Thank' s Joe, can't really see what you medan though...this video really got me excited, since I've been thinking about adding a spinnacker to my Hobie 16 for a long time now!

Thanks Joe! Love your videos, gonn try tk come down to your school this year! Ive been struggling to be get the info tk rig a Nacra 500. Got the boat ised and it has a brand new performance sails spin amd the full kit! Im learning that Nacra has horrendous instructions! Anyway, love your vidoes,, keep up the good work!!!!! 🔥🏆🔥
@@JoyriderTV that would be amazing but I'll be coming down from Canada. It really is crazy how bad the Nacra Instructions are! To say they're incomplete is an understatement! I'd estimate they're about 40% of what you need to know and that's if you already know what you're doing (which I barely do😂). Pictures are all blurry and details are hidden in shadows. When I finally manage to get this thing together I'm going to at least get some good photos to post somewhere.
Hi Joe... Thanks again for a very helpful checklist of parts for spinnaker kits. Just wondering, if for now, on my P15 if u could try a larger jib in light winds... Or would this be disastrous with the specs of my boat.
A couple of quick questions is the pole pre bent ? And with the pole being tied up to the bridal wires and the nose of the pole being pulled down how does that affect your rig tension? Thanks
The pole when off the boat is straight. When fitted it needs a very slight amount of bend pulling into it to prevent it from ever bending as much as to go straight while under pressure. If the main bridle wires of the boat go slack thats too much tension bending the pole and the rig tension has been effected.
What are your thought on adding a spinnaker to a Hobie Miracle 20? I've had some senior sailers tell me "they would not recommend a spin on a Hobie 20. Not enough buoyancy in the bows". Do you agree?
I would certainly give it a go. I don't thinks there's anything wrong with the buoyancy. We used to have one on our Hobie 20 Formula (european) and it worked well.
Exactly what I was looking for. Much appreciation to you for these instructional videos. Super helpful. I was not able to find anything on this subject from searching the net. Question for you. Do you have any experience with Dart 18's? I got one and I am toying with the idea of putting a flat spinnaker on it. I asked Windsport about it and they said it is very rare to see people wanting to add one to a dart 18. They don't even sell it as a regular item. I'm not really sure why as the boat is hopeless down wind. Wondering if there is something I am missing here. Seems like a no brainer to me. Thanks again for the mint vids.
They did sell a spinnaker for the 18 probably about 20 years ago, they weren't very popular and as most 18 sailors (in the Uk ) were into racing, people didn't stick with them. The only reason that i'd fit one would be if I was going to do some distance sailing and wanted to get downwind quicker/further. I wouldn't trust the mast to take the load if you were looking for a high speed turbo booster!
@@JoyriderTV Appreciate the advice. Suppose I would want it for both. But on the latter, more so to speed it up in lighter winds. I usually sail solo so don't have the weight to run one in higher winds I would think. A Nacra F18 just came up for sale around here for a good price. Maybe would be better to just buy that. I'm torn here. The dart pretty well needs all new sails so not sure it is worth dumping that kind of money into it. I am pretty happy with it though overall.
@@miketrotter2975 The Dart is still one of the most versatile cats given the ability to sail solo or with two. The expensive bit of the spinnaker kit will be: the spinnaker the chute. The rest can be done from second hand /old parts Nacra F18 is a sweet ride though
Hey Joe, I'm thinking about fitting a spinnaker to my Dart 18. Would you say the original 15,5m² spi is of adequate size? Would a Hobie 16 spi work as well (better availability). Also would you go for a single line system or a tack line on that boat? I don't have any holes in the trampoline for lines to go through that I'm aware of. Thanks
The H16 spinnaker should work, if you have no holes in the tramp you could fit a block to the top of the front beam for the retrieval. Single line is good - keep it simple.
Any suggestions on where to find off-the-shelf parts to connect the pole to the cross beam? I have a trentec spin pole, but there is no hardware with it to connect the pole to the boat. I'm putting it directly onto the crossbeam of a hobie 21SE.
Hi Joe, tanks for all your videos, it's always a great entertainment and also a real lesson to watch! I bought myself an old school hobie pacific with a spinnaker in a bag. But I've got 3 questions : - I don't have any pad eye on the hull to fit the winch block... Is it risky to attach it to the masts shroud fixation, as shown on the dragoon? - on the hobie official documents it is written that one should use a boom (on the main sheet) while using a spinnaker, otherwise the mast may break.... Is it really recessary? What's the reseason? - could you make a video on how to use the old school spinnaker system on the water ? (I've always used the chute/trumpet system on a tiger) Thanks in advance, I hope that I'll be able to come to Greece at wildwind 😎
The shroud anchor points are fine for attaching the blocks - no problem. Just replace the clevis pin at the bottom for a shackle. (just be sure to tighten it every time before sailing) The boom is to make sure that your mast rotation is under control. In very light - non trapeze conditions it should be fine without but I personally wouldn't put the kite up in windy conditions without a boom.
Because the H14 spinnaker isn't something that is an 'off the peg' item, you'll have to find out how big it will need to be. So before you can get the spinnaker you'll have to fit the pole and work out how long the front edge will need to be. I think you'll need to do some serious Google searching to find out if someone has fitted one before. The Hobie Forums would be a good place to start.
Hi Josep, we have single line system and we are getting some holes and heat marks next to them and seems like the friction with the halyard on the retrieving section is making the damage, can you recommend a low friction halyard?
No you shouldn't have to. You'll have to rivet a fitting onto the front beam fro the pole and one for the cleat, everything else can attach to existing points.
For sheer excitement, this is the best thing you can add to a boat.

In USA i would try Murrays
Would the spinnaker poll work for a drifter sail (a big light wind sail that works on all points of sail)
Yes, but, you may have to attach another fitting further back for the tack of the sail.
