Changing pads always change the sound. The headphones are tuned with the pads they're shipped with. People have measured sound changes with different pads.
GadgetryTech mentioned that it does but it is damn near close to the original. All you have to do if you already got a custom EQ is to lower the 32hz frequency by -2dB and the 500hz by -2dB and you are pretty much set.
Owned Audeze Maxwell since May, upgraded from Penrose. Both excellent. Your 100% right. Amazing, Heavy, stock ear pads okay. I have burson amp, Phillips Fidelio. The Maxwell's excellent substitute, if i don't want wired. I m gaming in a living room, pc is on the other side. Audio quality is amazing and it gets loud. Makes sense why only 2 points to adjust and a thick leather band. They are heavy and a suspension band would not hold them
I received my pads the other day. One thing I'd like to point out is since these are a cooling gel pad, they are VERY heavy. They add 100 grams to an already 500 gram headset. I'd like to see a non-cooling gel, all sport material version that is much lighter.
True. Also, some how one of them got a small leak while in my bag. The gel got into my right headphone and shorted it out or something. Either way, headset is fkd and were too damn heavy. Just need Audeze to release cloth ones for hot summer days
Did you check out Dekoni? They been in the game alot longer and generally make much higher quality stuff, usually in a few different materials to choose from. I have 1 set of wicked cushions and about 5 headphones with dekoni pads on them by now, theres no (afaik) cooling gel and such, but they are generally alot better made.
@@kvernesdotten Yeah, I have Dekoni pads in my collection as well. Last I checked, they have them for the Mobius & Penrose. But nothing for the Maxwell yet. After some time has past, I think I'm starting to get used to the weight. it's not as bothersome as it used to be.
The wicked cushion adds enough weight that if my move my head forward or lean forward to pick something off the ground, the headsets start sliding off. This still happens with stock pads but less. The Maxwells definitely sound very good but it's heavy as hell which means it slides off and is less comfortable. It has a good clamp force on my head, it's clamping hard enough to give me a tension headache. But the WC pads are more slippery than the stock pads. Even the stock pads slip off even though it is less. This is because this thing is heavy... If you value sound quality greatly and don't move your head as often then these are ok. But if you are going to wear this 8+ hours, you may not be happy. These things are heavy and may cause fatigue, plus they don't stay on if you are going to pick stuff off the floor etc.
Man i cant wait to get these, should be here in 7 days. Those stock pads just trap heat. I like to hop on after i shower as well, and find i can't use my Maxwell's for 30 minutes until my hair and ears are totally dry. Im a dude, I'm not using my wife's hairdryer so i can game... At least not anymore....
Lmao I’ve had the Maxwells for a couple weeks now and I’ve gone 8 hour game sessions without any discomfort from the headset. I’ve seen many a post ranting about how the stock pads are heat traps, but I haven’t run into that (yet I guess).
Owned these for a while and I always go back to my razer. They are so comfy. Nothing touches them.... period..... just bought the 2023 version and omg, im back in love ❤
This cooling gel is horrible. Trust me your ears just get so hot after ten minutes of use and it traps heat even worse. Plus it will change the sound as your ears are pulled away from the driver. Id only get these if my original ones are damaged otherwise leave em stock.
You can sure as hell bet i ordered the wicked cushions. 🔥 Cannot wait to receive them! Im so happy these headphones are becoming popular. Theyre a stellar product
Hey Techne, did you have any issues with these headphones QC? I read all over the internet about issues with these dying in one ear even on day one. That is the only reason I have not pulled the trigger. Any knowledge on this would be greatly appreciated!
I ordered these now because my right ear is often touching the driver of the headset and that makes them quite uncomfortable for long gaming sessions. It's by far not as bad as it was when i tried the steelseries nova pro, but it's still quite noticeable. I hope the wicked cushions will fix this issue for me, but still keep the same amazing sound which they got. Your Video makes me optimistic tho that i'll stay similarly good. Thank you for the Video! 👍
I have my Maxwell for a week now. Amazing sound and quality, but it's incredibly uncomfortable after just an hour of usage too. This headset is heavy and no matter how I readjust my strap, or even taking it off, it will still hurt my head. Definitely need some cushion updrages to be enjoyable in the long run.
Those parts on the WC earpads that go on the side of your head, what's the material on those? Are they cloth-like in the sense that they'll be absorbing sweat and oils and what not, and eventually will get smelly? If so, can you just clean them and how? Or do you just outright replace them?
cant understand why this video has so many dislikes... if you dont like the product its ok but dont blame the reviewer. This is a great review! Keep up the good work @The Techne
I would assume because the review feels very biased. Strengths are just praised to high heavens, and the very legitimate downsides are just swept under a rug.
