- Medals awarded to Second Lieutenant John 'Jack' Harrison, 11th (Hull Tradesmen's) Battalion The East Yorkshire Regiment 1917.
1) Victoria Cross
2) Military Cross
On 3rd May 1917, during the Battle of Arras, the 91st Brigade of the 31st Division attacked Oppy Wood. The Brigade was made up of three battalions all recruited from Hull. The attack was repulsed at high cost - around 750 casualties of which 252 died. Lieutenant Harrison, a former professional rugby league player, was one of these. The citation for his award reads:
"Second Lieutenant Harrison led his company against the enemy trench under heavy rifle and machine-gun fire, but with no success. Then turning around, this gallant officer made a dash at the machine-gun, hoping to knock out the gun, and so save the lives of many. His self sacrifice and absolute disregard of danger was an inspiring example to all."
