- In this video my son and I install a engnbldr camshaft on his 1986 Toyota 22RE. I have been a Ford tech for 30 years so if you have some pointers to help others out please add them below. I do not claim to be the Toyota God.
Ron still helping DIYers after all these years. R.I.P Ron
Timing chain is pretty straight foward. I can make a video but I don't work on these often. One good tip is remove the oil pan. To get the pieces out and to make the cover go back on easier
Tanks for your time and share your video, I have a Toyota pick up 1983 and that information is very useful.
RIP Ron. Just a heads up. You rotate the crank a full 360 degrees after adjusting your first four valves to do the last four. This in turn rotates the camshaft 180 degrees giving you the proper orientation. He did right stuff but was thinking about cam rotation when he said 180. Good guy and he did good work 👍
Is it necessary to degree the cam? I'm not familiar with degreeing
Rip brother you are missed
I always take a video of my 22RE and use anti seize upon reassembly.
Just a tip, I remove the spark plugs as well as drain the water from the system, and pull the t stat. The couple of times I didn’t the head gasket started to blow. Also I’ve didn’t think about the wedge, I’ve always used a zip tie in the cam gear hole around the timing chain.
I WAS WATCHING THE VIDEO ,FOLLOWER THE INSTRUCTIONS AND I DID.THANKS SO MUCH . ESTUVE VIENDO EL VIDEO,SEGUI LAS INSTRUCCIONES Y LO HICE.MUCHAS GRACIAS DE PARTE DE JOSELO
Rip dieseltechron. Great video. I just bought the same cam for my 1984 Toyota
TheLeachMan97 he died bro?
Josh Hutch yeah he was in a car crash
fell asleep behind the wheel, one of my biggest fears working away from home its a lot easier then it sounds.
Yoda Doug Dang. He looks tired in this video even :/
@@Toyotas_n__Tools He didn't fall asleep, a 20 year old kid did (allegedly) and sent my Dad's car into the air when my Dad was rounding a corner. Pretty sure that was a lie though based on the level of damage, more likely the kid was going an insane speed around the corner and lost traction.
Great clear video.
According to the manual they say it's wrong to leave the head on when replacing the cam but you had success. One thing I recently heard about was using ratchet straps to hold pressure on the head when doing this.
Good tip, keeping pressure was my concern too!
Best video ive seen on 22re top end.
I watched this video years back and I’m jut now refreshing as I “plan” to attempt a cam swap here in the next few days on my 22RE. So, I’m attempting a refresh here.. I have a rebuilt rocker assembly with surfaced rockers and awaiting the cam arrival. In any case, I’ve always wondered how long the head gasket lasted after Ron and son completed this little upgrade? I read in the comments that over a year had passed without issue, but that was many years ago now in February 2021. Anyone know? I’d be curious. It also wouldn’t surprise me at all to learn it’s still running well today. I’m hoping the family still has that pickup. Ron’s videos are missed and he did took great care in his work, it’s obvious. Thanks
Been driving a 22R's since 87' (4 different engines) and suggest going the extra couple hours and replace the head gasket....Its the weak point of the 22R. Last one I had to do blew between #3 and #4 cyls and burned out some aluminum on the head. Took it to Larry's head service in LA and they where able to fix it by tig welding in the missing aluminum. I cant see doing a cam change without a new head gasket unless you like to do it right....cause you had to did it twice...
I will like to say thank you I appreciate you taking your time to show us u safe me lot of money the I dint have Thank you have a blessed day
I NEVER reuse headbolts....actually, I prefer STUDS, you never have to worry about stretch with them. Also, I have all the rockers checked and machined (if necessary) before reassembly. This assures minimal cam lobe wear and dont forget to set valve clearances. I also tie a wire to the chain....just an added precaution...
great video. i feel a little more confident in doing mine now haha. just need to pick up some feeler gauges and a torque wrench.
you look like alec baldwin
Does the wooden wedge go between the ascending and descending chain? Or does the wooden wedge go between the chain and the side of the case?
just an FYI the valves won't bend if u have it wrong they are something called a tolerance motor I got a 22r and the timing chain snapped and I cranked it and all my valves are good
they will bend.. the first timing chain job I did as a teenager on my 22r I put it on 180 degrees wrong on the cam.. and in 3 seconds, I bent all 4 exhaust valves, and had zero compression
22re is a interference motor. They put dips in the piston to keep from bending valves on some models
22R however does not have valve reliefs in the piston in fact the piston has a crown which protrudes higher than the surface of the block deck
just a FYI the head bolts go to 78 ft./lbs and the valve lash that is recommended by they guy that builds that cam is 7 and 9 and it will shut the valves up
Is the engine the same in the 1990 Toyota pickup 2wd
My friend, how strong is the tightening torque of the machine head screws and how much is the tightening torque of the cylinder head bolts under the machine
What is the measurements on the timing chain wedge. Im pulling the cylinder head off and don't want to mess with the timing chain.
Just posted the LCE header video
I could not find the video of you installing the header on this 22R? Did it get posted, or deleted? Thank you, Jim.
Nice video! My son and I did the same thing on a 94 22re.
so your comfortable with pulling the headbolts without having to replace the gasket? interesting. i didnt know you could do this.
Can the cam gear come loose from the cam so that the cam then doesn't spin?
was it the 268 torquer cam ?
hello just wondering about how much more hp you got with the new cam dave
Not sure. I could tell a little in torque.
i put on new head and cam then adjusted rockers then 1000 miles readjusted rockers they seem to have a bit of clatter i used old rockers could it need rockers? and i can pull head bolts without changing bolts or gasket again? PS fun video you should check mine out
can't wait to do this to mine great video
How do I make sure the cam isn't out 180°
can you get to the timing chain guide and replace it with this method instead of removing the front end of the engine?
christopher cowan unfortunatley, no, you have to pull the timing cover to get to the bolts for the guide. the're pretty far down there. and most kits come with a tensioner too, so i just change them out at the same time.
