Gideon Levy on the other hand is born and raised in Israel, and lives as well as works there for the Israeli newspaper *Haaretz.* So I guess it's fair to say that it's probably a bit closer to home for most Israelis when he's the one speaking out against the State of Israel and how it treats the Palestinian people.

I doubt you know the history, Israel had every right to exist in 1948, the invasion by the Arab league was unjustified. Jordan annexed the West bank, Egypt occupied Gaza, and Israel has to move their military perimeter for tactical topological reasons because of the threat of renewed invasions. The threat of new war, and the displaced people assisting a new invasion was largely why Israel didn't permit a right of return - in addition to the Arab nations displacing almost all their Jewish populations.
Egypt grew sick of governing Gaza so they abdicated responsibility for their mess, they never wanted Gaza to be an independent Arab state. Jordan killed thousands of Palestinians (technically Jordanians at the time) in the west bank during black September.
Arafat invented the idea of Palestine, but walked away from negotiations and started firing rockets. Israel eventually gave Gaza autonomy, and they responded with 17 years of rockets and building war tunnels, investing hard in the strategy of using human shields as a deterrent, and stealing billions of humanitarian aid.
Israel hasn't been perfect but they have been dealing with lots of feral neighbours who were always the belligerents.
