Rough Grading The Slopes And Going Over How The Laser Level Works

  • Today I start rough grading the 3:1 slopes with the loader and talking about how the laser level works. I've got all the material hogged out of the center now I'm dressing up the banks and getting the bottom of the pond to slope towards the box. I also go over the prints and try to explain the best I know on how the engineers grade stick works being in 10ths. I got over the different heights they have on the prints and show how that works with the grade stick and receiver. Thanks for watching! #EliteEarthworks #Takeuchi #gradingslopes

    Brandon... about that arm band. Women’s bowling league started last week... after 6 months of lifting iced tea cups and bingo daubers Nana felt a strain in her elbow while bowling. So, she got an elbow band.
    One of her bingo buddies told her she should have gotten one with copper in it. It is supposed to channel some internal energy from your magnetic personality to the epicenter of your cross sectional life forces and concentrate it on your strained elbow.... or something like that.
    I suggested it would more likely cause the radio in her car to pick up messages from the other side of the Milky Way....
    Did she get one? Don’t know, she doesn’t wear it when she brings me dinner in the doghouse!!

    When you setup your laser and shoot your benchmark say your rod reads 4’. Add that 4’ to the benchmark elevation and that will give you your HI or height of instrument or the elevation of the laser beam.
    From there, to cut to an elevation shown on your drawings, just subtract your HI from the elevation on the drawings and set your receiver to that calculated number on the rod. Cut till your receiver beep is right and you’re on grade.
    Then also if you want to check the elevation of any spot on site, subtract your rod reading from your HI and you’ll have the actual elevation.

    • @NealORussa
      @NealORussa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So a good way to do this would be to have your laser set and calc your HI. Then figure all your elevations to rod reading quick like I described in the 2nd paragraph. Then layout the grade lines and drive stakes. Then you can go and mark each stake for final grade if filling, or 1’ vertical offset to your cut, or dig out holes and drive hubs to grade to the top of. Then you can grade around stakes and always check grade without getting the laser back out and having to adjust the receiver height for different elevations.

      That’s a great idea, I don’t do enough of the laser work to be real up on it. That would definitely save time too. Thank you for sharing the info 👍🏻

    Starting to shape up nice. Driving on that slope reminded me of a little incident I had several years ago. Before we had a tracked machine, I backed off an embankment with the right rear wheel of a skidsteer and barrel rolled 5 times down the bank. It scared one of the home owners so bad she literally peed in her pants and had to go change clothes. Fortunately no one was hurt and no damage to the machine. Lesson learned the hard way for me. Lol. Stay safe brother.

I had my seat belt on so I just braced for the wreck and waited for it to stop rolling. When I got out of it I was covered in dirt. Lol. I went and washed off in the creek, set the Bobcat back upright, and we drug it back to the top of the hill. After about 20 mins of sitting upright to let all the fluids settle back to the bottom I fired it up and went back to work. I wouldn't want to do it again but it was a pretty exciting ride! Lol

    I did a pond inspection a few years ago and the owner had it in really good shape maintenance wise. I asked him what machine he was using to mow the steep slopes and he said that a mowing company used zeroturns. Much steeper than your site and I thought they were crazy for mowing those slopes going side to side. Wouldn't catch me trying it with my zeroturn.

    • @eliteearthworksllc
      @eliteearthworksllc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yikes yeah there is no way I would mow that stuff on a zeroturn. I use to run front mount Grasshopper mowers when I mowed commercially and some of these were a huge pain with those. pro tip....set your rotating laser so the beam is about 3 and a half to 5 feet above your benchmark grade, and set your indicator on the topmost part of the tenths rod...in other words, collapse it down all the way and pull out just the smallest part of the rod enough to attach the indicator to. that way you can go around your jobsite shooting grades with out constantly unscrewing the indicator and attaching it back to the front of the rod....your rod is marked on the back side as well and if you try what i say you'll be able to just pull out the rod and measure by reading the BACKSIDE of the grade rod...sounds complicated but once you get it you'll understand how easy it can be...good luck and nice work

    Unsolicited opinion: nice grading work on your part Brandon. The engineers have designed something that will be difficult and expensive to maintain, forever. Those slopes look much too steep for any riding lawnmower, maintenance companies will want extra to mow there. And it probably won't ever look like anyone maintains it, it will look messy. The business owner in spending a truckload of money on this project ... and he'll continue to spend extra on upkeep. Perhaps he should ask you for a quote to rip rap the inclines, it will reduce maintenance and look much better. And perhaps a quote to landscape fabric the flat area and cover it with a layer of stone. He's spent a lot of money, now he really needs to spend more. Good luck.

What you do is measure out 3' Drop a rock use your hand level and with another tape shoot to the top of the slope. A tape with feet in tenths instead of inches is an easy way to waste a lot of lumber

      That is probably true

      Ry Jones... I’ve done that... was making a chest of drawers out of walnut. My miter saw tape was in 1/16”.... I grabbed a tape measure and jotted down dimensions for drawer front sizes... it was in 1/10” increments.... the best lumber... book matched grain... all from the same tree... irreplaceable... fortunately... 1/10” is bigger than 1/16” so I was able to salvage it.
      Oh yeah, the tape measure went to my 7yr old grandson to measure how tall his chickens grew!

      Sassafras Valley glad you were able to salvage the project. I think those tapes should be a different color or something.
