  • From 1942-1945, Electro Motive Division’s F-unit was the only road freight diesel built in America. While the War Production Board limited competitors Alco and Baldwin to diesel switcher and steam locomotive production during World War II, EMD’s 1,350 hp FT became a runaway best-seller. By war’s end, Electro Motive had a lead over its competitors that would last until they closed their doors.
With production restrictions lifted and the U.S. economy humming with pent-up demand, railroads clamored for new diesels to replace a steam fleet exhausted by wartime traffic. In July 1946, EMD introduced a new model F-unit, the F3. Horsepower was upgraded to 1,500 and lessons learned on the FT gave the F3 better reliability and lower maintenance. Under the hood throbbed an improved 567-series V-12 engine. With 567 inches of displacement per cylinder, this same engine would power virtually the entire first generation of EMD diesel locomotives.
The F3 hit the market in an era when almost every boy in America wanted toy trains for Christmas, and F3 models quickly became a hot topic in letters to Santa. Such was the desire of railroads for publicity that Lionel® convinced the Santa Fe, the New York Central, and EMD to share the tooling costs for its top-of-the line F3. Even today, half a century later, the Santa Fe F-unit remains an icon of railroading to the American public.
Capture the excitement of the first-generation diesel era with this full-scale S Gauge model. With two flywheel-equipped motors, the M.T.H. F3 duplicates the bulldog tenacity of its prototype. Proto-Sound 3.0 offers authentic EMD 567 prime mover sounds, a first-generation diesel horn and bell, crew and station sounds, and the ability to maintain any speed down to 3 scale miles per hour. Our model features the “chicken wire” screens and rectangular rooftop dynamic brake grilles that characterize most F3s, as well as a host of added-on details - including legible builder’s plates, grab irons, steam generator exhaust stack (for passenger car heating), windshield wipers, and trucks with separately-applied spring hangers and brake cylinders.

I doubt that MTH really wants to truly be a S Gauge producer. Rather they are a stumbling Block to what once was the greatest S Gauge product made. I wouldn't doubt that MTH and Lionel got to gather and said one of us has to stop the Manufacturing of this great product so we can raise prices and go BTO ordering with our own products. So MTH said we will stall a good product and Lionel can sell a second class product to the starving SGauge market where their is very little compitition. The Club that I belong to BSG has had a Reefer Club car on order since March 2016. After many e-mails, phone calls, many promises MTH still has not delivered our cars as of March 2018. I can't imagine having a problem with one of their products what their service Department would be like to deal with. I'm glad I bought when SHelper ran a very very GREAT BUSINESS & SERVICE. MTH is old tooling to say the least. Very unlucky for those that could not buy when SHelper made all their first runs. Just my 2 cents worth!

Will you please let us know what your plans are for S? MTH bought S-Helper Service in 2012. These F units were released in 2017 and this video was posted in 2018... I know there were issues and I know S is not a priority for MTH, but good night... at this rate most of the S scale modelers will have died of old age before you get the rest of the SHS products to market let alone any new tooling. Your approach to only continue S IF customers buy what you put out is flawed in my opinion. I personally purchased an F3, but I won't be buying anything else unless there is some commitment from MTH that you are ACTUALLY going to make these products. I'm ready to get out of S because you are taking too long getting these products to market. How do I know if you are going to release them all or if you are never going to make another S product? How can one get started in S not knowing what the future holds? Lionel committed to doing S a few years ago and since has decided to do only American Flyer products and leave more scale minded customers wanting. If S is not a priority and you have no intention of pursuing it then just say so. I spend quite a bit on my hobby and I'd be happy to continue to purchase multiple F units, SWs, NWs, 2-8-0s, and anything new like the E7 which you have designs for. Pushing back the catalog from Fall '17 to mid '18 does not give us much confidence that we will be seeing anything new anytime soon. I am the Admin of the S scale group on Facebook and I would be happy to share any info or thoughts you want the nearly 1000 S scalers to hear if you contact me or join the group at facebook.com/groups/Sscale/

    Those couplers look like shit.
At least you made it DCC compatible. Really the very least you could do, still leaps and bounds better than lionel.
For the love of God please make a decent Berkshire model. You could put a 2 year old in charge of the tooling and it would still turn out 1 million times better than that garbage retooled polar express Lionel has been pedaling for years.
