I live in Finland and we don't have these kind of racehorses, the ones that gallop, only the once who trot. So even though I have lived with horses all my life, I never followed this sport particually. Then came the year 2007, I was 16 years old and I lost my horse, that had been in my family all my life, before I was born even. Couple months after that, I got sick and have to stay home and after a couple of days it was getting boring, so I remember going to TH-cam to find something. Just something. And I can't remember how I ended up watching Barbaro memorial videos, but I remember the feeling that I had to know more about him and I started searching and learned more about this amazing horse and the battle he fought. I watched this race and I cried and all day, I just watched all the Barbaro videos in TH-cam and cried. It helped with my own pain a little. And I believe there is a place where all the horses go after they leave us. And even though I only learned about him after he was gone, Barbaro is one of the names that I will never forget.
Knowing what I know, it's always an honor to watch this but also brings a tear to my eye, especially as the race caller goes "he's saved something up ....".. oh man! RIP dear ole Barbaro
I'm not a keen follower or fan of horseracing, so perhaps it's because I watched this video already knowing Barbaro's fate, but for whatever reason, when they turned that final corner, and he took off, I got goosebumps and a lump in my throat. Beautiful performance.
I bawled like a baby when I found out they had to put him down. He was so great. I only pay attention to horse racing this time of year as well. Racing literally killed him, but I wouldn't have known of this horse without it. Such a conundrum...
You should also watch races by Zenyatta, Ruffian, Secretariat, in that order.. but not ruffian's match race in case you dont know that story. I might be biased..two of those were girls. But really..from a purely biological standpoint, any girl that can trash the best of the boys is something beyond special. Secretariat is only at the top of my list because of that one race..you will know the one if you watch his races. I listed them in order of what I think a non race person would appreciate.
Feel the sam abt Secretariat but hits closer to home wth Barbaro bc I'm from the Philly area. We aren't known for breeding race horses like Kentucky so Barbaro was special.

My Dad and I never stopped praying. I bought 4 Barbaro Ty horses with number 8. And 2 beautiful, framed pictures to donate to Laminitus. I don't care who makes fun of me. People all over were making posters, posting prayers. Edgar Prado would drive 2 hours to visit his true champion horse, Barbaro. A true, wonderful Jockey. I miss Edgar Prado. He helped Barbaro in the Preakness by stopping Barbaro when he ran out of the gate too soon. I truly believe, if that hadn't happened, Barbaro had the makings of being a Triple Crown winner. His ashes are buried at Churchill downs. I'll always love and respect Barbaro. 😘😞👼

I got a colectomy in jan 2007, recovering at home and checking daily updates on barbaro's health. He was battling to live in such a gracious manner when he suddenly got bad and had to be put down. I was devastated and carried some sadness for a bit of time. I always think of him a little more each kentucky derby....
I just had to see this again for the first time in so many years! Seeing him start to hit it before the final turn and then pulling away down the stretch! He was most likely going to be a triple crown winner! What a horse!! I'm sure he won it after crossing over the rainbow bridge!😢
I miss the big guy. Such a inspirational horse. Will never forget him. I think he would have won the triple crown. Its a damn shame he got hurt. God bless him.
We'll obviously never know, I truly believe barbaro would have won the triple crown. He owns the 2nd largest margin of victory in the Kentucky derby. Btw, the largest margin was by Assualt, a triple crown winner. He had it, speed and stamina. Damn
They tried to save Barbaro's life after his tragic run at Belmont. He should've been put down right after the race, because it's nearly impossible to save a horse with a broken leg, and that right hind leg was broken in 20 places. The first surgery was somewhat of a success at first, but about 3 weeks later, in July, 2006 he developed complications and diseases that threatened his life. His owners tried for 6 more months to get him back to health but it was no use, and in January, 2007, he died.

9083393204 Mcdonald thank you too! We all need to remember that the horses don't choose their profession. In UK a month ago, we lost poor Many Clouds, who was a great Grand National winner in 2014. A lot of people shed a tear that day too.

My most memorable 2 wins of my life with the second having a bad taste. I took Barbaro to win KD and he paid astronomically. Then, on a wim, I took him to finish dead last in the race he broke his leg. It was the most unhappy win of my life when I realized what was happening.
I heard sometime back that Barbaro logged the 7th fastest time in Derby history. Since he was in stalking mode until about 2/3 into the race when he finally made his move, his home stretch run was historic, maybe the fastest of all time. I'd like to see a comparison between Barbaro's final third vs Secretariat's in '73. Both ran similar races and Secretariat logged a faster time than Barbaro but Secretariat made his move a bit earlier in the race so Barbaro might've had the better final leg.
@@mstrunn Secretariat was fast the whole race and logged the better overall time. I'm referring strictly to the final third when Barbaro went from 4th to winning the race by 7 lengths.
@@madcapper6 Barbaros Derby was faster at 6f but they really slowed down going from 6f to 8f, that split was 26s but the final quarter was finished in about 24s so Barbaro really picked up the pace at the end. However, Secretariat looks like he finished in just over 23s, Sham having the second fastest derby probably creates an illusion as to how they finished. Regardless, both were special.

I actually sent Barbaro a crucifix, a rosary from the Vatican, prayer cards, cds and peppermints when he was in the hospital.
