It needs to be in a sealed container.
Black powder burns very rapidly, releasing a lot of gases
In a container, like a cardboard tube, this builds up pressure that pops the container like a balloon 🎈
That's where the explosion comes from
Gun barrels channel the explosion out through one end (the barrel)
But the pressure is built up in the small space between the musket ball and end the for packed barrel

Sugar is a naturally exothermic substance that contains a lot of carbon atoms in a fairly compact formation. Look up video of mixing sugar and sulfuric acid and you’ll get a better idea as to why it has an effect

With black powder, you need to contain an enough amount of it in a receptacle (box, barrel, can, bag...) to obtain an explosion.
Without that, the gas quantity realized by the burning black powder will be not enough in time to detonating.

@TheBoltMaster Well if youre speaking about recent history, Saltpeter is Potassium Nitrate. But what Senku used was Calcium Nitrate. Calcium Nitrate is a Saltpeter used before the 16th century. So you are both right and wrong. Nowadays no one uses Calcium Nitrate for making gunpowder.
