Finally someone who takes notice of their great 1st album. It is difficult for me to name favorite songs by them because there is so much high quality with such a huge diversity. But for me this one belongs to the first row. I esp. love the middle part with the citation of Franz Liszt's beautiful Liebestraum (lovedream) the way the drums come in shattering the atmosphere and then the competition of drums and piano destroying the beauty and after the destruction coming back to the wonderful harmonies. A friend of mine once compared the middle part to a riding a sled in an ice tunnel.
If someone is interested in the original piano version here is one performance of a pianist I really like to listen to because after all the decades great artists have played piano music she still often finds a way to play them in her own way.

The vocal harmonies on 'Nothing at all' work so beautifully, as you said, because of the brothers voices blending perfectly. Phil Shulman is the eldest of the three brothers but left the band after their fourth album, he could play a range of wind instruments, keyboards and percussion. Ray was the youngest and died last March, and again was a wonderful multi-instrumentalist. As the band progressed, close harmonies became much more rare in their songs, and they became better known for their counterpoint vocal arrangements, an interweaving of contrasting melody lines that fit together like a puzzle, the proper musical term being 'Contrapuntal'. It's one thing to experiment in the studio with the wide range of instruments each band member could play but seeing them live was astonishing. The stage was littered with instruments and in a lot of songs they would be swapping from one to the other within the same piece, sometimes for just a few bars. Props to their roadies and sound guys, it must have been an almighty logistical and technical challenge to set up and mix each night. If you liked the drum bridge in this track, check out the version of 'So sincere' from their live album 'Playing the fool' , where every band member joins in on the drums. I was so lucky to see them each time they toured the UK, but in the days before the internet their fans had to scour the music press for any fragment of information of tours or albums. Sadly they were not liked or appreciated much by UK music journalists, the band were just too far ahead of their time and could not be pigeon holed. GG's uncompromising creative stand meant their music was never going to find mass appeal or be heard on the radio, they were hardly pin-up material either or about to give you catchy choruses, they made the listener work hard to keep up. It is gratifying to know that more folks are finally discovering them now, and are vastly more open minded to their music.

The first time I saw them ~'71. The audience were like deer's staring into the headlights. They didn't know what hit him. Most came to see Tull. They really didn't have a clue. To me Gentle Giant should be the definition of what prog is. Today no one can define it. (in a hundred words or less) Zappa was right about them.

Good for you for diving into early 1st GG. This song is true to their name Gentle yet Giant! The first 3 albums are brilliantly unique compared to the ones that later eventually consolidated their signature counterpoint style. Creatively their sophistication soared from this to their 3rd album. This, their prog-psychedelic 1st album immediately demonstrated that GG were not going to be your ordinary outfit considering the drastic transformation from their previous fairly successful British Pop incarnation called Simon Dupree and the Big Sound. They reformed and completely changed their entire ethos with this album. Their 2nd & 3rd are one-of-a-kind masterpieces!

The thing about this first album was it included songs that were from the transition period from Simon Dupree to Gentle Giant, so it's often less proggy than the later albums. But not in a bad way. As long as you're not expecting the sort of convoluted medieval prog rock of the classic period albums there's a lot to like about these early recordings (the drum solo wasn't the best idea, but it was the early 70's...) Also, oldest brother Phil Shulman is most involved on these early albums, so you hear his singing and instrumental contributions more than on later albums. He starts fading away starting with Three Friends. For something great but different from this album, check out "Isn't It Quiet and Cold?" (An awesome video was made for it.)

*The Power and The Glory* and *Three Friends* are the albums that definitely should be full-album-reactions, and even *Acquiring the Taste* would work better this way actually.
