Oh my God, you're right. They cared so little about this guy they didn't even bother to give him his own sprite, let alone one that matches his in-battle sprite (note the lack of blue or white)
Crawdaunt would fit him so well,it’s foreign to the Hoenn region as Juan and as it being a lobster could be a reference to the relation of eating lobster and luxury.
Juan should have had Huntail or Gorebyss as his ace. With how complicated it is to get a Milotic (figuring out how to find Feebas, being forced to play the Berry Blender minigame, learning about contest stats, etc.), Wallace's Milotic is a great way to tempt the player to embark on the long journey of trying to acquire one. Likewise, if Juan had a Huntail or Gorebyss, that will nudge the player to start researching how to get one, eventually leading the player to the whole adventure in the Abandoned Ship. Alternatively, his ace could have also been Relicanth. (IIRC no trainer has a Relicanth in their team so if you haven't seen one underwater, seeing a Relicanth in Juan's team will nudge you to search for one.)
Alternative suggestion: Make Juan a double battle (I know, I know, Tate & Liza were just before him), and give him both Huntail and Gorebyss as his dual aces.
i think kingdra fits him well, my biggest problem with it is that it has double team it would be cool if the had those on his team though but not as his ace. would be better than luvdisc lol
i like how juan's kingdra is the opposite of clair's clair kingdra is pretty much a sweeper by spamming hydro pump meanwhile juan kingdra has a stall set: rest chesto berry with double team his battle made me use shock wave and aerial ace just to hit that goddamn kingdra
Putting all these ideas together: Juan uses a double battle with Huntail, Gorebyss, Kingdra and Crawdaunt. A rain team where Kingdra and Crawdaunt lead. Kingdra sets up rain and stalls and Crawdaunt wears you down with strong attacks. Take down one and Huntail or Gorebyss come in attempting to sweep the rest of your team. Note: I didn't give Juan a Relicanth cause in this scenario I'd give it to Archie since Team Aqua goes to the Seafloor Cavern before Sootopolis)
In ORAS, Steven says he'll be leaving his position as Champion and wants Wallace to take over, implying Juan then takes over Wallace's gym leader position, so he is indirectly acknowledged that way. But sadly, like the Battle Frontier mention in ORAS, this doesn't lead to anything.
I would’ve liked to see the roster shift actually happen for the ORAS post game with Gym Leader rematches. And then Steven could still hang around to still be available for battles 🤔
To be fair Juan stuck more in my mind then some other gym leader's in my opinion. Another Gym Leader I seem to forget a lot is Marlon of Humilau City in Black/White 2 which quite ironic as both Juan and Marlon are the final respective Gyms on the journey to become champion in their own regions but I wonder what everyone else thinks though. Great video Gator, looking forward to the next.
I've always loved Juan's design and wish he was featured more often too. Blue did it a gen later in Let's Go but it would have been cool if Juan helped in the Delta Episode called by Wallace then hopped in the Sootopolis spot afterward, Wallace becomes Champion and Steven the wandering trainer like in Emerald (Got this from in-game dialogue of Steven telling Wallace he'll eventually step down to travel). Also I'd give Juan a team of Crawdaunt, Kingdra, Huntail and Gorebyss in a double battle format.
I've always been disappointed by how dirty they did Juan. His outfit's far more classy than Wallace's, and at the very least they could've given him a more unique ace Pokemon, given this is the "Too Much Water" generation. Sure, Milotic technically fits his theming -- even if it's far more thematic for Wallace -- but Crawdaunt was another good option, or even a dual-ace with Huntail and Gorebyss. Ludicolo's another good option for those eccentric rich people who love to be entertained by a dance-show, or hell, if you wanna look away from Hoenn, Slowking fits him very well, and so does Lanturn without having to step on the toes of other gym leaders
I wish he at least appeared in ORAS, even just as a cameo. As it is he is just mentioned I think once in the conest side story. Don't recall him being mentioned outside of that
Juan is not supposed to be in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire because those games are remakes of RUBY AND SAPPHIRE! Wallace was Sootopolis City's gym leader in the original Ruby and Sapphire and the gym leader he must remain.
