It's a silver wash on the piezo ( p- et - zo ) material as you cannot solder to the ceramic crystaline material barium titanate . You need shielded multi strand wire for the out , even twisted pair commonly found is insufficient for shielding purposes but better than single strand equipment wire . Multi strand as fine and high a count as possible for signal transfer . Mine comes from an old Farfisa Organ and I choose the colour to match the guitar body . But you can buy the shielde stuff stripped out of aircraft over there , with the fireproof braid cover just in case your playing is really hot 🔥. Happy New Year !
Coating the entire back of the pot is overkill. I wish there was commentary on what wattage of iron used and other choices for materials, but other than that a great video, thanks for uploading!
High frequencies travel along the surface of wires. This is why audio cable is made of lots of fine wires; to provide more surface. Even if you like working with solid wire, it is better to use multi-strand.
Big Daddy, I don't play guitar, in fact I have no sense of rhythm, but I love to build stuff. I would like to build guitars and amps to give away as gifts. Could you do a video on building an amp with say a 4 1/2" and a 6 " speaker in it? Electronics is one place where I less than excel. Is there somewhere that you have a list of parts for the piezo wiring? I love the fact that you did a demo video because I can follow that, but although I am able to follow construction (buildings) blueprints, I can't read or follow electronics blueprints. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Great vid! Any tips on tinning the back of the pots? I seem to have cooked one because I can't seem to get the solder to take to the pot surface. Did you prep the surface by etching with sandpaper? Could mine have coating that needs to be removed. And what type of solder did you use? Mine is a rosin core but may be getting old if there's such a thing as a shelf life for solder. I have one more pot left and want to nail it this time. Thank You!

Question, how will it pickups register the strings if they aren't part of the circuit. [Don't you have to put a final wire leading from the grounds of the volume pot to the bridge completing the circuit through the strings? Btw, great video it help with how to do the switch wiring! 0w0
Hey man, I built a lap steel by myself. But I got a problem with the humbucker. Can you make a video with a humbucker instead the piezos? My system is the same with a 3 way switch, vol and tone. Thanks. By the way... the pickup is a mighty might motherbucker.
Any suggestions for getting rid of ground hum?. I have checked all solder joints with an ohm meter. They are good. Is there some kind of noise cap I could install. It works well just humming until I touch the cable end. I tried several cables, and I can plug in all 3 of my guitars in with no noise.
To get rid of that hum you basically need to ground the strings, that's most likely the issue here. Does the humming also stop if you touch the strings or the saddle? On electric guitars this is usually sorted by grounding the saddle or string holder. For a cbg you can basically do that in a couple of different was, either run a cable through the body and connect it/sold it to your saddle. I have a wooden saddle on one cbg so naturally I couldn't ground that one. I had to run a cable out the bottom of my cbg to connect it to my "string holder", ie the rivets that my strings run through. I am now ground hum free! Many cbg workers don't do this, might be because the playing style usually sorts out these issues, ie lots of playser lean their right hand on the bridge and/or mute the strings anway which eliminates the noise.
Thanks for the DIY tutorial. I have a set up for 2 Piezo's - and I'm wondering if there is a rule about where to place two piezo's in a CBG build for best effect. I could wire just the one, but somebody recomended I use two - and never told me where the best placement would be. I know with one piezo its best to set it under the soundboard under the bridge near the top string, but thats all I know. Any advice on the second piezo placement? - this is my 1st CBG build.
best way to do a stick is to route out a slot in the body right under the saddles. magnetic pups are easily installed but they do feedback easier. just something to be aware of, you probably wouldn't wanna throw a set of blackouts in one of these lol.

+Moby Dave 250k or 500k pots are common values for guitars. 500 for the volume 250 for the tone. common cap values are 0.022uF or 0.047uF. you can google for guitar wiring diagrams really easily if you need a visual. ;)
could you show us how to wire a hot magnetic sound hole pickup and a "under the bridge " piezo together, using one jack? acoustic guitar. can you just wire the passive piezo to the jack? i realize doing it this way you loose the ability to blend the pickups, but the magnetic pickup being hot, would be the dominate, to me this is how you would blend it anyway. is this possible?

The concept is exactly the same. just wire the controls the same but instead of piezos run the lead from the humbucker to the switch, and the ground to the volume pot.

FYI tip. Always use shielded wire. The less noise, the more fun! Also the XLR (Balanced version is amazing for signal to noise ratio.

you'd have both running at all times. but you solder it both onto the right prong of the volume pot. and the ground to the back of the pot.

.047 is a standard tone cap value. You could even try .022
