Sulforaphane starts decreasing after the sprouts start turning into microgreens, which happens around day five. That is why you should control the growth until day five by keeping the sprouts in the dark or low indirect light.
I don’t think TH-camrs who make all those videos about keeping the jars in the dark know this info. Otherwise they would say that in those videos. Thank you for this very important clarification 🙏
I have been waiting for this video for years to clear my question and for this information of yours as well. Many thanks to both of you Tikki and Dary.
❤ Thanks for bringing this fact to light! 💡 The is true of all plants, once the cotyledons form, they start sapping the sprout of its nutrients to grow and green up. Some lab tests I’ve seen say maximum SF is at about day 2-3, but way too early to harvest, if you ask me. I grow mine in the dark and then freeze, to increase the SF, in 100g packets for my daily smoothie.
I very much appreciate your scientific method. You cleared up my question after watching about 20 TH-cam Sites. Your verbal explanations are extremely clear and concise. No Nonsense--No Bull. Very informative. Thanks
But there was no info on the possible nutritional differences of the sprouts 🌱 from each method so I don’t understand the value of the demonstration…🤷🏻♀️
Thank you. I was confused by the unlimited videos saying to grow them in the dark. The first time I grew sprouts I was a complete novice. I grew them in the light and they turned out excellent, therefore confusing me after I saw allllllllll the videos instructing growers to place them in the dark. Your comparison confirmed my beliefs. You helped me see the LIGHT : )
I saw most say dark but I wanted to try it the simple way. I just left them on my kitchen counter near the window by the sink. So easy and in 6 days little bright green leaves and long white roots. Almost all seed sprouted. Easy!
Me too done them before in light an dno problem; but haven't done for years and this time everyone saying to grow in the dark..This was a great vid, thank you lady! Just set my seeds to start off.
Depends on seed variety. Some seeds germinate worse with light, some doesn't care, some germinate and grow faster under light especially the smaller seed types. As for why many people recommend darkness...it's just a subjective belief that everyone simply believes in and copies and pass around as the objective truth, even though none of them actually tested it themselves. Human nature lol. Most social herd animals exhibit the same copying behavior.
I’m so tired of that! “Here’s the RIGHT WAY to do this thing that I’ve only done this one way one time...” Between broccoli sprouts and germinating an avocado seed, entire wars could be fought LOL Do it the way that’s convenient and provides adequate results.
I use jars that are probably twice the size of your jars, but I only use 1 tablespoon of seeds per jar. The sprouts have more room to grow and will then grow better. I also rinse them around every 4 hours and they are ready to turn green on the third day and soon are ready to eat.
Absolutely. In this age of arguments and conspiracy theories it's a serious skill to say "I actually do not know" or "I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment"
Honestly that was amazing... I, too, was binge watching sprout videos on TH-cam trying to figure out which guru had better results. Your experiment just saved me an experiment of my own and a ton of time! Awesome format. This was fun.
This is an excellent experiment video. I'm thinking that the stronger taste of the more developed sprouts/microgreens may come from an increased amount of myrosinase enzyme, that with glucoraphanin, produces the sulforaphane. This is suggestive of a more nutritious product, which would also be attained from just allowing more growing time. Another enhancement trick, for producing increased sulforophane, is to freeze instead of refrigerate the sprouts. The freezing process produces molecular crystalization, which lices the cellular walls, which places the myrosinase and glucoraphanin reactants together, to more readily form the sulforaphane. This mimicks mastication (chopping, chewing), which acts to break down cellular walls, putting these reactants together. This works much the same way as snapping and mixing a chem-light, where the reaction of two chemicals produces a luminescent compound. Since heat deactivates myrosinase, all cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, brussel sprouts, etc.) should either be eaten raw, or chopped fine and let sit for 45-90 minutes before cooking, to allow the sulforophane reaction to occur, or add a myrosinase source after cooking, like mustard, mustard powder, or horseradish, and then chew well.
thanks a lot again for this valuable info.... what happens to the nutrional value of sprout (or vegetable greens) when steamed till tender before eating them?
LIke other posters said, you are an excellent instructor. But more than that, you have disproved a very huge assumption and made anyone who follows your research a lot more productive.
Good job setting up the test, but..... I wondered if temperature played a part. Under the grow light the temperature might have been higher, causing an earlier sprouting. As someone who sprouts seeds for transplanting to a garden, I know that temperature is important. So, I'm just adding a variable that wasn't controlled for. Still, the darkness might not be an important factor.