He is hinted at during the epilogue. Steven and Wallace are talking and Steven says he's thinking of stepping down to explore and he wants Wallace to take over as champion. While it doesn't name him directly they do hint at who will take over the 3rd gym.
@@starscotten Emerald was like the DLC of that era, so being remakes of Ruby and Sapphire is not an excuse to ignore the content from the third version.
They could have made him and Wallace very distinct by giving Juan kanto and Johto pokemon while Wallace used hoenn ones Juan could have kindra corsola garados tentacruel lantern starmiw etc. Wallace milotic quishcash ludicolo peliper warlord and relicamph Both become immediately different from one another and styles are unique and Juan could stand out as a very powerful water gym leader
It seems to me that the anime originally planned for Wallace to be the eighth Hoenn Gym Leader, but when Emerald became a thing, they just put Juan into the anime in his place, without altering his team or characteristics in any way. Juan's team in the anime is identical to Wallace's and they both are skilled Coordinators, which, to me, makes Juan seem like Wallace with a different character skin and name without an identity of his own, which feels like a bummer to me.
Yeah, the anime kinda did that with Black & White. Ash's eighth gym battle was with Roxie, even though the badge case from an earlier episode clearly showed an Opelucid-shaped indent.
“Voiced by goku” 😂😂 I know what you mean but the mental picture of goku clocking out at dragon ball Z then going to his second job and sitting in a sound booth as a part time job is HILARIOUS
Tbh I think it would have been cool if in ORAS, they could have given Juan some sort of role in the post game. Either being the ultimate battle like Steven was in Emerald, or perhaps being the head of the Battle Maison in Hoenn. They could have had some story about how alongside Wallace he also mentored the Battle Chatelaines, and his battle could have been a reward for beating all of them
Juan should've been in the Gen 3 remakes not some random character that was made to tie in with Mega Altaria (and the fact that she gets to be included in Pokemon MastersEX but not Juan is wild). But honestly it would be fun if Juan appeared in ORAS interacting with Wallace and Lisia at Pokemon Contest
I know Blue did it a generation later in Let's Go but it would have been cool if in ORAS after beating the league, Juan helps out during the Delta Episode and then hops in the gym after Wallace moves up to Champion and Steven a wandering trainer (getting this from in game dialogue where Steven tells Wallace he'll step down eventually to travel)
Man I loved this style of video where you analyse a specific character from the series. I know there's probably not much to talk about, but Karen is my favorite trainer in Pokémon and it would make my day to see a video about her, even if it's just a YT shorts
Honestly it’s a shame we haven’t heard from him Since Black & White 2. He should have at least had a cameo for ORAS or been someone you have me to take on in the Delta Episode
I legitimatelly thought this was the first time I'm hearing of this guy, then I saw the art and I couldn't believe I couldn't even remember about his existence, I know every other single Gym Leader by heart
I actually prefer Juan as the final gym leader over Wallace. As for Wallace, I'll never understand why he was made champion in emerald when Steven was the perfect character to be the champion for the Hoenn region. Wallace could've been made into a sort of final challenge for players participating in the region's contest challenge since it fits his flamboyant personality. Also it would make him a type of counterpart to Steven, both being the top trainers of their respective professions adding to the themes of duality and opposites that the gen three games had, specially if they made him use both water and ice type pokemon as opposed to Steven's steel and rock type pokemon.
I swear I remember at the end of the Delta episode of ORAS, Wallace mentions Juan as "an old mentor of mine" to potentially replace him as Sootopolis' gym leader when Steven is talking about stepping down as champion.
I feel like you should acknowledge how in the manga Steven had already lost the title of champion to Wallace as of before the start of the Ruby and Sapphire chapter, however was still the acting champion, due to Wallace not taking up the title at the time, prioritising being the Sootopolis Gym Leader, and a contest star. After Wallace gains the title of champion, Juan is introduced as his mentor and what not.
