      I’m not religious. I came here to find out and now I’m terrified of religion. I understand it’s not what you believe in though that wasn’t clear at the beginning. So basically, the devil lives not only in society but he also hides out in religion. They said the devil was clever. That’s a very clever more on the devils part don’t you think?

      I know. I felt sick hearing about this and then while reading the news article in the link in the description. I’m horrified that none of those men went to the police. It’s disgusting and horrifying. It’s inhuman what they did to that woman, and what they allowed to be done to her and how much pain she must be going through to have this be done to her by someone she trusted. These are the depths of depravity.

    I have a 23 year old daughter who struggles with a good amount of fear and anxiety. One aspect is this fear of men. I want to believe it's mostly irrational, but when i see these stories, i realize it's not. I don’t want this for her. I want a world where she can flourish and live without this fear. When men who don’t offend directly but don’t stand with women and girls against their brothers in Christ they benefit, however indirectly, from the comparison. When a boyfriend or husband pushes against a boundary set by a woman or girl and defends himself by saying “I’m not a Harvey or a Brock Turner” he is benefiting and hurting the woman he says he loves, the woman he has vowed before God to cherish and protect.

    Another GREAT episode. Thank you for bringing attention to this deeply disturbing case. In America, it is not really getting as much exposure as it should because we are so embroiled in politics right now. But everything you talked about, especially men not calling the police when they know this is wrong, shows how rape culture is protected and encouraged in our patriarchal society, and more specifically in the evangelical sphere where women and girls are dehumanized and demonized. Men need to process their trauma so they stop taking it out on women.

I have been thinking about "going beyond what is written" 1 Cor. 4:6 after listening to your posts and thinking about my experiences and those of my family in the church. Many have a cold, hard heart to women, girls and yes, sons and men that leads them to teach and perpetuate harmful things using Bible verses.

    Thank you for being such a powerful voice for women. Great Sex Rescue, She Deserves Better, and The Bible vs. Biblical Womanhood (which I read on your recommendation) were LIFE-CHANGING for me. I genuinely had no idea there was any other legitimate interpretation of the passages that subjugate women or even heard the terms "Complementarian" or "Egalitarian". While I was sadly taught the dehumanizing view of women that you so boldly confront, it's been incredibly freeing to understand the subjugation of women is not actually Biblical at all and that the freedom and equality of women is not "worldly" but actually much more theologically sound than what I grew up on. I've been deeply grieved to realize how many "Christian" men KNOW that there are legitimate theological arguments for the equality of women in all things that are MORE Biblical and consistent with the rest Scripture (but choose insteadthe option that maximizes their power and control rather than putting to death the flesh in humility, service, sacrificial love and mutual submission). However, it's been deeply encouraging to learn that so much of the Body of Christ is committed to the truth that in Christ there is no acceptable hierarchy of race or social status or gender! (Galatians 3:28) I'm grateful for these believers who voice and demonstrate that we reflect the image of God when we lay down our lives for eachother, honor one another above ourselves as unique and indispensable members of the Body, look to the interests of others and not only owr own, put to death selfish ambition/vain conceit that would cause us to oppress anyone with less power, use our own power to defend and care for those with less power (do justice), and love one another even as Christ Jesus loved us. That is true unity. And, I believe it's only in that kind of unity that we reflect the image of God by the 2 becoming 1 (male/female unity in marriage), the multitude of believers become 1 Body and Bride (united with one another and Christ), and I suspect is also reflective of the unity in the Trinity/Godhead. This is what Jesus prayed for us! (John 17) Thank you for being a voice that calls the Church back to that and sharing that statement of choosing to deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow the Way of Jesus. I think this Bible Project video is a great resource to share along side that to make clear how lust is, at it's heart, a result of devaluing/dehumanizing the image of God: th-cam.com/video/okFibMvn3t0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=hhLo78MbEZRpvjQr

    Yes, to Jesus being the Word of God. I come from the Word of faith movement, so if I said those things aloud, I would be hit with the line about all scriptures being inspired. Paul was likely talking about the OT when he wrote that but I digress. Ugg. It's so upsetting to me that the church has mishandled this topic for years. Giving men excuses is never the answer, but neither is shaming men for normal desire. I heard lust defined once as "desire gone mad." We need better conversations, and I am so glad you are doing this work.

