I never really understood the drums until I began listening to Ginger. The man tells a story with all four limbs. Ginger has also turned me on to his influences; Max Roach, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones etc. Kids today who are interested in the drums should really take a lesson or two for the old masters.
Ginger the master of subtle powerful modulation. Some of this some of that, a little of this and more of that mixing it altogether presenting an ear candy casserole of meat, veggies, energy ear food to fit in a brain. Sound, hits, tempos in a sea of intrigue. His sound like his life unlimited energy, variation and non compliance. "GET THAT WASP OFF MY SANDWICH"!
Always dug cream since I was a teenager...ginger baker in particular....just ran across this. Damn amazing...Keith moon was good, but damn. Ginger was really the man.
Bonham did say that (paraphrase) Baker and him were the only true drummers in rock. Ginger is right, Bonham really couldn't swing all that well and for the few Zep songs that could have swung (the end of "The Ocean" example, it was more Jonesy than Bonham doing the swinging.... but that's what made Zeppelin great and I don't think John (or Moony for that matter) were too interested in swinging to begin with.
This was during his "I've given up playing two bass drums" phase, that lasted a few years. I tried to see this band - but my parents wouldn't let me go as they were playing a local venue with a terrible reputation for drugs and violence. A saw him just a year or so later, by which time I had turned 18 and gone to college, so they couldn't stop me :) Unfortunately he was by then touring with Hawkwind - which just wasn't in the same class at all... the drumming was still something incredible, though.
His being so dour doesn't take away his influence. I'd have been scared to sit next to him. Took me a long time to really recognize how he completely drove Cream's sound with his peculiar "clock" giving those tunes the swirl and stutter unique to him. It's as if he's re-creating the songs arrangement from the drum chair. Maybe it took a monster to take drums to that new place?
I love his drumming. His incorporating African tone and patterns into jazz/ rock drumming was truly great and unique. However, dour doesn't describe him. He was an out and out bastard.. watch Beware of Mr. Baker, which is quite accurate
Amazing drummer, and concert overall. One little mistake i noticed did he said "that's alright" was written by Carl Perkins?, i'm fairly sure was Arthur Crudup.
The one who say that this guy is a bad drummer are just stupid or jaleous..do you think Eric Clapton or Jack Bruce play with him if he was a bad musician? He a musician before to be a drummer.
Frenetic almost frantic and cluttered at times....losing all sense of dynamic range.... but overall a wonder to see Mr Baker's self control, subtelty and quiet strength in such a tightly structured simple framework.... a joy to watch. Thank you so much for posting this!!
@@jeffreymalack3723 Did he say anything about the sound or if he liked them or not? I know he was a very opinionated SOB and I swear I saw him talking about drums once and he said drums should be made from wood and that they should be made in America lol.
Hi Steve....it was a paid endorsement from Ludwig, but I seem to recall the paragraph at the bottom of the page where he talked about their durability.
@@marceibel1131 bonham sucks and couldn t repeat even half of this solo. If you think at reverse is clear that you never seen a drumkit in your life or you cant write or read music
Ginger was an incredible drummer, but this sounds a little too overdone to my ears. A simple rockabilly song can only stretch so far into jazz before it collapses.
Chkout that smile just b4 end of his solo. Brought a tear to me eye. Rest In Peace Mr. Baker. Respectfully... U were 1 m-fer.
Rest in peace, my Ginger. Thank you for so much inspiration. Thank you for all.
GOAT GENIUS

The man was a MONSTER on the kit!!!
Jim Cushman Peter Baker drum god
DEMONIC
You know he’s still alive right
Man he is in another dimension.
Another Great drum solo from Mr Baker. R.I.P Ginger.
For me …> best Drummer ever ! Rest in Peace, Ginger ! -- Eckhard B. from D --
Marvelous master here.

Baker claims, that if they were still alive, Bohnam, and Moon would single out Baker as the very best.
I don't dougbt it.

