    Ukai is a traditional fishing method using trained cormorants to catch river fish such as Ayu also known as sweetfish. Ukai cormorant fishing has been around for over 1300 years, most prominently along the Nagaragawa River in Gifu City, where in the past the master fishermen have official patronage from the emperor, today however all Ayu catch are sold to surrounding hotels and ryokan.
    Ukai cormorant fishing includes one master fisherman, one helper and one person to steer the boat as well as around 12 cormorant birds swimming alongside the boat are catching fish attracted by the boat light.
    The catch are kept in a special pouch in the cormorant's throat and retrieved later. To prevent cormorant from swallowing their large catch, fisherman put a snare around the neck of the bird while still allowing the cormorant eat smaller fish.
    Despite some common misunderstanding, cormorant are extremely well treated and valuable to fishermen, no arm to the cormorant is done at any time.

    Do they get any freedom of movement at all or is their entire life spent between a tight box and a short rope?

    Qué vida mas triste llevan los cormoranes

      Me sorprendió ver cuán complicados eran los cormoranes con sus dueños, yendo a ellos para conseguir comida, no tenía la impresión de que su vida fuera miserable.

      I see, it just looked a little brutal:P

    • @TokyoStreetView
      @TokyoStreetView  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Looks brutal since the fisherman do it like it is no big deal. Simply put after years of doing this and to know how to not hurt and handle these birds he goes fast without really paying attention. So for us, all these movements look brutal. A bit like a farmer with cows for example and unlike if it was your beloved pet ;-).
      Listen, I am pro-animal and I would not have published something where animal are not treated well, this explain for example why I have not published any videos on the Fox Village, what I saw there is animal cruelty and I would only hope that some goes there and close this place.
