Also… the last 3 minutes are a separate track called “Drones”… it’s the end of the Drones album, they used it in the World Tour to introduce the concert (which was gorgeous) and then they used it to set up for the Encore at Festivals and a few other concerts I believe… if you were there it made sense and was gorgeous. And obviously it had to be track as Matt can’t sing 10 tracks at once and allowed him to get ready for the Encore 😅 Muse rarely… if ever use track but when they do it’s very much in context of the concert… in the case of this one, it was supposed to calm down and anticipate the crowd for the next song which then turns it up to 11… and it really works!
Too counteract the 16 minutes you just heard you should review The Small Print - Muse (Earls Court 2004) . its the polar opposite of what you just heard.
Ah well Matt is a fan of classical music, and this piece is a mini three part symphony. He taught himself to play Rachmaninov by listening to it which I couldn’t do after years of lessons lol. He isn’t alone, Jon Lord the late and much missed keyboard player of Deep Purple fame was classically trained and also wanted to fuse classical and rock music. Luckily I love both genres but not everyone will. The last bit Drones is a re write of a piece of baroque choral music, Matt sings all the parts in the recording.
I always feel like this song is a music IQ test showcasing the band's incredible talent. Matt moving through various instruments. Chis starting out on the guitar. Dom singing. The rise and fall of it as it culminates the end of the world and the aftermath. It's not just music, it's art.
Muse have always been a mix of classical music and rock. That has always been their thing, even their heavier rock songs have hints of classical in them. You’ve mostly reacted to their heavier stuff but Muse are actually for the most part a softer band and almost if not over half of their discography is piano focused or has piano in it. People don’t really go to see Muse for a full on rock concert because people know they are not just a rock band, so it isn’t really a rock show as a whole. I think maybe because you’ve mostly listened to all their heavy stuff you’ve kind of come to the impression that they are just a rock band, but if you listen to all their albums, you’ll see that a lot of their discography isn’t full on rock. Muse are a very odd fusion of many genres and sub-genres and don’t really conform to one.
That's not completely true. Yes, they often use piano in their songs, but 90% of their songs are on guitar and they ARE a rock band. That's how they identify themselves and that's how the public sees them, as the majority of their songs fall in the rock genre (mostly prog rock, alt rock and art rock). In fact, people go to Muse concerts to see a rock show, as they are a lot heavier and more energetic live than in the albums (outros, Matt going wild, etc.). Although their compositional roots trace back to the classical world due to Matt's background, their music is unmistakably rock. The Globalist is an experiment, and I highly doubt they'll ever play it again.
@@nerea4327 I never said they are not rock… I said they are not *just* a rock band because of the fact their discography is so vast and unique. And while the majority of their songs are not piano, a lot of them contain piano or traces of piano… even heavier songs like Stockholm Syndrome have piano in them. While yes their live shows are mostly rock and very energetic, you’d find that (not a lot on the WOTP tour) but in a lot of their tours they might have an entire space in the set dedicated to piano based songs.
I appreciate your honesty. This song is from the album drones which is a concept album. I don't think some people actually understand that. Where there are some good individual songs this album only really works if you listen to it from start to finish. Which I know most people aren't going to do. I almost feel like the album is in the wrong dacade and if it was released in the 70's / 80's it would have done better. Also I know you have been told to watch this video but I wish the people that recommend which video to watch would actually get you to watch versions that are better. I know you will probably say that nothing will make that song better. But the production that they did during the drones tour was miles better than what they did at Glastonbury and I think that this song is an experience song and it's probably more about the visuals than the music. It's like a mini soundtrack.
I just love this song. I love the long intro. The music is eery and just splendid. Don't know who can dislike this song if they truly love Muse. It's so them.
Didn't think you'd be giddy about this tune. I share a lot of the same feelings. This song didn't need to be this long to be effective. Didn't help that the requester included the last three minutes, which isn't even part of the song, and was simply playback. Love the honesty as always DH!
Oh dear....well I'm afraid one day David will have to listen again. As I requested the album version lol about 2 and a half years ago lol. I agree it's on the long side. And wish the heavy side was much longer. However I think the softer stuff showcases what Muse are capable of. Just more fat riffs please. The last 3 mins is a separate track called "Drones" on the Drones album, which follows "The Globalist" So you won't have to suffer those 3 minutes next time out David 😆
Hey David! Matt describes the song as being a ten-minute prog-rock nightmare dealing with the rise and fall of a dictator and is its own self-contained narrative. He also said that this song tells the same story as the concept section of the album, but with a bad ending. As said by Matt: "The first half sounds like something from a film, then it goes to a middle section that's metal then the outro is a big piano ballad." He also said that this song is one of his favourite songs from the album. You'll always be my favorite reactor man, thank you for being honest and not pandering like everyone else. By the way, the last 3 minute part, the acapella part, is an entirely different song! Don't know why it was included in the timestamps you were given, but it was used as an interlude type during the concert I assume. So, 5 stars? Haha
a story indeed. most of the best songs tell a story. good songs have meaningful and moving lyrics and a vocalist who can turn up the feels. muse shows its quality again if people can have the patience to sit down and listen to the story too. "a trillion memories lost in space and time forever more". this shit is intense. muse isnt just one of my favorite bands because of their musical talent... they are poets too.