@@maximilliancunningham6091 How could he speak so well of HIMSELF???
ThE answer was for Adlin :+)
@@pabloperez4063 cause he can! He's Ginger Baker.
Damn this whole band is straight up rocking !!!! They all are magnificent musicians , I am sure Ginger felt at home here.
One of his best solos!!!
The greatest!
Great solo from Ginger Nice mix of the Toad and African rhythms Gingers use of poly rhythm is unprecidented
a monster trex behind the drumms
great solo LUV ginger's playing.
Ginger on FIRE!

Damn what a jam! Have listened to the live Energy album (from the Marquee Club) but had not seen/heard this one. Thanks for sharing.
Holy fucking shit! How does this not have many more views? Probably the best drumming I've heard in my entire lifetime.
Great drumming, but to see the best of all time, youtube "buddy rich drum solo", and go to heaven.
Super human, rhythmic combinations, and sounds like about 3 very good players,
flat out, going as hard and fast as they can.

all albums
No one sounds like Ginger. I hear alot of Max Roach in his solo. Ginger is just relentless with all of his 4 limbs in action.
You got that Michael. 🥁
This is the first time seeing him on a single bass drum kit, and you'd never know it.
Saw Ginger with Jack Bruce in 1989 and with Masters of Reality in 1990 incredible drummer to say the least.
Ginger is insane fucking amazing.
Mr Baker you will be my hero for ever!Repose en paix!
wow...Ginger is strong here
Il numero uno!
Wow!
Ginger is FANTASTIC, BUT IS THE ENTIRE GROUP REALLY COMPOSED BY GREAT PROFESSIONISTS
One of Ginger's best solos
Your right but I think toad was his best solo ever
It was amazing, for sure. Too bad he was so intent on self destruction and alienating everyone he worked with.

Charlie X I own a copy. There's no getting round it, he was more than dour.

I must revisit G B's Airforce!!
And some say Ginger is a bad drummer!his a master!
Some...Who?!
If they say that...then they're not drummers!!!
big ginger fan. not how fast you play.. its what you say. I can get over buddy.
Exactly ! I've never heard any player who could seriously rival Bakers rythmic skills.
Same with any instrument. :)

The kit seems to be an acrylic kit. I didn't think Ginger ever played acrylic drums.
Yes, he played a Ludwig vistalite set during this period. I saw a full page ad in Melody Maker with him posing in front of his new kit.

Baker my favourite drummer. But was the bass player called up to fill in for someone else without notice? Lol
The superiority of ginger litterally kill john bonham😂
Silly comment. Bonham died from choking on his own vomit, not from drummer-envy.

Arthur Crudup - That's All Right (original version)
It don't mean a thing if it aint got ginger
Bonham solid tech. speed plus power. moon hit anything in site sloppy as fuck. Ginger well rounded he's best!
I love this. But what is on top of Baker's hi-hat? It's not a tambourine idk what instrument it is
Millennial Monty it’s bells or something
9:00 for the bassists out there.
Yeah - Mr. Baker. His repetitions. Remember the Art Blakey battle - not to his advantage; Blakey could only grin.
Written by Arthur Crudup.
Is that an Alembic guitar? 2:50
Ginger kept trying to bring the band in from the bass solo seems like the band was like umm no
Something is driving ginger with his drumming not normal at all.
Turbo charged fo sho
Natural talent -- that is, talent received before he was
even born. All he had to do (and did do) was hone it! 😉
That's alright mama was written by Arthur Crudup, not Carl Perkins. It was performed by Elvis Presley.
John Mizzarolli end up giving guitar lessons in his own house.....sad

LOL
back in the day Keith Moon Ginger Baker where the best no this little gal named s i n a she given both of the Run for the money
UM BA HA HA HA ...PENIS ENVIOUS?
SIMP
Possiblt the most annoying camera work during a drum solo ever devised.
To fast
I thought the same but the pitch is spot on.
you're too slow.
Ugh.. they sure knew how to kill a great song: lousy singer, overplaying by everybody.
Absolutely sucks. Muddy as all hell. Everybody stepping on each other and a horrible song arrangement. An embarrassment. These guys were deluded.
Another fucking expert music critic, like bollocks, why don't you post what you can do twat!
It’s why it’s called a ‘Jam’
This was a phase Ginger went through right when he first decided to get back into drums after giving it up, he was just experimenting
bad taste and apologies. pearls before swine.
