@HortonKansas- Well put about CBGs! This guitar was built by Bruce Trapps of Devil Guitars Tasmania, out of Australian Corrugated Iron. It is a beautiful guitar, and sounds even batter than it looks!
I built my first two CBG's for my granddaughters for Christmas and they turned out rather well for my first attempts. I had not discovered your your how to videos and had to correct mistakes and with some advise from a local luthier it all turned out well. I am now addicted to building and am very thankful that I discovered your how to vids . You ROCK Justin ! I've now just subscribed to your channel . Peace !
Thanks, Justin. It seems that I have to watch this video almost every time I build a CBG. Sometimes I get lucky and get it right the first time, but that is rare. You videos are always very helpful. I loved the tin roof guitar. Cudos to Bruce (cigarboxtriplestring) for building it. He does some beautiful work.
This video was fantastic! I just bought a lovely CBG with poor intonation. I needed to apply all of the principles and techniques you introduced and in no time, my CBG was perfectly in tune! Many, many thanks!
Thanks so much Justin and Bruce! I've had to learn these lessons the hard way with my first fret job being too off and then I took fret wire with the tang ground off and hair tied it to the neck and got it in tune, well sort of, but the crazy angles of each fret! I finally realized my nut was too high and that the bridge needed some angle, but in this video, and I'm so glad I watched it, you show how by lowering each wire at the nut you can get the first frets in tune! I'm super excited about this. Thanks so much. By the way, your viral video of you playing that shovel guitar got me started in this wonderful passion! Thanks again! Bart
Great video, definitely answered some questions, thanks! I just saw Justin and that bad ass sheet metal guitar at the Pennsylvania CBG festival. Amazing show man, love how you incorporate some educational stuff into our act, you had the crowd mesmerized all around. My dads been building for a couple years, i love playing em, and i'm about to try my first build(s), so thanks for the tips!
Omg i have the high nut issue on a 4string i made , i remade it several times and couldn't work it out. I gave up on it and it's sitting in the corner of dissapointments in my room but ill give it another crack now, thanks so much for posting this!
thanks for your help....you have inspired me to make my own...mine is all metal accoutic electric four string tenor banjo made out of a 5 quart saucepan....still workin on it..your videos are extremely helpful👍
OMG I followed this method on my Banjo I never heard it sound like that rings like a church bell my Intonation is bang on I bought a micro diamond file for the fix Awesome send me a mail box I`ll get you one THANKS SO MUCH .
"I hope this was helpful" - Perfect! Thank you so much. This was one my concerns. I want to make a playable CGB! My 10 year old son is gifted and talented but doesn't think you can support a family as a musician. But he just can't resist anything I pick up and start playing - and he plays it all way better than I ever will (: He plays by ear but is also taking piano lessons to learn theory.
Great video, my only issue is when you are numbering the strings. The string closest to the floor is the first string and then the second string would be the next one above it and so on. You seem to be counting from the bass string down, which can be confusing, especially to newbies. Thanks, I really dig your playing.
Hi Justin, Video very helpful, just made my first CBG style guitar. Biscuit tin, I used a piece of railway sleeper for the neck. Could you explain or do a video on setting intonation on a fret less guitar. Love your music and video,s. I got a DVD of you on playing cigar box guitars,it has been the ducks nuts. Thanks Justin W
Hey Justin ....When measuring the scale are you measuring from behind the nut to the front of the bridge ... or center to center ... By the way ... I'm a Huge Fan ... Thanks Robert
I am planing a resonator using a cone.... how do I set the intonation on that? I guess I have to be very accurate when I cut the hole for the cone? or can I put a tunomatic bridge on the biscuit? any help would be awesome!
Great video, Question, I followed all your instructions but when checking intonation at the nut I fret the 1st fret it goes up a whole key like from E to F, any suggestions,I would appreciate your expert advise. Thank You, God Bless.
patrick west Great question. There are no sharps or flats between E & F or B & C. This makes things a little confusing, but thats just the way the tonal system is set up. Therefore, when you have an open E string, and you fret it on the first fret, the first fret note will be F, even though you have only moved the pitch up a half step. The same is the case for B & C. All other notes will become sharp if you move up one fret (e.g. F becomes F# - G becomes G# - A becomes A#) Hope that explains it, and thanks for watching!
Pretty cool and informative video. But can you explain what to do when the 12 fret harmonic and it's fingered fret don't match, as I am experiencing now. What do I do to get them to match?
I'm planning on making a set bridge (haven't figured out the plan exactly). I might put in a chrome hard tail. Can I keep it un-glued, set the intonation and then glue it when it's in the right place?
oldguitargal That is a good way of setting the intonation at the bridge, even if you are using a set bridge. Another way to make sure that you can assure accurate intonation on a set bridge is to use a bridge that has adjustable saddles. If you are looking for a great selection of 3- & 4-String bridges with adjustable saddles, check out MRWS Instruments. They are a great source for CBG parts, and are great people!
LaMar L It is a clip-on chromatic tuner called a Snark. Several brands make clip-on tuners, but I have had great experiences with the Snark brand specifically.
Great video Guys! With your knowledge I was hoping you might help me locate a guitar part that I'm having trouble finding...even with Google. I need just one Nickle Plated Brass 10" Chicken Foot Cover Plate for a resonator guitar. I was Sure thatI could just Google it and buy as many as I need but it's proven differently. If you guys can put me on the trail I would definately appreciate your help! Tnaks a Lot, mike Columbia, Kentucky USA
Doctordendro until they start producing inverted globes, then it is...haha we love your continent because it represents all the things we wish we had become.
My first ever ukulele was a hand-me-down from the 70s and it's action was WILD. It had the worst intonation I've ever played with. Playing a D on a perfectly tuned C string came out something like 30 cents sharp. Horrible. I have a better one now.