At least he's mentioned by Lisia in ORAS (you need to defeat both her and Wallace in a Pokémon Contest to unlock that dialogue) and Wallace also mentions him in Masters, so Juan is not completely forgotten. For some reason, ORAS, just like BDSP some years later, were focused on the original games and the content from the third version were almost completely ignored, and of course The Pokémon Company focused exclusively on these remakes while knowing a lot of content was lost back in Gen 3. I theorize that Masuda influenced in this decision, given how Emerald and Platinum overshadowed the games he directed (RS and DP respectively). This year is Emerald's 20th anniversary. I wonder if The Pokémon Company will even acknowledge the existence of this game. Even Masters barely includes content from this version: Wallace has a variation of the Champion battle theme, but he only has his Gym Leader attire from ORAS; three Hoenn Frontier Brains are also there, but Anabel is considered a character from Sun and Moon because her International Police variant is the only one available. Platinum has far better representation in this gacha than Emerald, even if TPC tried to do with Platinum the same they did with Emerald when ORAS were released.
Juan is like the most understandable n kind man I’ve seen since emerald n series back then. I haven’t forgotten bout this dude n in the end he was like a mentor or someone to talk to when it came to advice n learning bout pkmn. Ps: I would have love to see his pkmn battles n style in a contest competition. N i bet that when pursue to become a gym leader until he decided to step down and pass it on to Wallace. Makes logic since why Wallace took his place in the upgraded games.
I wish the developers could’ve added a Gorebyss and Huntail as part of his roster, especially since he was introduced in Emerald. This would’ve given him more distinction, aside from the Evasion-spamming Kingdra. Plus it would’ve highlighted the Underwater Pokemon, considering the routes seemed to be such a memorable part of the Hoenn games He really could’ve utilized other Pokemon, especially with the vast majority of Hoenn being filled with Water Pokemon-Lanturn, Relicanth, and Clamperl’s branched evos to name a few
Relicanth, Lanturn, Gorebyss, and Huntail all are obtainable evolution lines via the Underwater routes. Throw in Kingdra (which is only available as a Horsea via Super Rod in Routes with Underwater access) and you've got yourself a theme.
If PMEX was able to do Kris some justice, I hope they can do the same with Juan, but the game is almost 5 years old and he's nowhere to be found, so I don't think that's likely :/
Juan also appears in pokemon BW2's PWT and there is a NPC who gives more information on all the gym leaders, including Juan and the unadded Koga. Guess you forgot this. The most interesting trait consistently talked about Juan is that he's a 'ladies man'.
God, I hope they bring back the PWT whenever the next unova-related games come out, the nostalgia would be wild. Suppose the absence of the National Dex might throw a wrench into that, though…
I've played Pokémon since Gen 1 but never played Emerald so this is literally the first time I've ever heard of Juan. Of all the gym leaders he's definitely the forgotten juan
This is gonna sound super nitpick-y, but I kinda wish he was Hoenn’s Ice-specialist. I know we’re already have Glacia, but he could’ve been the first instance of a Gym being different type between versions, prior to SwSh. Also, I love the aesthetic idea of giving him a Walrein. I could totally see him combing its hair into impeccable curls.
Yeah, I always hated that Emerald had the 8th gym leader AND the champion both specializing in water type. Juan should have been given a different type, and ice would make the most sense based on the gym puzzle. They could have swapped out Glacia like how USUM swapped out Hala from the E4.
He's not only forgettable but also uneccessary, why the hell did they replace Steven who was a much harder champion over Wallace. Instead of making Steven the end game badass like Red, they could've done the same thing and make either our character from gen 2 OR even Silver just to see how he's been doing. If he does return, make it for the coordination contests.