Excellent video very thorough one thing I would add rather than leave your stuff out on the counter for two hours to dry for the final process before you put them in the fridge or eat them especially on a regular paper towel which is loaded with chemicals unless it’s a unbleached paper towel why not simply just get a good salad spinner that’s what I’ve done before and it works excellent you don’t have to leave them out just trying to be helpful once again the very good video I’m beginning to wonder if you could’ve actually grown and indirect light as long as it wasn’t too hot

I was literally thinking that keeping it dark was probably unnecessary and was hoping for it to be that way because I want my sprouts on the countertop where I can remember to rinse twice daily. Thank you for this video. I was all ready to start with keeping them in the dark and now I don’t think I will!! This is my first time sprouting; they are soaking as I type this!
Amazing comparison video! I have been looking for someone who’s experimented with this exact idea. I think I’ll leave my sprouts in indirect light for first few days then move to direct light the last day. Bravo. Thank you for this!
Thanks for laboratory type experiment. I will go by nature’s leap-1. Soak the seeds in overnight. 2. Keep wet seeds in dark till germination complete and skin is detached. 3. Put in light and wait of tiny leaf to appears and then eat or store in refrigerator after washing.
I'm glad I came across this video first. It was very well done. Would you happen to have any information on storing the sprouts after the hulls have been removed? I would like to make sure I get the most sulforaphane out of them and I don't want to blanch them or store them incorrectly. Thanks.
As I understand it, the best way is to freeze them because the freezing process will release more nutrients. Also, prepare them from the frozen state directly (as when they thaw the nutrients will be leaking out with the water, plus they are less inviting to eat).
Thank you for a great video. A lot of work and time went into this and it’s greatly appreciated. I’m only starting out and haven’t had much luck mainly due to the fact that I live in a country area that has no town water and the weather and temp changes affects my ability to grow what I want so I’ve been watching a lot of videos to try and help me sprout seeds for my veggie garden. I think I’ll stick with sprouts for nutrition as I had no idea the benefits of eating sprouts compared to the fully grown version! 💕
Microgreens too! They are easy to grow and pack a lot of nutrition. They do take a lot of seeds, so it really depends on your resources. You can grow your own seeds if you let some of the plants grow to maturity and go to seed. Good luck with your growing especially with limited water supply! Thanks for the comment.
Hey fellow Mason jar sprouter, thanks for your excellent experiment video. I sprout both lentils and broccoli seeds weekly and plan to for the rest of my life. I had been doing them in separate jars, then one day I had the brilliant idea of combining them! Doh! I don't bother separating the hulls, entire operation occurs on counter, rinse 2x/day, switch lids from screen to plastic lid prior to fridge. It's gotta be easy if you plan on always doing it. How about don't be so stingy with your soak water! lol! I mostly use mine in soft tacos, combined with homemade hot sauce, corn tortillas, melted sharp cheddar, avocado, purple onion, sometimes tomatoes, raw broccoli florets, sometimes sautéed jalapenos and opinions, sometimes diced garlic, sometimes canned yellowfin tuna or what ever else is lying around. Sprout on! 100-400% increased nutrients!!
Did this with black sesame seeds. I didn't want to waste the black water because it's full of nutrients, so I drank it. It tasted fine or I could have mixed it with juice. It may be placebo effect but I felt good after drinking it.

Thanks Tikki! I love your videos and curiosity! I grow sprouts outside in a rectangular, plastic container, with lid, I drilled a bunch of holes in. I'm a weirdo. I prefer sprouts grown in a neat, orderly fashion rather than jumbled up in a jar. LOL!
Never though of it like that "jumbled up in a jar", they never complain although they do get crowded in there towards the end. Thanks for your feedback Marty!
A very good and informative video. I must give it a try quite soon. Thank you. A new, healthier lifestyle sounds promising. Regards from northern Europe.

I have been sprouting seeds for over 25 years. Never kept them in the dark. I was always under the impression that no metal should be in contact with the seeds. I only used cheesecloth held by a sterilized rubber band. Never had a problem. Now I use plastic straining lids, and store them on my counter.
