This conversation was food for my soul. I've been down with the both of them since day 1 at ESPN. I am so glad they finally had this conversation for us to hear. I definitely understand where Michael is coming from, on needing to find his purpose before he could look back at his time at ESPN.

I relate to everything that brother Mike is talking about. I used to be a producer for Black entertainment television BET, I co-created Spring Bling. I used to produce Rap City tha Bassment. There are so many rappers that we see today that I was a visual hand behind but I made the mistake of standing up in 2006 about sexual harassment. It happened to me and I spoke up about it happening to Black women in Entertainment, and I was blacklisted so fast and so hard by BET. I never had a moment to end my career there to correct way and it bothered me for years. I absolutely had to come to grips with that reality that I did NOT lose, I stood up for a cause that was bigger than me and yes, way before the Me Too movement. I spoke about what women were going through in the music & entertainment industry back in 2005 and 2006 in particularly with black women were going through an entertainment industry. The blacklist hurt, thinking I lost hurt...until I realized I ain't lose a damn thing... I def feel their pain & redemption.

I can relate. I received a degree in Computer Science and ended up getting a "temporary" security job that lasted around 8 years because I became depressed and complacent. Finally shit hit the fan in that toxic environment and I got removed from the site at which I worked.
Sounds bad, but a major weight was lifted off of my shoulders and I no longer had to deal with the situation, which allowed me to focus on getting my foot in the door of the career I wanted. I am now a software engineer.
At the time I got removed, I was pretty upset about how it happened, but I quickly realized that God doesn't care about your ego/pride. If you have faith in Him, He will get you to your destination one way or another.

So "getting fired...", as you frame it, was an opportunity for them to grow, thus my comment, of which you clearly missed. If you think their "failure" hasn't put them in a better place mentally, professionally or financially, then you are just looking to hate on them buddy. Grown folk understand that sometimes you have to go low to get high, but I think you haven't reached that part of life to appreciate the journey. Enjoy your ride, grace and peace.

Whenever I get to hear Jemele and Michael's telling of how they left ESPN, I'll take advantage of it.
I had my own opinion on why they've both left. Watching this video, I wasn't far off. There was research l had for my questions.
What I got is so much better than having my curiosity satisfied. To hear from them both that they've moved on. I'm especially happy to hear Michael say he's no longer in that toxic work environment.
There's so much sanity in the realization that ESPN won't apologize or change.
Too many times have good people tried to bang their heads against a brick wall.
I'm not watching ESPN anymore. And I don't miss it at all. Because I can watch Jemele and Michael on their own media. Where they are happy and healthy with what they're doing.

Often times people try to hold open a door that God is closing; it happened to me. I was released from a job with these words on a piece of paper: “Our production no longer warrants your position.” I had been at that company for 9 years at which I held and prospered in multiple positions. Then they said, “... and there is nothing else for you here.” It hurt at the time, but I eventually came to realize that there were greater things that God had for me. Those final words firmly closed that chapter of my life so that I could be about His business. Michael you are 100% right, it was a win for Jemele.

I am so glad they had this conversation, awakening for us all who supported them through al the BS. I was not really a sports fan until Jemele and Michael. I loved the witty reparte between them on the show and they not only had me really look at and think about basketball but beyond that the landscape of sports, sports reporting and representation in sports. They are advocates for us all and that was what captured me about them in particular. Jemele demonstrated that there is no separation of what she does for a living before the camera and what she believes in, what's important to her and Mike did the same. They are thriving now and I am personally so grateful for that!

    1. His and Hers was my favorite show, even over First Take. 2. The reason it's so painful is because as black people we always end up in this situation. We work twice as hard to get, half of what we deserve with the constant fear that the rug could be pulled from under us.
It's just sad that regardless of the level you reach, the story is still the same. I'm happy for Jemele and happy that Michael was able to get through this TRAUMATIC experience. People have no idea the amount of trauma our culture takes on and yet still smiles, laughs and perseveres.

Numbers Never Lie was where it started, His and Hers was more deep bc they talked about topics unrelated to sports, so that made that show the shit! I remember the last few episodes of His and hers and they looked so sad bc they were leaving the show but tried to keep us, the viewers, happy by saying the 6ix was going to be just as good....I knew they were lying 😓😢🤧