Wallace is often an overlooked champion, and it's unfortunate that some people sneer at and ridicule a Water-type Pokémon champion. Indeed, Hoenn may be abundant in water, but that shouldn't exclude the possibility of having a Water-type Pokémon League Champion. If any champion deserves more scorn and ridicule, it would be Trace. Pokémon Emerald seemed like a sequel to Hoenn, and it was a satisfying turn of events when Wallace was crowned the Pokémon League Champion in Emerald.
I would’ve given Juan: Huntail/Luvdisc/Whiscash/Crawdaunt/Kingdra For Wallace I’d give him: Gorebyss/Luvdisc/Whiscash/Seaking/Milotic As to differentiate them
His team is borderline troll. I trully believe it was made to troll with players. It starts with a Luvdisc which is laughable. And then a bit of grinding with his Whiscash, Sealeo and Crawdunt, but is easilly KO'd by Sceptile and Manectric. And then... that Kingdra... my god. If Whiscash was able to use Raindance and you easilly KO's his other mons with Rain still active the time Kingdra comes, you are in a world of watery HELL. It has Swift swim, meaning it outspeeds your team in the rain, and is a freaking TANK. Then it SPAMS Double team, and is impossible to one hit. Add to that, it has the ability Rest while holding a Chesto berry (you won't KO it). Juan also has 2 Hyperpotions. It also has Water Pulse which can cause confuse, and Icebeam that can freeze and is effective against Sceptile, Aerial Ace Swellow, and Perish Song Altaria and Pelipper. It's the most annoying pokemon in pokemon Emerald. Literally the tanky staller version of Clair's Sniper Kingdra.
When playing Platinum recently, i thought about how Emerald swapped out the champion and I wondered about an alternate world where Riley replaced Cynthia as champion of Sinnoh in the third version game. Cynthia and Steven Stone both are beloved by fans as two young, attractive, well-dreased and strong champions, so they have a similar notoriety. Riley and Steven Stone have some similar vibes as dapper Steel type users. And then Riley and Cynthia both use Lucario too. So it just sorta feels right. Anyways, Cynthia is one of the coolest champions, so I'm glad they didnt take that from her. Just random thoughts.
It's pretty funny video how this vid dropped after nearly getting literally washed by him with the buffed team I gave him in a small hack I did for Emerald. He's always been one of those gym leaders that's just kinda there, figured I buff him to make him more memorable cause I do like his design. Now just waiting on my pokemon friends to get to him for their reactions
Wasn't even in Journeys iirc. Now a lot of gym leaders in the anime missed out there but this is odd cause Ash does head to Hoenn and bumps into Wallace. Though even that was handled rather oddly and is a bit divisive lol
I swear I’m the world’s biggest Juan fan. I love this dude, he’s so cool. I’m so pissed he didn’t appear in ORAS AT ALL. I wish he was more loved. Also he’s hot as fuck no I will not apologise.
100% agree that his ace should not have been Milotic. A lot of people already made some good suggestions, and I am convinced that Game Freak got lazy. This was a prime opportunity for another Water type Pokémon to take center stage.
This guy is definitely more recognisable than most of the Gen 6 gym leaders, if only because he still somewhat puts up a fight (if you don’t use the legendary :/) and has immaculate drip.
I feel the sole reason he may not have Crawdaunt as his ace is due to solely it's water dark dual typing Dark having the connotation and literal japanese name of "evil" could be a characterisation extended onto Juan the execs or head designers didn't want Which sucks because it still would have been cooler than Kingdra being reused as a final gym ace, and Crawdaunt could have had a solid buff to it's stats as Juan's ace, could even be viable now, which is a heartbreaking thought as I have always LOVED it's design
Yeah, probably could’ve also just been Whiscash, another Gen 3 water mon. Feel like that’s what he would have if they bring him to Pokémon Masters, especially because Tierno has Crawdaunt 🤔
Such a shame he has such a good design, he is actually mentioned by name in ORAS from Wallace when he talks to Lisia if you do the entire contest master rank sub plot.
