Jay once told us a story in concert about how he and his buddies went down to a bar in the South. It was in a town where they had traveled to do a concert, and were basically about to get their butts kicked by the locals in the bar who didn't like them. However, when Jay was asked why he was in town, he said he was there to do a show, and explained that he was JAY of Jay & the Americans. Apparently, one of their records was actually in the bar's Jukebox and was one of the favorites there in the bar! They played the record and Jay sang along, proving that he really was JAY and it saved their butts. They also got free drinks!

I absolutely love this song! It’s so catchy and so true! Makes me wish I grew up back then, especially in America! 😉 most underrated band ever, and one of the greatest bands to ever exist, Jay and the Americans!

I think this is his best song, showcased his voice well. It was a song from West Side Story, a smash hit. Unfortunately another reminder of how far we have fallen here.

Imagine writing lyrics like this when Dylan was singing Sad Eye Lady of The Lowlands to the same young generation of 1966.

First of all this was written in 63 for The Drifters and I'll take Lieber Stoller Mann and Weil writing TALENT over mr. Zimmerman any ole day.

      Lyrics
      Only in America
      Can a guy from anywhere
Go to sleep a pauper and wake up a millionaire
      Only in America
Can a kid without a cent
Get a break and maybe grow up to be President
      Only in America
      Land of opportunity, yeah
Would a classy girl like you fall for a poor boy like me
      Only in America
Can a kid who's washin' cars
Take a giant step and reach right up and touch the stars
      Only in America
Could a dream like this come true
Could a guy like me start with nothing and end up with you
      Only in America
      Land of opportunity, yeah
Would a classy girl like you fall for a poor boy like me
Only in America (poor boy like me)
Only in America (only in America)
Only in America (only in America)
Only in America (only in America)
Only in America (only in America)
In 1963 you had 16,000 US soldiers in Viet Nam. You had the assassination of the President. And we have Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil writing this riveting
social conscious song: Only in America. Laughable.

@@integralsun you left out jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller as co-writers along with mann and Weil who even Dylan had much respect for.
