The song they play directly after this in the concert is even more insane: it's called On Reflection and begins with the band acting as a chamber orchestra. Gentle Giant is amazing, amazing music.

Congratulations! You have joined the VERY few people who have reacted to GG. I have been listening to them since the mid 70s and what I like about them is the constant changes during their songs. At the time I had not heard anything like what they were doing. Never knowing what direction a song would take and how it would get there. If you react to any more, I suggest In a Glass House. Excellent reaction.👍

For another examples of 'instrument swapping' in a live performance, to add to the above cited On Reflection, there's also on youtube a 1975 version of The Advent of Paniurge at the Long Beach Arena, where the band for a while becomes sort of a wind section. And I Lost My Head, from 1976's album Interview, which followed Free Hand. Both terrific.

I hear Zappa, Yes, Genesis, and others! 70's art fusion, with their own rules 💯💪🎶

If I remember right, they had changed their record label back then - that´s what the title "Free hand" really was about. Musically, so to speak.
Although their my favorite band almost since I´d first heard them one has to admit, their music is somewhat unusual and that may disturb some people. It´s definitely not easy-listening. All songs differ much from another and it´s hard to suggest just one of their many great tunes.
The "swapping" one in this live performance is "On Reflection" - or "Funny Ways" with a superb vibraphone solo.

The studio version of this song doesn't have the "solo" sections but instead it has a long written part in the middle that they couldn't play live. BTW I also recommend you hear the studio version of On Reflection because it's very different to the live version.