When you saw them live they played The Dark Side Alternate Reality Version which is basically 3min of sliding guitar and piano, so when you're saying that you're happy they didn't do something like that soft intro (around 11:00 in the video), well, you're wrong. And seeing you repeting "it's supposed to be a rock show", well again you're wrong : it's supposed to be a show, a Muse show, nothing else. Muse can do rock, but even more. When you saw them they played undisclosed Desires, Madness, Verona, Compliance ; are these rock songs ? No.
Really appreciate you giving this an objective look despite disliking it, I personally love it, but that's just tastes. Let's hope you enjoy your next Muse song more!
This song is a bonus track and its a summary of the album starting with almost like the start of the war, feelings of fear, things building up slowly. Then somethings sets off "all out war, where weapons of mass destruction get used (you can hear the missile strike in the background) where things get chaotic and fast paced but only for a short amount of time before everything is gone and "there is nothing left" then it goes ore solemn looking at feelings of regret, sadness and realisation. The worlds gone, culture, society etc. its not the most energetic song, but one of the best story telling songs out there and is beautifully written. I respect your honesty and opinion on this, but I have to disagree that its boring. I think it is a genuine masterpiece and is heavily underrated.
I think this is one where the story/lyrics of the song do a lot to help. For instance, the last section is just an arrangement of an Elgar song [with added lyrics] but there are some lines in there that I think are really good (like the bit that ends "I think, I destroyed them all"). I wonder if (maybe along with a slightly extended middle section) it would work better if it was split up into 3 separate songs that flow into each other, like exogenesis symphony... It's also kind of a victim of the producer of the album [Drones]. Someone's probably already mentioned this on another reaction, but the producer of the album got the band to re-record parts until they were "perfect" and even then, did a load of automation and editing after that. And it just leaves all the songs sounding really sterile, without the energy that the first few albums had [A good example of this is to compare Psycho (as a full song) to the original riff played at the end of Stockholm Syndrome over a decade before]. And unfortunately, they play the songs live in a similar way to on the album.
As a massive Muse fan i agree with you. I love this song and almost everything they've done, but it's extremely long with absolutely no needing. It's not like Citizen Erased (7 and a half minutes) in wich the lenght has a purpose for the song. This is pure "circling" even though i like it
I'm a fan of muse and I think this song is beautiful, but I never feel like listening to it, it seems too long. I think I heard it when the album came out 10 years ago and I never went back to it 🤣 Greetings from Argentina
Really surprised the request included the Drones track at the end - that was predictable that you would not like this. I'm shocked the request included that section. It was also predictable that the first section would be overly long (I like the song but feel the first part is too long). In my mind i see this like Drones version of Exogenesis Symphony, just as one track this time - 3 distinct sections (excluding the acapella Drones which is a different section) to tell a story. I remember Exogenesis not being your thing either.
There were so many "strong suggestions" from the fans after this tour, that they made a series of presentations with the most requested songs, where they also put to a vote the most loved by the attendees. On the next tour, since they couldn't please everyone, they merged their "heaviest" songs into a 10-minute section as a counterpart to this. Anyway, it was not the most memorable thing in Muse's career
I think Matt needs to write more for movies. He loves the drama. I love this song in context to the album, much like Exogenesis Part 1, 2 and 3. It's amazing when listened to the whole album through. He has written music for World War Z which was great.
lmao. a couple years ago I would've been triggered by your reaction to this song haha. but I was laughin my ass off cause I knew you wouldn't like this song haha. but I gotta say I think you should've listened to the studio version. not that it would've changed your mind but it might've felt different. the thing is that this song followed by drones is a closer to a concept album and tells a story throughout which I personally love. you should listen to The Handler from this album which is an absolute banger
The bass playing in the intro was subtle alright. There was none😂 Chris was playing guitar, not bass. Do you only enjoy songs if they're fast and heavy? Seems to be a very limited scope for your musical taste. You should branch out a little man 😁
Yeah, when I first this song I thought, it's like a large firework with a long wick with so much potential but ends up with a few sparks and smoke. A let down
I enjoy this song but it was labeled as a sequel to citizen erased which is one of their best songs, I am a huge fan of Muse but was very disappointed when I first heard this and rarely listen to it more than once a year, I've heard many fellow muse fans have the same opinion during that heavy guitar part when it ended and went back to the piano, no........ Keep the guitar going!
I wish they didn't make you listen those last 3 minutes, they're not even from The Globalist. I actually get you, i don't like the piano part, i only listen to the intro and the heavier part. But don't worry about next song, I'm actually sure you will like The Handler :)
Completely understood that, the moment I saw the title... my immediate instinct was... 'Dave ain't gonna like this... it's just not his song' :D And there's nothing wrong with that! Appreciate the reaction nonetheless. I was there for this gig at Glasto and it was an odd part of the show, as much as it is beautiful. And Glasto is obviously not a huge rock-orientated scene anyway, so for it to stand out as a bit odd there, it says a lot. They put on a good show as always, but it was BY FAR their weakest Glastonbury performance.
Yes, a lot of paraphernalia. But what impresses me about all this is a band that continues to fill stadiums and make you a 10-minute song, which is so anti-commercial these days.
I love The Globalist, but it's unnecessarily long. Many songs on this album are longer than they had to be. Psycho is another example. Apparently there were some issue between Muse and the producer cause he wanted them to go for the Pink Floyd long conceptual album route. Surprised they played this at a festival.
