the 54 Chevy at the beginning is a 235, not a 216. The 216 was discontinued in 1953. The Studebaker pickup is a 1949 thru 1953 body style. The 300 on the GMC I'm pretty sure means that it's a 1&1/2 ton, and the engine is most likely a 248. Thanks for braving the cold to show us these gems.

Wayne Indiana that we all hangout called Halls restaurant, anyway I power braked it sitting with a bunch of nice rods and smoked the tire so bad you couldn't see anything. I stopped and shut it off and the cops pulled in, lol they checked every car there but mine. The good old days. Stay safe people 🙂

For YEARS I loved old cars...but every time I tried to buy one the price for the junk they were selling was insanely "TOO DAMN HIGH"!! It seems too many idiots think an old car is constantly a "rare car" when in most cases the car in question wasn't! For example one guy I met owned a 1966 Mustang with an inline six cylinder engine, and some how he thought this car (which was sitting in an open field for 20 years) was some how worth $22,000!!
Another guy I met owned a 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 (sort of like a low budget Delta) and he honestly thought it was work $5000, and the car hadn't run in literally 30 years, had no brakes, battery or even tires on it, and couldn't accept the fact that it was NOT actually a "rare car"!!
Too often many of the cars I have looked at, needed WAY MORE WORK AND PARTS THEN THE CAR IS ACTUALLY WORTH!!
We all know old cars don't hold any value, and the only way that they are "worth anything" is when somebody else wants what we have!! But that said I have even met guys who think "I saw the same car on Barrett Jackson Auction" also think that they pile of rotting metal is worth the same amount even though it hasn't run in forty years!!
Basically my point is I have lost a lot of interest in old cars, simply because too many morons think because "it is an old car it is obviously worth my extreme price"! And too many idiots try to sell scrap metal as a car, when it is barely worth the cost it would be to haul it to the salvage yard! Which brings me to my last example here.......last year in 2021 in March, a guy on the Binghamton NY Craig's List, posted an ad for a 1965 Mustang Convertible and posted photos of this car! THE ONLY PARTS on the car worth anything was the grille emblem, the gas cap, and the MUSTANG letters that the car STILL have, and the tail lights! His asking price was originally $8000!! The top was completely rotted off the car and it had been sitting in the same place for nearly 38 years, "parked"! The rims were even missing off the car and it was very literally sitting on the ground! For months the Craig's List ad was posted......then one day the same car in August was relisted this time as "FREE"!! My point here is, he could have sold the car when it was "still a car" but instead sat on it so long there was literally nothing left of it to actually sell!!! And NOBODY in their right mind was ever going to give him $8000 for a VIN number and a gas cap!!

Someone really loved radiators and carburators out of those cars.
You can narrow that 17:30 Chevy down to 1949-1950, the '51s lost the dot turn signals in favor of arrow shaped ones in lower corners of grille. Further differences would be represented by number of bars in the grille, but it's missing. Nice '55 DeSoto in 19:44 - first year of Forward Look Styling and a Hemi in there. Orphan brand , might attract someone. Also the condition of glass in those cars shows why in '59 GM advertised the safety plate glass is ALL around the car now, previous model years had normal glass. 24:16 - optional windshield washer in there I believe

About halfway through the video before the 24 minute Mark there's a black car that you liked the back of it was chopped off probably a donor for another vehicle. I think you said the engine was gone or half disassembled. Hey that would be a perfect candidate to sliding pickup bed into. Maybe you can judge with the interest would be such a build. All the way up there 50s it was a common practice to take make a truck out of a car. More common as you go back into the 30s and twenties. Of course during the Great depression and world war II people did whatever they had to in order to get by I need some of the pictures are very interesting and I've never seen anybody focus on it but it does show up embarrassed pictures of people just living their lives during these times hear it of course the Volkswagen bug is made into a flat bed truck. Just an idea FYI
