When i heard that a horse was down on the track my heart stopped. To hear that it was Eight Belles made my heart break and i burst into tears. I may not be a racing fan and this might be the first derby i ever saw but it goes to show how much it hurts to see such a beautiful creature die. RIP baby girl u deserve a good rest.
What happened to Eight Belles wasn't even fair. She was a great filly with a lot of talent and heart. When they said a horse was down I was already sad, but to learn it was the filly almost made me cry. She could've been so great, too. . .
I will miss Luke. He would put down the mic and come down to Champions Lounge and watch Hollywood Park. Died of a cardiac problem. Never be the same without him...he lived for this!
the announcer announced Belles plenty of time, and shes still a great filly for beating all the boys but brown, but still, second in a big field like that of boys.. Belles was amazing
I've owned horses and I know they are competitive animals and love to race each other. I don't like aspects of horseracing like the gambling and too-rigorous training, but running is instinctual and they love it. No human could force them to put their hearts into it like they do.
I love all horses theres no reason to hate a awesome creature but the truth with everyone starting this whole thing whos better well the best are here -Ruffian-Secretariat -Man O War-Affirmed-Dr. Fager-Forego-Seattle Slew-Swaps-Kelso-Seabiscuit-War Admiral-Landalucy-Rachel Alexandra-Zenyatta-Curlin-Eight Belles-Big Brown-Smarty Jones-Barbaro-Black Caviar-Uncle Mo-Foolish Pleasure-Cigar- and theres much more but these are the favorites mostly Ruffian NOW GO LOOK EM UP!
Brownie was a very talented colt, on the dirt AND the turf. Too bad he didnt have Jess Jackson as an owner, we'd be watching him perform as a 4YO, maybe even as a 5YO after that..
RIP EIGHT BELLES. However folks I do believe we have our triple crown winner here! 17 hands high her delicate body just could not take the weight. reminds me of the deathof the wonderful grey a few years ago in the Grand National in England. awesome race. Dennis of Cork should be watched too. However Big Browns triple crown to win or lose! Was glad they played "run for the roses again"
What a sad day. Glad that Big Brown won, and wonderful to see the filly, Eight Bells hold on like she did. They seemed to buddy up together right away following each other and keeping pace. I watched this video earlier too and saw the rider of Eight Bells on the right side of the screen as a shadow flying off her as she went down. That part of the video is no longer on here. WHY? I know what I saw!
This is Totally Amazing..Thank you for posting. I hope everyone gets out and sees #50to1themovie . The movie chronicles the journey of #MineThatBird and his Owners and trainers from the beginning to the win at The Kentucky Derby. The writing is superb and the cast is amazing. I can' wait to see #ChristianKane on the big screen!
When they will do anything for you and put their all into it just to please you. I don't race but I show horse and you can tell that certin horses love their job. Some are happy and excell at showing and being in the ring. Some don't like it and love going on an releaxing trail and some just love to run. I agree with Cowpoop49 by the way.
I feel really bad for Big Brown. Not that I don't care about Eight Belles, but he had to deal with people hating him for being on the anabolic steriod (which he won twice without and the third he had a hoof problem, which is what they RUN ON so of course that would hurt his chances) and because of the filly collapsing he didn't get all the attention due a Derby winner.
He wasn't on drugs when he won the Haskell or his final race, which was against older horses. Not every horse can say they won on two surfaces, and beat older horses, and he did that while he wasn't on steroids. Your comment pretty much proves my point - people hear about the steroid and can't see past it even when it's not a factor in the equation.
Eight Belles. Barbaro. Things have got to change in the racing 'industry' here in the US. They need to run horses whose skeletons are fully developed so they don't break limbs, to breed them to have larger, stronger bones, to train them instead of break them, to breed and run them for endurance, not speed. And more importantly- it needs to be isolated to A circuit. The backyard/over-breeding is why the market is flooded with unwantedhorses who are sent to slaughter in Canada/Mexico.
I love how people who know nothing about horse racing can hear about something like Eight Belles and decide they know everything about the sport and give their 2 cents on how cruel it is, yes there are some problems with the sport but nothings perfect. For people who dont know she didnt go down during the racing it was after, she tripped while being slowed, ill admit i cried for her but that could happen to any horse anywhere. Accidents happen everywhere unfortunately, its a part of life.
Oh Eight Belles, what a heart, what a valiant effort, what a tragic result of innocent horse courage and drive coupled with line breeding that guarantees disaster. All the horses in the race descended from Native Dancer? Breed out! Give these noble "beasts" a chance to do what they are meant to do, run to make the humans rich, but without sacrificing their lives in agony.
drugs or no drugs, big brown was a beast. watch his final 2 races when he wasn't on anything. this horse had another gear that you just don't see often. unfortunately big brown had some idiotic trainers
such a shame eight belles had to be ptu down, for me she was the most remarkable mare since ruffian ^^ what if she wouldnt have been injured...? would she have beat big brown?
And NO I didn't watch the race here or on TV..haven't since I saw what happened to Ruffian, that was my last viewing of a horse 'race'. My mom called and told me what happened.
It´s interesting what makes a horse popular. Dieing after a race or winning a race? Sorry but no one talked about Big Brown in any german horse journal. I guess cause many people likes to watch accidents, more then races. -_-' But I´m wondering, why did they had to run AFTER the race?! Well, Eight Belles was a good filly, every horse I know wouldn´t keep running. Didn´t the jockey noticed something? Has she any offsprings?
Nice race by Big Brown, but I'm done watching the horses. Eight Belles was the last straw. How many times do we have to watch horses get run to their death? Barbaro was a fine race horse, and we all were hoping for a miracle recovery. Most people only watch the big races, so I would imagine that this is happening rather regularly in the sport. There is no other conclusion than to call it cruelty.
There were nothing wrong with Eight Bells at the start of the race! Everyone looks for something or someone to blame..I call it what it is .. a very serious injury! It happens to humans when they play sports and sadly it happens to horses. Eight Bells ran a huge race! If a horse is not right mentally or phyical they would not run like she did!
Big Brown is now here in Australia, his first crop has already produced a 9f winner by 4 lengths in Sydney, an amusing comment by the trainer is he's a nice type of horse but dumb as hell.
screw eight belles.. it was just a horse.. this was the late great Luke Kruytbosch last derby call ever before he died. horses die all the time from injuries. get used to it.
Sadly..beautiful animals exploited for entertainment and monetry gain....Admitedly its a natural instinct for horses to run but at what cost. Remember to the 70% of racehorses that never race or live past 2 y o
WHEN!??When are those money grubbing bastards going to stop killing horses!?? You CAN'T race 2 year olds!! They KNOW their bones aren't hard or strong enough to take the weight and pounding, but they keep destroying great horses for a buck regardless. They make me sick!! The only way this will change is if YOU the public STOP SUPPORTING THIS INDUSTRY!! NO horse is safe to RUN as a 2 year old.
When i heard that a horse was down on the track my heart stopped. To hear that it was Eight Belles made my heart break and i burst into tears. eight belles was a champ even though she has left us her legend still lives and she will always be known as the filly who left 17 colt in the dust
What happened to Eight Belles wasn't even fair. She was a great filly with a lot of talent and heart. When they said a horse was down I was already sad, but to learn it was the filly almost made me cry. She could've been so great, too. . .
r.i.p. eight belles. she was such a beauty. i cry everytime i watch this.

