- This review is for those travelers looking to check out Ko Phi Phi Le (including Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon), just outside Phi Phi Island in Thailand. We traveled there while we were staying in Phuket, but there are a few routes that can be taken to get there as well from Krabi or other local places.

You can only get to Phi Phi Island by boat. Coming from Phuket, it's around 1000 Baht for a roundtrip ticket and about a 1 ½ to 2 hour boat ride to Phi Phi. Boats leave only a few times throughout the day with the earliest ferry leaving Phuket at 8:30am and heading back from Phi Phi at 2:30pm so if you are making a day trip there without staying the night, you will have only around 4-5 hours at most on the Island.
On the boat over there are food and drink available for purchase (including local beers). Cash only. The boat has seating up on the top deck which is open, or on the middle and lower levels which are covered. Getting to the dock earlier will ensure that you get a good seat.
While there are many things to do on Phi Phi, many choose to venture to Ko Phi Phi Lee. You can do a group tour via speed boat, which is typically with 20-30 other people, not very fun. Or you can get a more authentic and private tour on a longtail boat. Upon arrival in Phi Phi, you’ll be met by several longtail boat drivers willing to take you to the island for around 2000 Baht. Definitely worth the extra money. We went with a group of 4 of us and there was plenty of room, they stop where you want to and its so much more enjoyable than a speed boat.
*If you have back problems or get motion sickness, the longtail boats can be difficult when the waters are rough being very bumpy.
Its a nice ride over to Ko Phi Phi Le, about 20-30 minutes. The popular things to do once Ko Phi Phi Le is to visit Maya Bay, which was made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie The Beach. We recommend going early in the morning to beat the crowds otherwise it'll be way overcrowded with hundreds of other people. If you choose to stop at Maya Bay beach, there is a 400 Baht entrance fee to get onto the beach.
The next stop we recommend is at Pileh lagoon which is very scenic and a bit more low key compared to Maya bay while allows for a more privacy and seclusion. Our longtail boat driver pulled into a small beach area where we were the only ones for about 30 minutes where we were able to enjoy snorkeling and swimming in the gorgeous waters of the Lagoon.
The trip back to Phi Phi Island is very scenic as you will be passing several great photo opportunities, coves and Pirate Cave which is popular with the tourists.
Once back on Phi Phi Island, you probably only have a short amount of time left before the ferry departs (probably less than an hour). Use this time to explore the local shops and restaurants or head to the other side of Phi Phi Island to Loh Delum Beach to relax before boarding the ferry back to Phuket. You can walk at least 100 years at Loh Delum beach and still be able to stand.

Pileh Lagoon is the most amazing place I ever been. 😍 It's feel surreal when you are there.
We stayed 10 days at Long Beach Phi Phi.
I never had the chance to visit Phi Phi yet. It looks so beautiful
I wish we could have stayed longer there, maybe overnight at least 1 night during our trip as it was pretty amazing and so beautiful! I highly recommend checking it out if you ever get the opportunity.

I did the Phi Phi Island Tour on November 8th, 2017. My first stop was Maya Bay and the water was super colorful. There were a lot of tourists there, especially Russian and Chinese tourists. I can't remember the name of our second stop, but I had a lot of fun snorkeling in the bright, green colored water. My last 2 stops were decent. Took a lot of pictures. I highly recommend taking the speed boat for the island tours because you get to visit more islands. My friend and I paid $75 US each person from a vendor in Patong. I knew we overpaid because we met some American tourists and the paid $50 US each person, but they purchased the ticket in Krabi. My friend and I tried our best to get the best deal, but they were very hard to bargain with. I guess prices vary from town to town. Great video by the way

Buying ticket and leaving from Krabi is cheaper than leaving from Phuket.

Finally, an actual informative video. Thank you! If we choose to rent the long tail boat, do they provide snorkelling gear? I followed an island hopping tour years ago but didn't enjoy it, everything was so rushed.
Thanks, Reek! I do not believe they had any snorkeling gear available, however, I think right there by the dock(s) they have a few small shops that you can rent them. We bought our own set on Amazon: amzn.to/2pp2QCf. Very much worth the money to have your own pair.

Hi there. I'm going to bangkok in several weeks and also plan on going to koh phi phi. Will those long boats take you to all the places you listed here? I plan on doing a day trip from phuket...
Hey Chris! Yeah, once on Phi Phi you'll see a ton of longtail boats. Really any of them will take you. They can show you where to go, or you can be specific. We said we wanted to see Maya Bay and also do some snorkeling. It mainly depends on the time you have on Phi Phi. If you take the ferry over from Phuket, you'll only have a short amount of time, so just make sure they know when yo get you back. The speedboats from Phuket usually are an all day thing and hit most of those places, but those are more so group tours with 20+ people, whereas the longtail boat if just you.

M&J Delgado Nope. Pulled it out and tossed it up. No issues at all. Actually wish I did more with it there as the shots were amazing!
Phi phi islands- you need minimum 10 days to really see it and enjoy- beautiful place - just been there 3 days ago..wow..be ready for boating a lot or hire kayak..(but I have to say the phi phi don is destroyed by too many people (I find water in Costa bravo Spain cleaner than there)..

The National Park of Thailand has made a decision for mooring and swimming at Maya Bay to be prohibited nowadays, to do not disturb all sharks and reef corals. The sharks were back to Maya Bay and the corals were recovering since the bay was shut off during COVID-19

Breath taking yes, but secluded?
Ha. You're right. Most of it is not secluded by any means. However, there was a small little beach in Pileh Lagoon that really only had room for 1, maybe 2 boats, so we had that beach to ourselves almost the entire time we were there.
I went to Phi Phi in 1988.
There was only one high class private resort and about 100 metres of shops and restaurants and only 1 other beach hut resort. It was secluded then. Progress huh!?
Good for the Thai people but not so good for the scenery.

Do you need to ask before flying drone?
Hi Aki. I do not believe so from our experience. I went through customs and everything without any issues. I saw several people throwing drones up as well so I would imagine you do not need permission. Hope this helps!
You have to register with the local police in the area now as of 2018. Be careful...