It's because as a few commenters have mentioned - he skirts over the cons - Cooling Gen pads are only cool for a period and then absorb the heat over time and retain it for longer. They are also heavier and be more of a harder, solid mass with the clamping pressure against the head (From user reviews). In-short, Cooling gel is not effective for warmer climates, hotter/"Spicier" conditions. Mesh ones, Silk ones - earpads that breathe are usually better for those conditions and also sit lighter on the head, tend to be better or least worst solutions there. Otherwise, the stock ones are perfectly fine IMHO, though some have reported they can be a little shallow, so some can feel drivers - so some deeper Sheepskin or lambskin replacements could be the-go?
I love wicked cushions, I got a set for my mobius and then two days later my mobius died lol but I enjoyed the pads for those two days. will definitely get these for the maxwells
Love your videos Mr Techne. I just bought the Penrose, Stealth Pro & Maxwell. I kept the Maxwell"s I'll have my wicked cushions tomorrow'. Great job by you and Gadgetry tech. You guys just nail your reviews! PS. Evertime you say stinkin, I'm always waiting for you to slip up with the F word lol Thank you for your hard work!
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY ! had a 3D print company make me some spacers while i'm waiting for the wicked cushions. been 3 long months. instant buyer from germany here. btw thx for recommending the maxwells.
The wicked cushions definitely feel cooler, but the increased size also increased the clamping pressure, after a couple weeks, I had to revert, maybe I’ll try again in the future. Another note, if you’re sensitive to smell, they also have an odor, seems to have gotten less, but it’s still there
I found the more clamp and the thicker headband with the replacement headband as well makes them stay on my head better. I found if i walked around with them on or even just tilted my head too much they'd slide off my head with the defaults but no longer with the wikkid cushion and strap.
I bought a pair, went back and fourth with gaming and music and they dramatically change the sound of the headphones. I didn’t find them that comfy and they made it sound worse imo. The nice part was they gave me my money back and I didn’t have to return the pads.
What are your thoughts for music listening? I kind of still prefer my penrose for music for some reason, just feels more rich or something. Same with story games like God of war, idk but something about the Penrose sound, just feels more in your face than the maxwell. Wondering if just me..
@@seifbuys they are definitely two different sounds and I think it comes down to personal preference, with the maxwells you have a great sound and newer tech and on the penrose you also have great sounds but in overall quality in build and the mic and Bluetooth the penrose just don’t come close for me. That being said I do agree tho that the penrose has a better sound for gaming but overall maxwells take the cake
Tried them with the leather cushions for a few hours and yeah, they're too hot and create a sort of... vacuum? I don't know. I don't see why so many choose to put leather on their headsets. Went back to my DT 990 pro
Just tried it - that little bit of depth is not critical but really pleasant my ears (in stock pads I touch the grill lightly). Also I'm lucky to have such a size of a head that with thicker pads it fits even better than stock. BUT!!! For me new pads did change the sound significantly and in a wrong way. I mean it messed it up to a point where you could just buy something 4 times cheaper and 2 times lighter than Maxwell if such changes are ok. It just drops from "great for music" tier to "ok for daily media consumption and gaming" tier. May be some insulation problem with my particular skull or donno. Just keep in mind that it is possible. Reddit also says I'm not alone with such experience.
Awesome video, subscribed! I am glad I saw this since my ears slightly push against the drivers, I'm sure since these are a tad thicker I will have my ears just gently pushed back for more confort
I ordered mine from the Audeze website on April 20th, they did send me an email stating that my order should ship in June, but they didn't say early June or late June!

1:23 It's not for vibration, a lot of closed backs when you don't have a tight-fitting on the pads to the headphones you get quite a big of a bass drop off for a reviewer you really are a layman 😃
Hey Techne. I just got the maxwell headset. I'm having a bit of an issue with the game/chat mix wheel. I know how this works cause I have sony 3d headset with the same feature. When I scroll down towards the headsetsymbol, I know its suppose to bring up the volume for chat with friends and lower the game sound since I'm rolling away from the game. Instead both game and chat increase volume together. Is this happening to you or do I need to set it up differently? Your assistance would be appreciated.
My PC does not support USB-C. Will the sound quality be affected negatively if I connect the dongle to an included usb adapter and use my PCs USB 3.0 instead?
