  • It's the little decisions we make and influences of history along the way that determine who we are, what we do and what we create.
For this owner of a custom 1974 Honda CB360 cafe racer / flattracker, incorporating various elements from his own dirt bike and family history of speedway racing resulted in a build of the perfect ride.

This is what motorcycling should be like. Its not about size or power, it is not about the latest horsepower figures, its the relationship between man and machine. Its about the minimalism of this form of transport, the economy and practacality. These attributes are of course combined with enjoyment and the sense of freedom. The man's personality is extended into his machine while still retaining the most ecologically acceptable form of motorised transport.

Watching this makes me die a little inside. I had to sell my first bike and my second due to financial woes. Both were piles of parts I got for $800 and spend the winter putting together, turning into a living, breathing machine.
Getting rid of them was a massive mistake, I just couldn't afford to keep either of them.
One day though, I'll be back in the market for another $800 pile of parts to keep myself busy over the fall/winter.

Dr., I was just this close to buy a customized cafe racer BMW with a real german army eagle welded to the tank by the grandfather of the owner, who had fought in the WW2; that was in 2001. I ask him to wait for a few days while I collected the money. It was not just the bike. It was about 3 generations using that 1970 bike, in the USA, where it was customized and tuned up in California by the guy who made the jump over the fence in "the great escape".
When I called, after 4 days, he told me that he could not let that bike get out of their home.
      I respected that.

This film works on so many levels. As a motorsport and bike guy, it pure joy. As a biographical piece, terrific. And as just filmmaking, hats off on the direction, music, color grade and editing. Really nice job!

I'm liking the videos. Brings up a lot of nostalgia people have along with great passion for bikes of all types. In fact I bought a cl 450 project bike because of some old pictures of my father on one back in the 60's or early 70's. He went riding the dragons tail in Tennessee and now I live in NC not very far from there. He's gone now but I'm going to get the same pictures of me on my cl 450 when the project is done.

Liked your comment "best enjoyment I've had on any motorbike I've had in my life". That's exactly how I feel abut them, they are just great fun.
I've worked in various motorcycle dealerships and probably ridden thousands of different bikes. CB360 is old and slow but 'different' enough. It's probably on par with 500cc Triumph, small, light, fun

Nice strip down CB, I have to echo Dr Campbell, I am in fact a believer that everyone had a bike that is the right size for them, I've spent most of my riding life on 250's, mostly the same one or model at least as I have two, even though I have bigger bikes although nothing beyond a middleweight it's still the 250's that I ride the most. Even stripped down though personal preference would mean a bigger headlight than on this, I just like big headlights, so much better for riding home through snowstorms and the like.

Everytime I hear a CB360 Honda it's like seeing a black 1966 Chevelle or 1968 Dodge Challenger going down the street. You can't get enough of it, and it's the most surreal and heavenly experience. There is a certain unique sound that the CB360 has, which is unique only to that bike. Maybe it's the valve timing, and cam profile. But it has a really vicious rasp to it that is the best sound I've ever heard from a parallel twin.

    • @stonewolf9459
      @stonewolf9459 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Mine has turnouts riveted to the header pipes and sounds even better still.
on one trip through the Ouachita mountains, I had a coil start to go bad, so one cylinder was dropping in and out.
every time the second cylinder would kick back in, that sound of it going from half bogged to springing to life was just the best.

I have owned many bikes, I had an extreme set of circumstances separate me from ALL of my motorcycles, and I couldn't handle not being on 2 wheels.
I didn't have any money, but my dad had an old cb360 in boxes in the back of his shed that I had given him years ago, because he had told me how much he loved cb360s and i found it cheap.
He knowing that I was missing 2 wheels and that he would never build anything from the piles of parts gave me 3 boxes, 2 wheels, and a frame.
eventually I hob cobbled together this monstrosity out of whatever parts I could find. over sized shocks, dirt tires, and homemade exhaust, and even if it is the slowest, it is absolutely the most fun bike I have ever owned. as I thrash it, I find the weak points, and make them better. now shes nearly unstoppable over any terrain.
now I'm in a much better place, and I can afford to use whatever parts I want, but I've grown to love the mismatched mess, and shes proven herself to be tough and reliable as is.
I did give her to my dad after i could afford a nicer 1100 sabre, but eventually traded him the nicer one because I wanted the little 360 back.

I like the style of his bike. Reminds me of the old1973 Kawasaki Enduros for on and off road. Not sure that having no front fender and not much rear fender is such a good idea in the rain, especially through mud puddles. The old upright twins are full on win though. I think they made the same basic engine up until the early 2000s in the Honda Rebel.

It is one thing to mod a old Honda bike just for the looks . It is a totally another thing to mod an old Honda the way you like it and ride the dam thing and keep it . There are a lot of these punks would mod a bike to look like a flat tracker but once it is done and rode around some on the streets they end up not liking it and try to sell it . For that goes it would be really hard to sell . There are some reasons why that is . The main one is the construction of the build . If it was done properly and a well suited welder and a well suited welding machine . A lot of people think they know how to weld and they cant . They end up welding way to hot or way to cold . Then they tend to cover smooth out those mistakes with JB weld or worse bondo . Then most people are not artist or designers . Yes they have a picture in their tiny brains with what they only love . There is where the problem lays and when the finished results comes out so wrong . Then there are guys like my self that likes to keep things as they was intended to be . I am really strong on that and that is OK . But these old bikes are getting really hard to find in good stock running shape . Finding one that just completely destroyed and having to do everything to get it back if that could be done . But if a person cant and start building from the ground up with the only thing good is the frame then I think that is the only way to go with a build like yours or for anyone else . But taking a complete running stock bike in nice shape and doing this to it is completely wrong . There was a lot of good old bikes ended it's poor like just because of stupid idiots . A bike is a reflection of your self and if a person cant fully understand them selves because of Drugs or just out of touch of them selves the result would be that a person ends up with a mess . It is how we see things in our heads . So little minds that comply this and put in on paper first then with the subject it self and making it into art . Your bike is a completely YOU it looks like you . I am saying this in a good way . But that baseball cap have to go dude . It is not you with it on . Maybe just showing your hair kind of messed up look . Want to be free and wild right . But anyway I do like your bike and it just fit you just fine . A good understanding of your self . Thanks

Wow, my neighbor gave me his Honda CB 360 , it has been sitting in his garage since 1983 ! It's in ever good shape. I would love to turn it into a cafe racer like yours . Can you share where you got the handle bars , kick start pedal, and speedometer , etc.. Thanks
