PhotoPills has an AR function so you can look through your camera with a map view, it’s perfect for mapping out shots before they happen with the moon or sun.
PhotoPills also has an excellent newsletter. They don't spam you and you stay up too date with all the cool celestial events like super moons and eclipses.
My husband and I couldn’t stop oohing and ahhhing! So amazing you got to experience this and even more amazing that you were able to capture the moon in all its glory! 🌕
How did you expose for the moonrise? When I tried to shoot the supermoon on the beach I had to under expose the foreground several stops to get good detail in the moon itself.
Yep, the whole scene was underexposed to get the moon detail. As you can see in some of the video clips, it's still quite a bit brighter outside than the photos show. The moon was also moving at quite a pace across the sky, which would be a hinderance to long-exposures without doing a composite. It's very tricky indeed - especially without a tripod!
Antar, this is the conundrum of photography. Take for example a photo of two people one wearing white, and one black - who would you meter for ? The answer is neither. You’d need a 18% grey card on incendient light meter for the “correct exposure” because all light meters expose for the mid-tone. That all said, If the “film” can’t cope with the exposure you’d need to bracket the exposure and either dodge and burn to correct the exposure or use HDR software (carefully or it would like it). For those of you now incensed I’d dare to manipulate an image in the digital-darkroom, take a look a Ansel Adams “Moonrise over Hernandez”. If he can do it, I can do it.
I've got the 200-500mm for Nikon and it's a lot of fun to shoot with such a lens. Although it might not be suited well for urban and street photography because of its size and weight. With these kind of lenses you're also the eyecatcher of everyone who's around you. If I'm outside with this lens, almost everytime there's someone asking me something or passing a comment on the lens. But I really like my 200-500mm Nikkor for bird photography or outdoor sports at bright and sunny days.
Photo Pills planner. (Pitching in with other commenters) I used it to get a super moon in Portland Maine. You can track the Milky Way, too. Never used the AR mode. Didn’t know about it until now…
Yes! I absolutely love it! It's only visible for a short while though. I often want to call it pink hour, as a step between golden hour and blue hour, but realistically it'll only be about pink minute haha
Great video ,Joe. I’ll have to stay with my Fuji 70-300. As for the beautiful sunsets, we have had many evenings like that here in southern Ontario Canada (Niagara Region) due to a long ,hot, dry summer.
I love when happy accidents like that happen. On my first trip to London in 2018, I wandered into the Bank district to find it completely empty of cars. It turned out it was the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1. I got some of my favorite shots of the trip that day.
Joe! Just wondering if you help me out with something not related to photography! I was planning a trip to Kaula Lumpur, were you required to get any specific vaccines, yellow fever , hepA or hepA etc? Cheers Stephen Thanks for any help
Nice - simple, strong compositions. The individuals and pairs of buildings or tight clusters hit the strongest. You've got some really beautiful cityscapes. Well done. Weather is always a matter of luck, what you do with it is, more often, a matter of skill. Luck is useful. It also makes being a pro landscape photographer (which I'm not anymore) hard. Everyone has a camera, and everyone can get lucky (right place, right time, the software actually works). I can't remember how many times I've heard people say, "Yeah, well, I could do that." or "I've got a shot like that." And, of course, they could or they do. It just took a bit of luck. The fact that I went back to that spot dozens of times at all hours, sometimes waiting hours for shadows to move, or clouds to change position, or... None of that matters, it's just that one time. I can't think of another art form that allows an untrained person to create a "masterpiece" (unless you're talking about abstract painting - which I don't).
Wow, I really enjoyed this video. It was a good little adventure that turned out super. You may not get shots like the super moon ones again in your lifetime.
Do you find yourself having to crank ISO very high for most shots during blue hour? Very tempted but not sure if I should get this lens or a Nikon D810 and a Sigma 150-600…and have change leftover!
Max iso I went to was 6400 I think. The difficulty is that a brighter exposure actually overexposes the moon significantly, so it's not necessarily about getting it brighter, but more about getting the lens more stable for sharper buildings etc. I actually had to underexpose the whole scene in order to capture the moon correctly. If I did a long-exposure to get a clean city view, the moon would be too bright and also blurry because it was moving too fast. In hindsight, it's actually a trickier scenario than I realised, so I wish I'd spoken a bit more about my initial intentions compared to the end result at the time I filmed it. There's always next time!
@@joeallam Definitely a tricky shot, especially if foreground features are fairly close. I guess you could do separate exposures and blend in post. Or is that cheating? Could even add ET and Elliot on their BMX.
Iso was at 12,800 for a lot of the images as the lens is f/8 when zoomed all the way in. The noise is definitely very noticeable when looking over the images
@@joeallam Very interesting. I’m looking at this lens but wondered about the slow end. I guess daytime wildlife shots would be fine but when the light starts to go it might be unusable.
Hi joe from Jakarta You must visit Indonesia because there are so much things, cultures and good coffees in Indonesia such as Bali, Labuan Bajo, etc #Peace #WonderfulIndonesia
I'd love to return! I really enjoyed Bali when I was there - although I was primarily spending my time teaching web development, so I didn't get a huge amount to explore. Jakarta looks amazing though!
@@joeallam We will wait for the vlog then 😀 Love to hear that you enjoy Bali Please have fun on your next visit to Indonesia Lots of culture and great places to take some photos here
Glad you had better fortune than I ☺️ As you may have watched, my supermoon behaved way more rudely. I still shot this same one, but I had returned the 150-600 already and now I know who received it, haha
Helicopter. Yeah, it's some £££, but if you plan it right, could be golden (literally and figuratively). If you make it a video "doing the peter pan thing" or such ...
Awesome shot, Joe! Does this make you interested to add a super zoom lens in your personal kit? Glad to see you make new friends on this occasion. If you do have plans to visit Jakarta in the future, pls do tell us in advance. I'll show you around!
I'm unsure if I'd want to buy a superzoom to be honest. I do enjoy the results, but the size of the lens is a real hurdle and can only be useful in the evening/night when paired with a tripod/monopod, which adds even more bulk. Given that most of my photography is travel related, it's a really hard decision to take it or not. Thought of you when mentioning Jakarta - will definitely say on the channel if I make any plans!
That photo where you take the shiny building is so beautiful !!! Kudos! Best regards from Uruguay!
Thank you for another SUPER CHILL VLOG, and it was awesome shot~

Had the 150-600 for a month, just got the XH2S today from Adorama NYC. Loving the first impressions!
You are a positive force in the world! I enjoy watching your adventures and learning from you
I appreciate that - thank you! ✌️
Serendipity! I enjoyed the video, and love the horizontal shot of The Shard tip by itself against that pastel sky.
The prints turned out just beauuutiful!
So excited to launch them! Very VERY soon! 👀
Beautiful shots Joe! Lovely vlog too too. Just chilling here with my coffee watching your video and feeling relaxed and inspired 🤙🏼
Really enjoyed this vlog! Felt like I was chilling and watching the sunset with you. Good vibes.

I love that you didn't even know there was going to be a super moon! haha. What a happy turn of events. Really enjoyed watching this video!