Hey there, how you doing Techne. Love your videos man, really do! Bought the Penrose, and did the upgrade for the Maxwell. Want to know, if you have any upgrades on the software for the Audeze Maxwell. Do you have news on that?? Thank you for your videos, keep it up! love them! Hugs from Brazil!!
Still waiting for the xbox version review :) i have a ps5 and a pc so i wanna know if using the PC with the xbox version is better than the ps5 version becos i saw on the website that dolby surround sound on PC is only available on the Xbox version and not on the PS5 version.. Love the vids btw!!
again, I just purchased Maxwell yesterday (I was waiting for months) and your video is here for even better performance (same happened with penrose) thank you :) :)
I would recommend against changing the ear pads as it will 100% change the overall sound profile. These headphones are professionally tuned by one of the best companies in the industry, so it’s best not to mess with the sound. This guy is sponsored by this ear pads company, that’s why he’s suggesting it. Don’t do it!
Shocker. Thats not a bad thing at all, especially with these headphones thats a hilarious concern. They come with an eq and support dtsx dolby atmos etc, audeze wants you to play around with the sound. The sound out of the box isnt even that good for gaming, its more of a jack of all trades tune lol. Throw jeans pads on that sucker if you feel like it.
Came here to say this. Haha Wc's add a little more bass but negligible. Slightly added a fraction more to the v depth? But still negligible. Where as some other versions do in fact more drastically change the sound Sig. @@proxyhx2075
Thinking about getting these. How's the sound isolation? I have the Sennheiser G4ME One headphones now and love them, but its too distracting trying to play anything while my girlfriend is watching TV in the background.
My wife walks into the room and will be talking to me and I don't hear her until she taps me on the shoulder. That being said, not sure if they'd drown out a TV or not.
They should be the same the only thing is you have to buy the Dolby License to get Dolby Atmos on Windows with the PS5 version while the Xbox version comes with the license already. That is why the Xbox version costs more. But the license is like $15 i think so it's still cheaper to get the PS5 version and then buy the license for PC.
What’s up with the QC issues going around ? I am nervous these headphones are too frail especially the drivers. I’m seeing a lot of wrinkled drives and dying ear pieces
I’m having a hard time setting up this headset I’m my pc doesn’t have my headset as a sound option as if it not recognized but it’s working through the mix amp app on pc
I also have another tip - use a beta firmware that auto changes to DTS, Dolby, no spacial sound or what ever. It auto auto calculates the headsets via both magnetic left and right headsets. To know exactly, the size of head to perfectly deliver sound.. Also, if you allow the AI software with microphone and even video it calculates you over time to deliver the perfect sound
Still for beta testers only. Awaiting approval due to the magnetic charge going through brain. While no radiation, people with Intracranial aneurysm clips could displace them over time.. very rare indeed, but there is that legal risk
Anybody knows where i can find less thicker ones? The original is thick enough and makes my headband stretch even on the highest level and i get a tension on my head which makes them uncomfortable
Hey Techne do you have any idea why my maxwells are making a aluminum crinkling sound with i move my head or push the power button, it does this when its on and off.
Can anyone tell if its normal ( when wearing maxwell, with wicked cushions) If one ear feels more better shaped than the other one, in other words having one ear specifically the top portion of the ear slightly touching the foam screen against the speaker touching??
2 of my headset came from your review. one was h70 corsair from 4yrs ago and now my current headset this audeze maxwell. now that im using it im loving it really. i need help techne, when i switch my mic and i speak i can hear my own voice the only thing that i can do is to mute my microphone to stop hearing it, is there a way i can disable the feedback from my ears while using my mic its kinda annoying in my opinion @The Techne
They may be cool initially, but also of users online saying, and it makes sense, that over-time they build up the heat and retain it, making it even warmer. It's a known thing with cooling gel.
What are your Eq settings for the Maxwells? Do you use the built in EQ’s? I tried them but couldn’t match the precision with footsteps that I’d get with the Penrose at default. (Specifically for Halo Infinite).
I just got this head set man and I can’t hear directional footsteps anywhere bro the imaging is so bad idk what to do if I can fix it or just return it
I got the Maxwell's at launch. They do sound amazing. The imaging does lack a bit. I can hear footsteps, but unless I'm facing a specific direction I can't detect which direction they're coming from. Unless I'm somewhere with a side that nobody can come from, it's easy. But anything else I just hear them coming. Anything coming from behind, I hear them coming but generally I can't determine which direction though. Gadgetry Tech (I think that's right) had a vid up with EQ settings for COD, Apex and Fortnite I think it was. I use the COD one. Maybe I should try the other ones for COD too see if there's a difference.