I checked to make sure and It's not Wallace who mentions him, but Lisia: "Yeah, it was because I saw my uncle doing contests that I decided to try, too. He's my mentor. He taught me all about competing in contests! And Uncle Wall has a mentor of his own, named Juan... I wonder if someone will ever look up to me as a mentor. Who knows?" Ultimately just a small difference admittedly, and it doesn't change that he is acknowledged by name like you said
IMO the most Forgettable gym leader has to be Janine, who replaced Koga as the Kanto`s Poison gym leader in HGSS. Like Juan, she was only in the HGSS series, but she is a gym leader of a mid post game gym that you quickly fight and move on, at least Juan was a the last gym leader of the region
I never played Ruby/Sapphire, but I played Emerald AND I watched the anime at the time. So weirdly enough, Juan is anchored in my brain as the eighth Gym Leader of Hoenn, and I never remember Wallace as anything but the Champion. I agree that his team lacks a bit of uniqueness due to his ace being a repeat of Claire's. Most Water Pokemon that could have been fitting are used by other trainers in the region (Milotic by Wallace, Walrein by the Ice Elite4...), Crawdaunt doesn't look right for him in term of personality/design. But he has Lapras in post-game rematches, that could have been cooler as his Ace I believe, especially since Lapras is supposed to be a wise Pokemon (fitting the mentor). Another fitting choice would have been to make him another double battle Gym Leader (like in the anime!) with both Gorebyss and Huntail as his aces, as they are both really rare Pokemons to obtain (and he also has them in the World Tournament).
I always wondered why they had you fight Wallace twice in ORAS’s story rather than replace his second fight outside the gym with Juan. I get that they probably wanted to give Wallace a bit more since he was known for also being a Champion, so giving him a postgame story fight was fitting, but it would have made equal if not more sense to have that fight be Juan instead.
I think about how Juan's overworld sprite is just an edited variation of Steven's
Oh my God, you're right. They cared so little about this guy they didn't even bother to give him his own sprite, let alone one that matches his in-battle sprite (note the lack of blue or white)
What no it isn - oh my God it is.

He really could’ve utilized other Pokemon, especially with the vast majority of Hoenn being filled with Water Pokemon-Lanturn, Relicanth, and Clamperl’s branched evos to name a few
Relicanth, Lanturn, Gorebyss, and Huntail all are obtainable evolution lines via the Underwater routes. Throw in Kingdra (which is only available as a Horsea via Super Rod in Routes with Underwater access) and you've got yourself a theme.
Juan is the definition of Charismatic and Rich guy.
If PMEX was able to do Kris some justice, I hope they can do the same with Juan, but the game is almost 5 years old and he's nowhere to be found, so I don't think that's likely :/
Ah, Juan. Thank goodness the anime made me still remember him.
I kinda like him actually and prefer him over Wallace. Im glad the Anime made a spotlight for him. Wish he was in ORAS tho
I want Juan to show up in Gen 10 for absolutely no reason or context and doesn’t even knowledge his gym leader status
Only for those who didn't play Emerald
Those who did still have Kingdra PTSD
He's not forgetable. He's hot
I would’ve given Juan: Huntail/Luvdisc/Whiscash/Crawdaunt/Kingdra
For Wallace I’d give him: Gorebyss/Luvdisc/Whiscash/Seaking/Milotic
As to differentiate them
Honestly though Juan makes Clair look like child's play with how stacked his kingdra is and how bullshit his rematch team is
1:29 How is he forgetful? He's forgettable, yeah, but what does he forget? Very confused about the word choice there.
I had a bit of a crush on him as a kid because I thought he was really cool in the anime.
He’s so just stylish
I personally think Ramos is more forgettable, Juan at least has more style than him
He is so forgettable that he's actually quite rememberable
Bounced back around.