@@chayah_luv I grow my sprouts in jars and I just surround the jars with stones and pop a couple inside with them. In terms of microgreens, I just place rocks at the corners and in the middle. Watering with structured Shungite water is a must too! :)
@@chayah_luv Difficult to answer that on here! If you send me an email address i could send you the deets... Otherwise; To make Shungite water you just place Shungite stones in water... Structuring water is a little more difficult but can be done in a variety of ways. The easiest option would be using a Vortex Magnetizer Valve (google it) Using magnets and a valve. I recommend the book: "Dancing With Water" as it has a detailed guide :)
I've tried all types of sprouts. Broccoli sprouts are the most vile tasting of all of them for some reason. I think it's the sulfur compounds. Red clovers definitely the tastiest. Sunflower sprouts are also excellent
Love the video! I was also a bit confused about the lighting, your experiment solved that issue. I also want to share my own discovery, I learned that it's a good idea to rinse the seeds the first time with citric acid to avoid bad smells later, my first trials the sprouts got stinky and i had to throw away some batches.
The instructions that came with the broccoli seeds I bought said to soak for 10 minutes the broccoli seeds with one cup of water and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to sterilize them then rinse.
When you rinse the jars twice a day save the water and water your plants with it .great video you are excellent teacher. Best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪
Good idea. The thing I don’t like about sprouting, is the huge water usage
Now that is smart thinking 👍
I use it to flush the toilet, just like the water I save while taking a shower
I've heard this several times and I still forgot to use it on my plants! Ugg. Please keep sharing this tidbit of wisdom!

@@TikkiOOO Guess I've never said I'm a chef. LOL! Presentation! Presentation! :)
Interesting experiment! I am just starting with sprout growing here in the Philippines so appreciate your info.
Thank you for that experiment. I always wondered about that darkness part
A very good and informative video. I must give it a try quite soon. Thank you. A new, healthier lifestyle sounds promising. Regards from northern Europe.
Thank you for answering some of my questions, and I love your sense of humour!
Very interesting! Thank you so much for sharing.
Good job well done, thank you for your time.
Beautiful! 💖 Thanks so much from a newbee sprouter - so glad to find your excellent video before starting. Love all the helpful comments too. Bless you. 🤗
That was an awesome experiment and answered some lingering questions that I had. Thanks!
I acknowledge your scientific approach to day to day concerns. Thank you for this work that has benefitted me/us. I am sorry you got tired doing the work, but I am very glad you persisted to the conclusion. "No One is Outside the Circle of LOVE." -S. F.-G. 2017 CLF UUA
Great point. Thank you. Excellent I always wondered about the light. Actually the one styayed under ambiant light look a bit greener... great !!
Nice job! Thanks for the info!!
I have been sprouting seeds for over 25 years. Never kept them in the dark. I was always under the impression that no metal should be in contact with the seeds. I only used cheesecloth held by a sterilized rubber band. Never had a problem. Now I use plastic straining lids, and store them on my counter.
Thank you for the time you took I order to give us this knowledge!!
great video. I can keep my sprouts on the counter and not waste money on a grow light. I like the greener color of the counter ones.
I highly recommend growing sprouts around the mineral shungite. I find them much fresher and they last longer.
How you use it with sprouts and micro greens?
@@chayah_luv I grow my sprouts in jars and I just surround the jars with stones and pop a couple inside with them.
In terms of microgreens, I just place rocks at the corners and in the middle. Watering with structured Shungite water is a must too! :)
@@theboraxbandit9563 how do you do structured shungite water?
@@chayah_luv Difficult to answer that on here! If you send me an email address i could send you the deets... Otherwise; To make Shungite water you just place Shungite stones in water... Structuring water is a little more difficult but can be done in a variety of ways. The easiest option would be using a Vortex Magnetizer Valve (google it) Using magnets and a valve. I recommend the book: "Dancing With Water" as it has a detailed guide :)
@@theboraxbandit9563 hello. Can i also have these your secret interesting trick please
🎉
The instructions that came with the broccoli seeds I bought said to soak for 10 minutes the broccoli seeds with one cup of water and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to sterilize them then rinse.
Very nice video. Thanks for the information!!
Thank you that was great. Options! I was only doing the in the dark version, not anymore.
I love your thorough experiments and videos!! Thank you for all the work so we have so much information.
MOST EXCELLENT VIDEO, THANK YOU, I WONDERED ABOUT THAT!
Thank you! Just now learning about sprouting…this really helped me!
Extremely useful and informative - Thank you for this information.
Thankyou Tikki, you are the best!!