Hey teche I hope you see this, I have a mediocre budget and am torn on what to get. The cloud II Arctis one for Xbox (I’m on Xbox) or even the arctis 3 or 5 but then I’m also a earbud guy and there are g pros which seem good and also blackshark 2. What would you recommend for mostly audio and footsteps in r6 ranked and mic quality. Any help in comments would be nice 👍
Just got the maxwells and man the imaging is so bad I can’t hear directional footsteps to save my life.. is there anything I can do to make this any better? Custom EQs some type of software? I tried Dolby and it didn’t help much. Thinking of returning these
I also got them and immediately was disappointed playing COD compared to my Penrose X experience. I downloaded the app and switched to footsteps and it plays much better! I haven’t updated the firmware yet too

Is it so bad that right after buying you need to replace something? ー。ー’’
Hey man, I have cables with the app now that’s it’s working better. But I barely use it, I love AUDEZE stock sound
Would anyone know how to convert these to more open back headphones?
Looking to improve the sound staging of them
Still waiting for the xbox version review :) i have a ps5 and a pc so i wanna know if using the PC with the xbox version is better than the ps5 version becos i saw on the website that dolby surround sound on PC is only available on the Xbox version and not on the PS5 version.. Love the vids btw!!
Just ordered them. Good looking out! 👍
I want to get the Maxwell for the newer tech. Is worth it? I’m coming from the older razer blackshark
Absolutely a game changer, the sound is phenomenal
again, I just purchased Maxwell yesterday (I was waiting for months) and your video is here for even better performance (same happened with penrose) thank you :) :)
Are these better than steel series? Are these the best for xbox? Wat u recommend? Thanks.
From what I heard, maxwells are way better
A white or grey would be dope..
I would recommend against changing the ear pads as it will 100% change the overall sound profile. These headphones are professionally tuned by one of the best companies in the industry, so it’s best not to mess with the sound. This guy is sponsored by this ear pads company, that’s why he’s suggesting it. Don’t do it!
bingo.
100%. I used wicked cushions with my Bose NC700 to replace the original cushions when they started to tear and sound quality DEFINITELY changed
Wrong, check GadgetryTech's analysis video about these pads.
They barely affect the sound profile.
Came here to say this. Haha
Wc's add a little more bass but negligible.
That's why I swapped from the pc38x open backs. I really like this headset.
@@J.R...... do you notice a big difference going from open back to closed back?
@@Dannzilla honestly the sound quality isn't that much different unless you're really being picky. I'd never go back after switching.
So if u only use them for pc which version is the better choice? The Xbox version or the ps5 version?
They should be the same the only thing is you have to buy the Dolby License to get Dolby Atmos on Windows with the PS5 version while the Xbox version comes with the license already. That is why the Xbox version costs more. But the license is like $15 i think so it's still cheaper to get the PS5 version and then buy the license for PC.
Cooling gel dont even keep them all the cool very long. Comfortable yes but barely noticeable in ‘cooling”
could i do simple chores around the house with these on? little bit of bending over, vaccuming, dishwasher and stuff without them falling off?
What’s up with the QC issues going around ? I am nervous these headphones are too frail especially the drivers. I’m seeing a lot of wrinkled drives and dying ear pieces
did you ever purchase them or find out any information about QC? Thats the only reason I have not pulled the trigger yet thanks!
@@steelzepplin2012 I have had them for a few months. Amazing headphones
Thanks for the headband tip 😊👍
I’m having a hard time setting up this headset I’m my pc doesn’t have my headset as a sound option as if it not recognized but it’s working through the mix amp app on pc
I have tried wc but didnt like, have now dekoni and they are much better
Thank you soo much for all your help is there anyway you could help us with the fps audio for hunt showdown please
You mean "added Weight" the WC adds more
What about UK?
I also have another tip - use a beta firmware that auto changes to DTS, Dolby, no spacial sound or what ever. It auto auto calculates the headsets via both magnetic left and right headsets. To know exactly, the size of head to perfectly deliver sound.. Also, if you allow the AI software with microphone and even video it calculates you over time to deliver the perfect sound
what software? audeze hq beta?
What beta firmware??
What software?
