    Not pointless at all! Great ideas 👍 I've learned all my Catamaran knowledge from your videos, they're a huge help! I use the jib halyard to pull and hold the mast while I connect the forestay

    Do you always load the H16 "backwards" on the trailer like that? Seems like a good idea to protect the rudders too

      For the easy mast raise it's certainly practical.

    Evolution- when the aliens come back, you'll find that they have 3 hands. This makes hooking up the forestay to the bridle adjuster very easy.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be pretty handy!

    I’ve got two eye bolts at the top of the mast crutch of the trailer and one at the bottom. I take a separate line and tie a figure 8 stopper to the end eye splices for the trap wires. Then pull line through one of the top eye bolts, down to bottom eye bolt, back up through second top eye bolt and then grab on to it. It essentially creates a 3:1 block pulley. Tie it around the mast and put a half hitch or other simple hitch to allow you to temporarily jump down and tie the forestay. Then the forestay doesn’t already have a line you’re fighting from the main halyard. I have a turbo furling jib setup though so take with a grain of salt.

      If it's windy, best to do it with the back of the boat to the wind - that way you have help from the wind.

    I think the snags and pin drops are part of a real world test, impossible to complete the task without them. There is always! something that doesn't go to plan.

      @JoyriderTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure. Until you've repeated 100 times there'll always be something.

    My mast hinge stays connected to the mast step all of the time. I use screwdriver that is just big enough to fit through the hole on the mast hinge instead of fiddling with a pin.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I take it that you keep it in the bottom part so that the mast can still rotate.

    • @markgallagher1376
      @markgallagher1376 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JoyriderTV yes, I keep it in the mast base. You just have to remember to pull the screwdriver out before you start sailing. I use a small Phillips head screwdriver which is pointy on the end. This helps when putting it in when prepping to lower the mast. Sometimes the mast base and mast hinge doesn’t quite line up so you bang the screwdriver in with your hand and it lines everything up as it goes in.

    Love your videos!!! I am buying a Hobie 16 soon because you inspired me. I have one question: Is it bad for the boat to leave a Hobie cat outside for a season?

    • @williamlawson4209
      @williamlawson4209 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have owned a 1979 Hobie 16 for 3 years. I park it on the trailer outdoors in the cruel New Hampshire winter, covered with a 12'x20' tarp. No problems, just remove the drain plugs and it seems fine. In the summer it's on a mooring for 5 months. A little gel coat bubbling but it dries back down in the winter.

      Hey Joe, two things that may help:
      1. Put your booties toe-first in the aft corners of the tramp so that they stick up. Then before you lift the mast, make sure the shrouds and trap lines are inboard of your booties, and the booties keep your shrouds and traps from getting caught around the corners and other parts of your trailer.
      2. It’s possible for interference between the mast foot nipple and the mast base anti-rotating blocker with older boats where the mast foot and mast base are worn. If you don’t make sure the mast foot nipple drops into the mast base hollow, the nipple can rest on top of the blocker and as you raise the mast, you can actually leverage the mast foot out of the mast by shearing the rivets out and the mast falls unceremoniously on somebody head or somebody’s car. Then you have to repair the mast foot by drilling new holes and installing/sealing new rivets.
      If you want, I can make a video of how we do the mast raise in lovely Lake Lanier, Georgia, USA.

      @elliot I think if you remove as many of the 'soft parts' as possible - trampoline + ropes and store them indoors, the hulls and beams can take it. As William said, coving the boat over will help further.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @dave That's an outstanding suggestion with the boots to stop the shroud under the beam shinanigans! Nice one.
      Yes, next time you're putting your mast up if you were to have a camera running i'd certainly be interested to see your method.

    Hey Joe, good video. I have in the past forgotten to insert the disk bearing into the step. It's annoying to have to drop the mast and place the bearing.

    Is your main halyard 4mm diameter? On my 14T, I do something similar to you. But I tie 6mm rope to the jib tack cringle and then it goes to a pulley at the base of the mast crutch and secures in a jib cleat. Do you think this puts too much strain on my jib material? Then I have a shackle through the bottom hole of the furler chainplate. I run some thin cord from that up to the forestay thimble and back down for purchase. Then I pull as tight as I can and slip in a toggle clevis pin. Do you trust them, or should I use a standard split ring type?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that's a 4mm original halyard.
      I think the method that you're using sounds good - the jib should certainly be able to take it - if it can't then maybe it's time to replace.
      I've never used a toggle pin - if it appears to work well then i don't think there's any need to change.

    What did you nail the other end of the main uphaul to?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The downhaul rope tied to the shackle - where the main would usually go, other end led forward to the bridles.

      Dave, I'm in Clearwater, FL and have to trailer launch my H16 solo about twice a week year around. I just use a 10" mini bungee cord (with the metal end hooks) for pulling the top chain plate forward on the jib forestay. When the jib is not up you can store the the mini bungee cord by looping it around the boat's front main beam near a corner casting to keep it out of the way.

      @@Hobie_16 Hi, Tim, yes, I've met you, you were very nice and gave me some advice and we talked about a year ago on Dunedin Causeway. Im finally sailing my boat after a year of getting it ready, actually, I now have 2 hobie 16's and I do trailer them all the time. I just watched Joe's video again and it looks like exactly what I need but I'm definitely always interested in what works well for others too. I'm sure I'll run into you out on the Causeway again and I'd love to have you look over my boat and give me your opinion on if everything looks rigged right.