Rest In Peace sweet girl! You ran a wonderful race with the big boys! You will be missed.
poor eight bells she was such a good horse. RIP eight bells we will always remember you
Great race destroyed by the tragedy of Eight Belles. RIP to a beautiful horse that ran her heart out.
Amen. Second best 3 year old that year. Period.
I love Eight Belles... she was such an amazing filly and I wish she hadn't died. Wish i could have met her, but then it would be even more sad.
I've owned horses and I know they are competitive animals and love to race each other. I don't like aspects of horseracing like the gambling and too-rigorous training, but running is instinctual and they love it. No human could force them to put their hearts into it like they do.

LOVE derby replays! --The Great American Dollhouse Museum
Big Brown ran a good race like all the other races hes run.
but my love will always be for Eight Belles the day she broke down:(
r.i.p
this is my camera work btw.. i shot this race and im the one behind the camera .. wooo
Nothing gave me greater pleasure than watching horse after horse run past him in the Belmont.
Brownie was a very talented colt, on the dirt AND the turf. Too bad he didnt have Jess Jackson as an owner, we'd be watching him perform as a 4YO, maybe even as a 5YO after that..
I went to the Kentucky Derby Meseum today... RIP Eight Bells.

Most anyone who lives & works with individual animals gets to know their thoughts & feelings quite well.
@johnofohu123 You forgot Citation and Count Fleet. ;) But I know it's impossible to name all of them. :)
What a sad day.

Big Brown! Big Brown! Big Brown while doped up on steroids wins the Kentucky Derby!! Big Brown!
Like most every other horse it was legal then.
I miss you Fugs R.I.P.
I heard that shortly after this race, during a later one, Eight Belles actually broke both of her front legs and had to be put down on the racetrack.

R.I.P Eight Belles,
And NO I didn't watch the race here or on TV..haven't since I saw what happened to Ruffian, that was my last viewing of a horse 'race'. My mom called and told me what happened.
Nice race, poor Eight Belles. Why do the great ones always die so young? I can't believe Gayego got 17th! Grr...
When Eight Belles collapsed I cryed because after the race she died
Eight Belles the winner!!!
RIP :(

eight belles? NOTHING ABOUT EIGHT BELLES?!?!?!?!
hi mama ako si michael
r.i.p eight belles
those poor horses being forced to race for their human masters, so there will be no more cases like poor Eight Bells
RIP poor girl ):
i hoping so much that eight bells would of kept the number 2 position win but they decide to drop her just because she had to be put down
0:20
It was horrible - they killed her on the track. I never wanna see anything like that again. So tragic.
You got some real issues!!!!
Hey foxrunm
Where did you learn how to spell animals ?
Can you say SPELL CHECK ?
rip eight belles

Sad day

Big Brown is now here in Australia, his first crop has already produced a 9f winner by 4 lengths in Sydney, an amusing comment by the trainer is he's a nice type of horse but dumb as hell.
Yeah Big Brown was a monster all right... monster on drugs.. but that is how you yanks do your racing :P
screw eight belles.. it was just a horse.. this was the late great Luke Kruytbosch last derby call ever before he died. horses die all the time from injuries. get used to it.
No, he didn't get attention because he was on steroids... champion my ass... doped up to the gills.
2nd place then dies. epic way to go out
Horsey Heaven LMFAO
Yes but he was on steroids when he won the Derby.. enough said.
I cant believe they would chuck such a commentator onto a race like this, he sucked, but the race was good.
Sadly..beautiful animals exploited for entertainment and monetry gain....Admitedly its a natural instinct for horses to run but at what cost. Remember to the 70% of racehorses that never race or live past 2 y o

How can you talk like this when a great filly dies trying to win the big race. Very rude!
