    This is the only time you would see Baker smile - when immersed in pure jazz. More than just a spectacular polyrhythmic virtuoso, Baker could swing. And be as delicate as any jazz drummer.

    Kudos to G.B. for getting Frisell and Haden together in his group. I knew about Frisell's recordings with Eberhard Weber, Dave Holland , Ron Carter, and Marc Johnson, and a lot of others but had no idea he played with the great Charlie Haden until a couple of years ago. Very happy to have the G.B. Trio's 2 CDs. Great music and I appreciate, especially in this video, how generous Baker is giving them time to do their thing. And, yes, Frisell is an acquired taste but he's every bit as famous in the jazz world as that Cream guitar player is in the rock world.

    A lot of garbage in these comments. That head of steam at 37 minutes shows you something; Ginger wasn't a conventional jazz drummer. But there was never a jazz drummer who could rip with power like that except maybe Tony Williams. He was his own man. Too bad for many he wasn't somebody else. He was incapable of being anybody else. God bless that man.

    Nice! Never heard this trio. Frisell sounds great here - love the tones and atmospheres. Reminds me of the Pat Metheny Trio of 99-00. Ginger is a bit hamhanded as jazz drummers go but that might just be the giant rock drum sizes of that kit. I wonder how much rehearsal the group had, given they have charts.

    • @UnitedElectric

      Ginger was like Paul Motian. A universe of sound and texture all by himself. Un fucking touchable. This trio was unreal.

      well, first. those kicks are smaller than the ones Baker saw Sam Woodyard using with Ellington which gave him and Moon the idea for the double-kick-drum. Which brings up the question of just what jazz do you have in mind? or is it that you're expecting brushes and he's using sticks?

    • @yttreblemaker
      @yttreblemaker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason behind Baker's massive set wasn't for pure show. He was all about tone colour and dynamics. The more equipment, the greater the variety of sound, and none of it had to be hard or loud. Think along the lines of Neil Peart. His set was huge, but he more of a percussionist. Baker uses all of his set in a very communicative manner.

    • @yttreblemaker

      @Kapālin So the story goes, if I remember correctly, Baker and Keith Moon were watching a jazz concert, maybe Louia Bellson with Ellington, and Baker suggested that they could use the double bass setup for their own bands. Moon rushed out and immediately bought a second bass drum while Baker ordered his made to his specifications. So, while Bellson came up with the original idea, Moon and Baker made this popular for rock. Baker's use of the two drums in this concert is more what he had in mind at the time - for more tone colour rather than just for more power.

    Creams founder and all time great musician/ drummer Mr.Baker. Both Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce together were to me the absolute best three piece trio of the 1960s period. The Jimi Hendrix experience was fantastic live but Clapton, Baker and Bruce were far better individually than the Hendrix, Mitchell and Redding. The Jimi Hendrix experience was taken from Creams influence and large following in England and America.Ginger Bakers musical influence as a drummer was legendary along with Jack Bruces monster bass playing and of course Eric Clapton speaks for himself. Cream was the first super Rock trio of the 1960s.

      Clapton better than HENDRIX?As much as i like Eric he can't approach the genius of the great Jimi!There's rock before Hendrix and after him!He changed the way of playing electric guitar!And the songs he composed are far better than any song of Clapton!They still sound "modern" after 50 years!

      Absolutely agree Pierre. Hendrix was far above Clapton, Mitchell was a great jazz rock drummer and could hold his own with Baker. However I agree Jack Bruce was far above Noel Redding. In fact it was Jack Bruce who really made Cream the band it was. The JH Experience was the greatest rock, blues, jazz, pop, funk exploratory trio ever.

    I'm severly underwhelmed. Baker's accents and fills are so random and out of place they sound like mistakes. It's like he's not even listening to what the others are playing. To be frank, this is not a very good band overall.
    Edit: I noticed something I hadn't seen before. At one point, I saw Charlie Haden warm up his hands by breathing in them. That suggests it's cold on stage. That might not be a problem for a drummer, but for a string player, that is devastating to the performance. No wonder they don't sound good. They should have had heaters close to them to warm them up.