Still for beta testers only. Awaiting approval due to the magnetic charge going through brain. While no radiation, people with Intracranial aneurysm clips could displace them over time.. very rare indeed, but there is that legal risk
that said, the sound is by far the most immersive sound experience ever made
Anybody knows where i can find less thicker ones? The original is thick enough and makes my headband stretch even on the highest level and i get a tension on my head which makes them uncomfortable
Hey Techne do you have any idea why my maxwells are making a aluminum crinkling sound with i move my head or push the power button, it does this when its on and off.
The diaphragm is probably busted.
@@matthewfraser3826 that headset is ridiculously fragile, do not order them online, they always showed up damaged
Defean pads are bigger and much, much better.
4:43 that's what he said
earpads only really drastically change the sound of open back headphones
even comes down to what kind of stock pads are on already.
WC should do a cooling headband cushion for the Mobius
for all headsets
Can anyone tell if its normal ( when wearing maxwell, with wicked cushions) If one ear feels more better shaped than the other one, in other words having one ear specifically the top portion of the ear slightly touching the foam screen against the speaker touching??
I just got these but damn my old ass astro with mixamp sound way better more mids and all im disappointed or do i gotta adjust my settings
I don't feel like they are heavy or spicy at all. Not sure where that claim is coming from.
They may be cool initially, but also of users online saying, and it makes sense, that over-time they build up the heat and retain it, making it even warmer. It's a known thing with cooling gel.
@CellarDoorAU oh man. Yeah, after using them for a year I can confirm they do get hot.
What are your Eq settings for the Maxwells? Do you use the built in EQ’s? I tried them but couldn’t match the precision with footsteps that I’d get with the Penrose at default. (Specifically for Halo Infinite).
I just got this head set man and I can’t hear directional footsteps anywhere bro the imaging is so bad idk what to do if I can fix it or just return it
@@nunyabidness5835chnage the EQ setting on the app or use the immersive setting that Audeze already made
I got the Maxwell's at launch.
Does anybody know of replacement pads for the Maxwell don't have cooling gel please tell me where to get it. Thank you.
I haven’t updated the firmware yet too
@@ZxRiGxZ nice man I’m glad ur liking them. I ended up getting a Logitech pro x2 and the dt 900x pro, the dt 900 x pro is simply amazing at what I want in terms of imaging. Gonna return maxwells and Logitech
Did you even try the presets or made your custom?
@@laxuscloud2495 yes lol. Which you have to do with a phone app btw. Can’t even make customs on your pc yet.
@@nunyabidness5835 thankfully they've updated the software so you can create and use presets on the app, otherwise their beta versions have the feature
Code seems to not be working on Amazon.
Make sure you input it as is.
It could also be that you are including a product that is not from us in the cart / using another coupon / not a prime member / copied the coupon with a space
Am I the only one who feels like this headset doesn't produce a very loud volume at max? Like at make volume I feel like it at half volume
Hello my friend I want to buy a wireless headset what do you recommend for me Computer player 60% Games 40% Movies and music My budget is $160
razer blacksharks
@@TheTechne what best razer blackshark or g733 or hs80??
Damn I used to love your channel, but now you just shill wicked cushion and sometimes aren't completely honest in your vids. Ngl I miss the old techne😊
Man so sorry I feel that way.
Let me chime in here.
1st I have always praised WC, if I love something why not share it.
2nd if there is ever anything I think I’m not honest about, ask. I still stick to my roots same as day 1, and like I said back then, I always will be consumer first, before company.
(PS: backing it up with knuckle “Stay True” tattoo)
I believe talk is cheap, actions speak louder!
Now if I could only get my maxwells they said I have to wait until July
OOOOOF
@@JurassicF4rt ended up buying them for an ebay seller brand new same price
def gets money from wickeed cushions lmao
Costs a fortune to get these cushions outside usa
I have the headset and they don't sound very musical. Kind of dissapointed
Did you ever try hooking these to a TV and watch movies? How does that work?
can u make a video about hyperx cloud 3 @TheTechne
yes
But no headband yet, sadly
Wicked Cushions destroys the Sound - I have sent back them, because hard and Soundquality are a little worse. The WC takes fine details from Sound. I was not happy with them. And the "Football"-Material feel worse. Not my thing. I will try Greekia. ^^
feels like 7min ad
Sold!
Basically just an AD.
hyper x cloud 3 review when ? hehe
soon ;)
ty boss
Aliexpress 10$, do not pay to WC
It’s just advertising. It’s not real review. You had been paid for it.