Actually British Goku
If Juan was in ORAS his ace should’ve definitely been a mega gyarados to contrast with Wallace’s Milotic
He ain’t no Roxie, that’s for sure. 😉
I still wish I can borrow his outfit…
At least he's got style
Wasn't even in Journeys iirc. Now a lot of gym leaders in the anime missed out there but this is odd cause Ash does head to Hoenn and bumps into Wallace. Though even that was handled rather oddly and is a bit divisive lol
Juan moment
I swear I’m the world’s biggest Juan fan. I love this dude, he’s so cool. I’m so pissed he didn’t appear in ORAS AT ALL. I wish he was more loved. Also he’s hot as fuck no I will not apologise.
Double team
Kingdra ugh
100% agree that his ace should not have been Milotic. A lot of people already made some good suggestions, and I am convinced that Game Freak got lazy. This was a prime opportunity for another Water type Pokémon to take center stage.
This guy is definitely more recognisable than most of the Gen 6 gym leaders, if only because he still somewhat puts up a fight (if you don’t use the legendary :/) and has immaculate drip.
I played this game for hundreds of hours and don't remember him ahahaha
So forgettable nobody says his name correctly is Juan as in Who-ann
And they did it again with Marlon in Gen 5
My favorite leader in Hoenn
Love his design, and always found it jarring how his sprite didn’t resemble his overworld sprite i; the slightest
I'm sure Juan will be in Masters soon. I predict he will be partnered with Whiscash
I feel the sole reason he may not have Crawdaunt as his ace is due to solely it's water dark dual typing
Dark having the connotation and literal japanese name of "evil" could be a characterisation extended onto Juan the execs or head designers didn't want
Which sucks because it still would have been cooler than Kingdra being reused as a final gym ace, and Crawdaunt could have had a solid buff to it's stats as Juan's ace, could even be viable now, which is a heartbreaking thought as I have always LOVED it's design
Yeah, probably could’ve also just been Whiscash, another Gen 3 water mon. Feel like that’s what he would have if they bring him to Pokémon Masters, especially because Tierno has Crawdaunt 🤔
In the anime(ash's universe) he is canon in the anime
Nah he’s chill
Hope Juan ends up in pokemas
Manamajaun
Can you do a video about the Battle Resort Masters from ORAS?
Such a shame he has such a good design, he is actually mentioned by name in ORAS from Wallace when he talks to Lisia if you do the entire contest master rank sub plot.
I checked to make sure and It's not Wallace who mentions him, but Lisia:
"Yeah, it was because I saw my uncle doing contests that I decided to try, too. He's my mentor. He taught me all about competing in contests! And Uncle Wall has a mentor of his own, named Juan... I wonder if someone will ever look up to me as a mentor. Who knows?"
Ultimately just a small difference admittedly, and it doesn't change that he is acknowledged by name like you said
@@thereddragon1587 my bad yea it was Lisia, i havent played ORAS in years haha
Ramos moment
Juan is my favorite gym leader. Such a shame ORAS shafted him
I feel like Juan's ace should be Gorebyss & Huntail.
Juan feels super relevant to me these days because I keep losing to him in Emerald Rogue…
I’ve used her a lot in Masters EX, so I’m familiar with her from that, but I can understand if your only exposure is GS/HGSS.
He is a Gym leader in one single game. Kinda hard to remember him.
Another fitting choice would have been to make him another double battle Gym Leader (like in the anime!) with both Gorebyss and Huntail as his aces, as they are both really rare Pokemons to obtain (and he also has them in the World Tournament).
why the hell this guy have a same my name 🤨
Created soley to ruin the champion fight
I always wondered why they had you fight Wallace twice in ORAS’s story rather than replace his second fight outside the gym with Juan. I get that they probably wanted to give Wallace a bit more since he was known for also being a Champion, so giving him a postgame story fight was fitting, but it would have made equal if not more sense to have that fight be Juan instead.
Not gonna lie. I struggled harder against Juan's Kingdra, compared to Clair's.
Juan isn't forgettable, Emerald was a good Pokémon game
only nitpick i have with emerald
Love the video