One of the most informative short videos I have seen. Really helpful. Thanks a million guys.

That was VERY helpful
Thanks very much for breaking it down to simpler steps, Justin and Bruce! Excellent looking guitars, Bruce!
Just discovered this. What a wonderful explanation of how it all comes together. Thanks so much.
Thanks You taught me how to do my first full string set up. Thanks again for what you contribute to our industry. You are a generous man.
This applies to all guitars. Good video and information. Thanks. What makes this video even better is the flotation bridge in formation. Great job.😎
Very interesting. Learned something about nut action. 👍 🤔

Thanks for the info on this video! I never knew about checking the first few frets like that. Learn something new every day!!!☺

What do you do if it is still sharp on the first frett but it is that low it is buzzing on the open G. Please help.🙏🙏🙏
Thanx, this was a dig help.
3 hearts !
JJ, very informative thank you, bye'eeee..
Cool box.
Secrets revealed! Thank you!

Superb, finally got that intonation stuff ! Big thanks.
What's the different in australian wood?
Question, if you file the string groove too deep Can that cause fret buzz? Or should I not worry about that?
Hey Justin ....When measuring the scale are you measuring from behind the nut to the front of the bridge ... or center to center ... By the way ... I'm a Huge Fan ... Thanks Robert
Very nice

Justin explains how to resolve this problem in the 2nd half of the video. It's to do with adjusting the bridge position.

What do you prefer?a 4 string cigarbox or a 3 string?
What tuner are you using to tune the CBG?
I'm loving this bought some boxes now to move on.

Thank you sir bought one

Justin has Martian Fingers...that's not fair...
you must be very careful with this bridge setup, as it can easily be knocked out of place, thereby destroying your tuning, correct?
Only an american would think that tasmania is at the bottom of the world.
Doctordendro until they start producing inverted globes, then it is...haha we love your continent because it represents all the things we wish we had become.
Terry Jenner Hi Terry, what about New Zealand, Argentina or Antarctica? Regards.
Why wasn't I surprised that you're 8' tall?😂

So, I'm just filing the nut, and that will fix the intonation on my 12th fret?