    • @lisajohnson4744
      @lisajohnson4744 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      But lust is not "desire gone mad," in the sexual sense, but the intense focus on what is not even the whole person but only a part that is completely demeaned by the focus. And it is NOT normal to all mankind, and you are so right that the church has so badly mishandled the topic for so long.

    The "danger" is the lustful heart of such men: "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also Matthew 6:21." These types of men are self-absorbed and only really concerned about how THEY look and feel (I was in a relationship with an abusive, narcissistic, p*rn-addicted man, and right up until the end - as I did get out, Thank God - his issues, his emotional and mental struggles, were in relation to the SHAME and so on that HE didn't want to feel and so desperately tried to project onto me.) In MY case, it was only how my ex acted - that I got to see over time - that revealed his true character. Many, MANY men lie and come across as the sort of man they are NOT.. I have to say, it's SO incredibly difficult to heal from this, for women, especially knowing that not enough men aren't like this... If you or anyone knows of a good book that could help in healing - and not simply just fearing, distrusting, and hating men from now on in! - I'd appreciate it :)

    As an occasional viewer who has listened to a handful of your podcasts, Sheila, I wanted to thank you for your efforts to speak out against this. I can also relate to the righteous anger you and Keith are expressing. That is, especially after I myself recently heard of something which similarly struck a lot of my nerves (and although it was not on the level of what you cited, it was still very grotesque).
    If you want to know, I was unsettled to hear about this incident which recently occurred at Florida’s Liberty County High School. At one point, the principal and assistant principal (both of whom are male) were allowed to take advantage of paddling’s legality and their powerful positions, in order to entrap and coerce an 18-year-old female student named Brooklynn Daniels into taking that punishment, against her mother’s knowledge/paperwork and allegedly with predatory intent. The story got worse with every additional detail I heard about it in varying reports, and it convinced me that people within our many Christian communities need to be talking about incidents like Brooklynn’s too.
    This is why I also appreciate you making that one blog post, about the uncomfortable questions we must be willing to ask about spanking, plus some people’s willingness to tout it as “Godly” and “Biblical”. That is, since those same verses from Proverbs have also been used as justification to keep legalized the very school practice, which enabled Brooklynn’s mistreatment. Given all of that, I wondered if a follow-up to that topic, using Brooklynn’s story as a springboard, could also make for a worthwhile article or podcast. Thanks again, and God bless.

What women need now is for men to realize that they need to step up and fix this--not just saying, once again, "yes, we're all sinful except for Christ." That's not good enough. Paul told you to put away all lusts, and put them to death. How about talking about that? You are actually defaming Ever Man's Battle- when he tells the story of the car accident by staring at the woman, he is saying it was wrong and that he was trapped in lust. He was a young Christian who felt far from God and it took him a long time to realize it was because of the lust in his life.
    He in no way was condoning or making an excuse for his actions.
    His opening verse was that there must be no hint of impurity among you.
    The guy grew up around porn and it is a hard obstacle for many to overcome, including women. He is not telling people it's okay to objectify women.

    • @SheilaWrayGregoire
      @SheilaWrayGregoire  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      We never mentioned the story of the car accident. But since you bring it up, here's how he described the woman: "My eyes feasted on this banquet of glistening flesh." "goddess-like blonde, rivultes of sweat cascading down her tanned body" "ample bosom." Would Jesus call a woman a "banquet of glistening flesh"? Would Jesus describe a woman in such objectifying, soft porn terms? No. They could have told the story in a totally different way: "I lusted after a woman, and I fixated on her body instead of watching the road, and I crashed my car." But they decided to paint a graphic picture that they were obviously enjoying. That is not a safe man.
