      I am learning everything about upshifting and downshifting. I started driving on the street recently. I am a student with FedEx freight. I feel my upshifting is good as the truck gains speed. When I start with low gears at the lights or stop signs I grind all kinds. I have subscribed to your channel. Thanks for sharing and the tips.

    I struggled with the concept of clutching vs brake-clutching. Instructor never explained what the clutch-brake was (he never even called it a clutch-brake, I only learned that here, thanks). All he said was 'don't push the clutch in too far.' Then when I did that at the traffic lights he said 'clutch all the way in.' So I was left not understanding how the clutch mechanism worked. Very frustrating to learn here that my instructor never even mentioned it, just got annoyed with me when I was 'doing it wrong.' Thanks for the vids.

    Once you get 8-12 months under your belt this procedure will become smoother n more natural I am speaking of my own experience I had a super instructor He said relax and listen to me he said you will do this correctly because I can trane any one remember practice practice no one learns at the same pace as your buddy study that shift pattern until you can visualize it in your mind these trucks are not synchronized like a modern car that is what the double clutch method is about remember the accelerator Or foot feed and clutch do not go together or you will grind gears which is dangerous and can break teeth or cogs off the gears timing your shift movements is critical never take eyes away from road n mirrors the stick and pedals are not leaving the cab you shift by sound n feel that is how I was taught he put tape over the tachometer and said listen to the engine and feel what the vehicle is communicating to you threw the wheel floor n stick when I drove for consolidated freight ways they did not equip their trucks with tachometers or power steering Always start out in the lowest possible gear until you get comfortable and when you do hang up your gloves and quit then surrender your license back to the state because you are dangerous seriously you never want to get comfortable with one of these 40 ton death traps it will know and say to itself now I’m going to kill him or her you don’t play with me buddy

    Once you master the shifting up and down the down shift is more important than the up shift my instructor use to say he wish he had a way to put us behind the wheel at highway speed in top gear and then start the training But once you learn you can operate without the clutch in level terrain not hill country or mountains bobtailing or empty trailer I take off in 3rd go to 4th pull-up the range valve go to 6th 8th then 10th and the same on the down shift practice practice practice the 10 speed is excellent it can be your best friend don’t be afraid to apply yourself with other gear boxes as well hone all of your skills with pride backing and turning a good way I discovered to learn skip shifting is on a old Mack R model with a 5 speed maxi torque if you can find someone to illustrate that concept you really got to drop those RPMs to shift it is slower starting out takes more planning on driving style good for the city you do not down shift these more then one gear 5th to 4th a completely different driving style to much down shifting on these can mess up the up shifting but a very rugged triple counter shaft gear box worth learning and can help with skipping gears on a multi speed progressive shift transmission think positive on all your training crave it embrace it respect it and your self smile in the mirror everyday prettrip your self every day as well as your equipment take care of your physical and mental health you run the truck do not let this job run you

    At the end of the video you asked him why he is giving it gas , since I am just starting truck school I know why he was doing it , when you downshift you rev up a little into the next lower gear , since he knew he had to rev up to downshift he was doing that , the problem was he was still in the higher gear

    • @ACETruckKing
      @ACETruckKing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@ACETruckKing That's exactly the problem, people with very little experience who are only teaching them enough to pass the test. Once they pass the test and get their CDL, they think that makes them a driver. They don't ever try to improve themselves after that. I've been a company trainer at several places. I've had new hires who've been driving 5 years and still look like your student. They would get offended and argue when I would try to correct things like shifting on railroad tracks or coasting up to a light in neutral. They were taught to pass the test, not to drive the truck. The roads are full of this sort of dangerous ignorance. It's one of the biggest reasons I quit driving after almost 20 years to become a fulltime CDL instructor. I teach them to DRIVE THE TRUCK, not just pass the test. Seriously, give this some thought.

      Therevdon If you’re a trainer then you must realize that it takes a lot of practice and repetition to learn to control a truck. We not only teach to just pass the test, we show safety for students and safety for others on the road. My only problem with your comment is that you judge on one video of a struggling student’s first few times on the road, of course he’s not road ready on this video and with my help he became a better driver. Watch this other more advance student th-cam.com/video/n1vw63dEqYQ/w-d-xo.html who of course needs more practice which he will get by driving more. As a truck driver you never stop learning.

      I am just finishing my CDL classes, my state road test is this Friday. My instructors specifically tell us "we have to train you to past the test this way". Then we get a lot of...." off the record, in real life you will probably do this, this and this". They also preach safety as number one priority.
      I saw a thing or two the driver should not do, but as stated, it's his first time....I was scared to death my first time on the road, I was flat out mentally drained by the end of the day with so much info going on. Now, after 10-12 hrs on the road, I can concentrate on my weak points.....I tend to run the rpms to high and then deep clutch, habits of driving a high revving 4 wheel for yrs, but I'm getting better.