I have a question i did this to my truck with a timing chain and it won't start now and i have no clue what it is i spent all day doing it
Joe Murray check your timing
Did any of you guys that bought the LCE cam buy the rocker arm assembly also?
They wouldnt sell me a cam unless I purchased new rocker arms along with it
most Toyotas I worked on you can't take the head off without taking the cams off because the bolts are underneath the cam
Very educational video, good job, I just picked up a 93 regular cab(broken timing chain) 50.200 miles. Low
I'm excited to work on these awesome 22re...
Do you havr any videos of how to replace timing chain?
Just make sure you mark everything i just started my timing chain today to find out my harmonic balancer needs replaced along with half of my truck its an 89 Sr5 extended cab with 72500 miles and the truck is about junk... hopfully after dumping a grand into this thing it will be the winter beater i thought it would be
Thanks Chris
Ron,
I was wondering how long the head gasket held up after the cam swap. (did it blow) I just built a 22re and lost one cam lob. Really didn't want to pull the head again, but had always heard to replace gasket if you loosened head bolts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Over a year. No problems at all
+DieselTechRon still no issues?
How exactly did he/you line up the cam?
its always a good idea to use plastiguage to check the cam bearings to make sure they aren't gonna fail especially on higher milage engines, and also a new set of headbolts ...when you torque bolts down the threads stretch, and can give u problems ...also new rockers are a good idea too...
So biggest question.. Was the money for the cam and the install worth the power change?
Rafael Michel Its a noticeable difference in power and fuel economy. My buddy put an LCE cam in his 2wd 1990 22re @250,000 miles. Thing runs well and is fun to drive for a little 4 banger
Awesome video
Is this cam ok for daily driving or just off-road? Will the engine last a long time with this cam as a daily driver?
If you have a little larger tires its perfect for both! The video maker has passed onto the heavens but I can maybe help as you work on your truck, I update my channel weekly.
Yota Doug's Tool Collecting Channel thanks man! Just rebuilt my motor and installed this cam. Regeared it to 4.88’s and added lockers front and rear! God bless this guy, so sorry to hear the news!
Can this work for a 89-95?
Cam and rockers "mate for life" so putting a new cam with old rockers (or even re surfaced rockers) will end up damaging the cam.
most of the time, unless you have excessive wear, it will be fine, I just put a LC cam mine my with 165K, no problems.. but i did hold it is 1300rpm for 18 mins, to break it in properly.
funny how LC says to get new rockers also...
Mine are doing just fine. I just inspected them 2 weeks ago. They mated perfectly, all surfaces slick and shiny. I have spent nearly $2000 with LCE, they sell the best stuff for sure. But they are in the business to make money, so of course they will recommend new rockers, also, because they are not present to inspect each cam installation. And some rockers badly worn should be replaced, and if they recommend it be replaced then they can be liability free.
If there is no hour glass wear pattern on the rocker surface, it's not a problem with a new cam. Hour glass shaped wear indicates there is back and forth movement from the rocker assembly, and the rocker assembly should be rebuilt with new springs and rocker arms, or the whole assembly replaced.
Be very careful with reusing rockers. I rebuilt a 22RE head, new valves and cam, but original rockers. Assembly lube, break in oil, 15 minutes at 2000rpm. Changed oil after and then at 200 miles. Reset lash. 3000 mile oil changes. Lash check. By 10,000 miles the cam was toast. Wear on all exhaust lobes.
Why did you have to drain the coolant ?
jose vargas to keep coolant out of the cylinders
With all due respect, your video is so full of mistakes, improper procedures, and misinformation I am actually shocked. No wonder the internet and TH-cam is so full of Bravo Sierra!
It actually works just fine Ron was a legend, he was killed in a car accident when a kid fell asleep and hit his car dead on.
How does the car run any different
He passed away years ago 😔
can halpe me to got my sds em-5 towork i need the programe to get it to start toyota 4runner 22re moter
or do youno of someone that haes the program so i can capeit
thank you
lol
Haammmmnnn
be nice skank. lol
Hey how is this holding up on you? I'm looking into getting this for mine
It's been over a year. No pribkrms
Great Video thanks for posting big help
Did you not put new bearings in and break them in? If so...not too bright. If u did u shoulda mentioned it
Yes I agree. I leave comments on to help each other not to insult, also the videos are to help.
DieselTechRon
I don't know wth that guy is talking about with the bearings. If anything should have been replaced with the cam it would be the rockers since they're what's riding on the cam lobes.
Greate video
Biggest flaw he did not mention was to apply some assembly grease on all the lobes of the cam prior to re assembly. Easiest way to flatten all those lobes.
He kinda sneaked it in. He said go ahead and put some lubricant on the other one and install it now. @9:43
Were your son ? Daddy doing all the work of course
I love you Ron
I like to pull #1 and put a screwdriver in it ti verify tdc
Note: The timing chain will not come off the bottom sprocket, no need for the wedge.
Aaron Birkholz are u sure. I don't want to risk it
Misinformation the chain CAN come off the lower sprocket and can be a bitch to get lined back up come reassembly time
I cringed when you used the power ratchet to snug up your head bolts.
Why? the ratchets go up to about 35 ftlbs
Hey man... What's going on why no video on the headers
He has video on header
Rip Ron
nice
Great video
you talk to much
