    I had never played any Yakuza game and only heard good things about. Plus whenever I saw the brawler gameplay I thought it looked pretty fun! I finally got to playing YAKUZA 0 and holy crap. My expectations were blown away. I am a full on follower of Kiryu and Majima now.

    Yakuza started off as a niche hidden gem game, then it gained traction for the great memes it provided, then people fell in love with everything about it, and finally it did the surprisingly difficult task of escaping its memedom to be genuinely beloved worldwide.
    If any series deserves an arc like that, I'm glad it's Yakuza.

    The Yakuza series was what I always wanted from the Shenmue games, and you can see parts of the DNA of those titles in Yakuza, but each part has been carefully honed, polished, iterated and expanded on. They are incredibly compelling experiences, and It's fantastic to see them still getting new players who want to go back and take in the whole of the series.

      It practically _is_ an extension of Shenmue. Toshihiro Nagoshi worked under Yu Suzuki for a long time, and even took over the role of producer and director of Shenmue in it's last few months of development by request from the CEO of SEGA at the time, who knew Yu Suzuki trusted him most.
      Yakuza shares much of it's blood, which is no surprise.

    3-5 are ‘rougher’ yes, but purely because they’re the oldest ones that are playable on modern hardware. I can’t recommend playing them highly enough though - they still have the same heart and soul that 0 does (and fwiw iirc 5, 0 and K1 are all built on the same engine). Also the events that take place really have a deeply rooted impact on Kiryu’s life. There’s a key location in 3 that you briefly revisit in 6 and even that brief revisit made me immensely happy. This game series has stuck with me more than any game series ever has. The Yakuza story feels alive and exciting in ways that I cannot explain. It feels like these characters are real. The stories they tell, the characters they develop…it genuinely might be on such an incredible level that I’ve never seen it before. Games never make me cry. And I mean NEVER. Movies don’t, books don’t, news channels don’t. Nothing makes me cry. I think that before I started playing the Yakuza series I had cried a grand total of twice in my illustrious gaming career. Yakuza 0 alone made me cry twice. The whole ordeal with Tachibana made me cry a bit, and the ending to Majima’s half of the story made me cry like a goddamn waterfall basically. I could’ve filled a bathtub with the amount of tears I cried during Yakuza Kiwami’s ending. Kiwami 2 almost got me, but not quite. Yakuza 3 had me tearing up but I didn’t cry. Point being…Yakuza had made me cry. Any game that has a story that makes me cry gets my utmost respect. And the Yakuza series has made me cry or tear up at least 7 times.

    given how much you liked Yakuza, I suggest checking out Judgement and it's sequel. it's the same series but it's own self contained story. it's also gives a different perspective of the world in game, and the gameplay is yakuza cranked up.

  • @j4ke56

    I pretty much had the same experience as you mid last year and have binged the entire series since, all the way through to 7 now. I would maybe say skip 3 if you're really not feeling it, but I'd say to still give it a go, and definitely play 4 and 5. 5 was the game before 0 and feels closest to it, and it has some of my favourite moments from the whole series.

    I really liked this more casual approach with twitch gameplay in the background, definitely a nice way to spice it up from the more dedicated videos! Hoping to see more of these alongside the normal reviews :)

    I've started playing the series in 2019, with 0 as well. Then played the Kiwami games, followed by 3 and 4. Needless to say, I fell in love with the series and I will continue playing the games in order at a reasonable pace.
    I can describe Yakuza as a very good friend I get to hang out with only once, maybe twice a year, but have an absolute blast every time.
    Oh, and fuck the people that say you shouldn't start with 0 because every other game will be a letdown. It is not true. Even if 0 is currently my favorite, all of them were fantastic so far.

    yessssssss this series is so good. also a detail you will notice is the cities age with the games. it's super cool the arcades get upgraded with newer games and smile burger turns into something else buildings in construction finish being built. Super cool level of detail.

    I have to advocate not to skip any games because while Yakuza 3 especially is rough around the edges the experience of the world of Yakuza and playing each game and seeing not only Kamurocho change but how the side quests are effected by the time they're set in is something worth playing through.

    • @Rtickong
      @Rtickong ปีที่แล้ว

      By skip I mean watching the Cutscenes of Yakuza 3-5

    • @ellocojoncrazy3270
      @ellocojoncrazy3270 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rtickong yeah, but these are games, that use gameplay to tell story, its not going to be as good of a experience by only seeing the cutsenes on youtube, lol. I will say that after kiwami 2, he should take a break of Yakuza, and then play the rest.

    • @DrunkenCoward1
      @DrunkenCoward1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Without Yakuza 3 you miss out on a lot of stuff in the games after it.
      Like, yea, the gameplay is rough, but that's like skipping “The Two Towers“ because of some arbitrary reason but still reading “Return of the King“.

  • @Ziodyne_

    The Yakuza series has become one of my favorite series over these last 3 years, so I'm glad to see you enjoying them for the first time! Unless you're REALLY strapped for time, I wouldn't recommend skipping 3-5. They're not essential to an overarching narrative, so if you really want to skip them go ahead, but they're all still great games. If anything, I recommend ONLY skipping 3.

    I started with Like a Dragon, because I was fascinated that it was an RPG & I had heard it had a new protagonist, so it’s a good jumping on point.
    Holy shit.
    I think I had just about the same reaction as you Jarod. I was floored by the story, the addictive gameplay (there’s a business sim I got hooked on especially), and I also found the main character, Ichigo, oddly inspiring. He’s so good-natured, loyal & determined, no matter what misfortune befalls him. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts when you get to it.

    No other games have ever made me feel the way Yakuza 0,1,2,6, and 7 have. The best stories in video games imo. Made even better by how the side quests are the complete opposite in terms of tone (outside of the occasional Majima moments in K1 and 2).

    I understand if they idea of playing all those games sounds too much considering just how busy you probably are, but i really think if you have the time to actually go and play through 3-6 after you beat Kiwami 1 and 2. You’ll get a better appreciation for the characters in them than just watching the cutscene, plus you’ll need to play them to fully understand just how amazing and wonderful Akiyama is when you meet him
