  • WOW! What a frickin' track dude. The upbeat tempo and crazy sounds just ROCK... I kinda still am trying to wrap my head around half the stuff they were doing. Such a great find.

my favorite song by gentle giant! Probably because, regardless of the many parts and breaks, it's just a bit more rocky. I like Gentle Giant in general, but this song puts me in a good mood in any situation.

Magma has some of the best drumming ever. Christian Vander is up there with the likes of Morgan Ågren, Tomas Haake or Billy Cobham. Insane vocalist as well, and Magma had all of the best french bassists and keyboarders of the time as well. Magma is an amazing band, totally original and I have never heard a band that masters dynamics and buildup in their composition to such an extent. De futura is the definite zeuhl piece IMO and the best introduction to it must be Udu Wudu as an album, MDK, K.A are possibly their most consistent, and of course "Live"

This album is FIRE, one of my all time faves. You've already heard the two big ones but you should do the rest, "Experience" is a dear favorite, the first part got stuck inmy head for like an entire month, SOOO addicting.
Great talk about dark and positive sounding music, 100% true, my experience has been the same, still love the darker stuff and occassionally even listen to it, but generally only gravitate towards the more positive sounding stuff nowadays.

So glad you are reacting to,and fully enjoying the old classic prog & rock, bro! The plain & simple fact is that--music was happier back then because people making it had a better overall outlook on life in general. Things were more positive back then,OR-- folks just were able to deal with bad stuff in a mature way. In short--they had a stronger belief system through faith (still) than in today's world. Alot harder for folks to achieve that these days,but--it's still there as always. We simply need to find it and embrace it. Enjoying your reacts,guy--keep up the great work and don't forget to check into Neal Morse's work. His writing is based/influenced by all the greats..Genesis,yes,ELP,Kansas,Rush,Gentle Giant, and even later Beatles vibes. He will astonish you..hands down! Regards, T

Not really any Mellotron on this one. In general - except for a couple of their early albums -- Gentle Giant avoided the Mellotron (probably because they were famously nightmares to tour with). Kerry Minnear instead mostly played the Hammond organ, the Clavinet, and the Moog synthesizer (besides viola, xylophone, recorder and percussion.) But you can make the Hammond sound like a lot of other things with just a bit of studio effects. Vangelis was famous for making his Hammond sound like a string synthesizer long before they existed.

Another great prog band albeit massively underrated though. You have to 'graduate' musical boundary wise, to understand what these chaps were about . (I certainly feel I had to myself). What was amazing, was how they switched roles playing about through pretty much all the instruments on stage during a live show. I think they were quite unique and remarkable in that respect. Ps its great to see a young dude, experience this for himself and address your emotions positively, to me that means this music is doing you some good which, is what it's all about. Be well dear chap.

I think Gentle Giant would get a little too redundant because they truly were achieving a feat of proficiency considering how primitive was the recording. One could purchase mono albums of them as stereo was still new.
They chose the name Gentle Giant because they would transition back and forth from quiet soft gentle parts to loud hard rough parts.

re: your reaction, positive / negative, dark / light etc... have you dug into the past? I dig the dark stuff, and I find things like John Dowland's Lachrimae, Flow My Teares, etc., and some of Purcell's darker bits e.g. Dido's Lament, and Funeral Sentences, very therapeutic. understood if sometimes you just need something a bit sunnier. no shame in a bit of ELO. :-)
