Just moved to a new dairy farm as of 1st of June, the runoff goes straight on to bush stacked with possums,I brought 10 traps they are on there way in the mail,I think I'll get only one chance this Tuesday nite,I'm going to use the money to buy more traps, I have 3 bush blocks full of possums,I have watched all your videos,I want to go from full time dairy farming the transition into full time possum trapping by watching your videos, thanks heaps for your out of the box thinking on the whole 9-5 working as I'm 5-5 7 days a week haha.thanks heaps great advice.
Enjoying the videos, improving our catch rate around the farm. Our son is into your videos as he is into it for pocket money. So thanks for sharing your knowledge.
That's great to read, it's good to know that your catch rate is going up and that your son is out and about making a dollar or two from possuming. Thanks for getting in touch.
Great to see some more videos that you have taken the time to make .they are always informative and interesting great stuff Bryan .oh and I like the country too keep up the good work and enjoy the bush most of all
Hi Bryan Great video here are some points I would make. When nailing your staple into a tree nail it horizontal easier to pull out I put a staple through my chain staple to pull it out with so put no stress on the chain. I have been taught to put your trap one hand width from the tree so that rats jumping up the tree to get your prefed do not land in the trap and set it off. I also flour on 4 sides of the tree so possums coming in any direction see the blaze and come over, often I will hang a piece of core flute off a branch 6 to 8 feet in front of my trap site to attract the possums. You showed a possum with poor back fur this is often caused by high numbers and wet nest sites. When using Cyanide I add almond meal to my prefed as it has a cyanide smell and covers the cyanide smell also always use the same lure as the cyanide you are using. Great to see someone using blue flower pots blue is a very basic colour and one that possums see. I put 3 small baits of cyanide so one possum does not eat a lot and leave only scraps for a possum to get a sub lethal dose. I saw you use white toilet paper found you can buy brown and covers up better. These are not criticisms more to give other some ideas. You hammer is one that I taught a number of people to use it is called a dry wall hammer did you get off C & L.R Pat from the NZ Feral Action Network
Hi Pat, thanks for the great advice. I enjoy learning from other trappers as it makes the game even more enjoyable. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods and thanks again for the tips.
hey Bryan I am looking at buying 10 more traps..so I will end up having 30 traps.for traps, lure, staples etc how big a bag size (litres) would you reccomend
Sounds like you are getting quite a serious operation going. I used to use a 50 litre pack which held 50 traps, lure, hammer etc. I use a frame now with a plastic container strapped to it which works really well (traps don't dig into your back). Probably a 40-litre pack would serve you well.
Hey Bryan & Sue another great video, also just wondering if I should just tack out a skin to hang on my wall? Or is it worth salting and tanning. Hope you are doing well 👍
Great vids...have you ever used Tims traps if so what would you use for the bait , Im just trying to get rid of the critters that seem to have me surrounded at night and love to to run round the roof , apple works well but looking for something that will stay on for a bit longer , my daughter tells me off for stealing her apples for the trap :)
Thanks Bryan for all this valuable info. Hope you guys are well... been missing your vids but appreciate how much time filming, editing etc takes. Moving to Ruapehu area soon, if I see you out and about its my shout! Cheers.
Thanks, Nate, and good as gold. We have been chasing ferrets, stoats and weasels for the last few months over in the Taranaki. I hope to get around to doing a video soon. Would be great to meet you - if you see a blue Hilux D300 with feral control sign written on the sides make sure you flag us down. You'll have a blast in the Ruapehu district - there are some excellent skins about.
@@BryanRitchie-Gonebush brilliant! I'll look out for the hilux and sign. Look forward to seeing the video too. I'm curious now about stoats and weasels in any prospective financial equation. BTW, love your stories on the website, what a life! See you soon! N
Hi Aidan, thanks for getting in touch. We are both well and busy trapping in the Taranaki, all going to plan I will start uploading again soon. Stay well.
Your hidden trap set looks the same as the guy who produced the dvd's called ,The trapper comes clean' This is what I learnt to trap with plus a book called ' Commercial opossum hunting' by D J Moresby. Fantastic watching and reading. The fella in the dvd's drank water from a stream for 3 months that had been sprayed with some some kinds of poisons and it physically stuffed him, he crashes round in the bush with 2 leg braces on and is still doing it, was told to go home and die, really was amazing to watch.
Hi Scott - I used to have the dvd's - learned a great deal from him and Denis Moresby along with any other books and dvd's I could get my hands on. The guy in the DVD (Mark Hutchings) I think his name is - is a real character. The great thing about the bush and possuming is that you never arrive and there is always so much more you can learn from others (and the bush itself). Another good book is Possum Hunting in New Zealand by Graeme Marshall. I loved that book as a young fella. Thanks for taking the time to get in touch.
Nice to See you Brian, Sent you a few emails over the past couple years. But no reply. Any way finally got skinny down to 190 lbs lost 53 pounds so far and still losing weight. Rosemarie had a Great Granddaughter born last year. Just had a huge 1st birthday party. I have been going back and forth to our land in Florida making the huge 50 ft by 50 ft building into a Home. Later will build two apartments inside for the Grand kids, they want to go to college Or you folks call it UNI. I think. Southern charm, warm friendly people. Well just wanted to let you know Rosemarie are alive and well so glad to see you are too. God Bless you my friends!!!
Hi Jonathan, great to hear from you and congratulations on your fruitful exercise regime and the new grandchild. Would be keen to see photographs of your progress on your Florida property. I am not sure how I missed your emails. Just have to answer my phone, will continue this next message.
Please give our love to Rosemarie. We often remember you both in our conversations. We have purchased a bit of land out in the sticks and are living off grid and loving it. Truck is parked up and we are living in the shed. Suits us just fine. Thanks again for getting in touch.
Hey Bryan And Sue! Are you still using the bee keeper email? Don't want to say it here in public or drop me an email at my business email jonathandexter1968@gmail.com as it's already public yes lots of pictures. And will fill you in on the diet. Looking forward to hearing from you there.
Hi Bryan, just wondering if you could advise me on possum trapping around banks peninsula..? Just bought some traps and have been told there is some good areas there. Any help would be much appreciated. While I’m not working at sea, I live in motorhome like you guys and love it. Would be nice to bump into you guys one day 😎
Thanks for your kind words. Glad you enjoy the bush and hunting like I do. IYou sound like you'll make a good trapper - please let me know how you get on. Thanks for watching.
Hay Bryan, I live in Thames and I'm a keen young possum trapper I have traps but would love to shot possums on a block. I love your videos and would like to no how I could get a block to shoot possums please. Cheers Caleb
Hi Bryan Been trying to remember which clip you mentioned a book written by someone so I can see if there is a book on Trademe or maybe our public library but cannot remember who or what it is called. Please can you help me out .
Cheers Bryan. Is it worth prefeeding for a couple of nights before putting leghold traps out? I don't use cyanide, keep up the good work. There's a few deer in those parts
Hi Steve, when trapping you don't really gain augment deal from pre-wedding (except for one exception which I hope to talk about in another video). Just get your traps out and if you suspect trap shyness try a few hidden sets.
Hi Bryan, When you put the trap it in a 'path' of the possums, don't you need to indicate there is a trap to prevent someone from stepping on it? Kind regards
Hi Joris - good question. The trap I set in the video is in an area where people seldom, if ever, go. But if a person stands on a trap it won't harm them (unless they somehow managed to just catch their toes). I've caught my hand in traps many times but apart from the occasional black fingernail they don't really do much harm.
Bryan if your up around the Waikato after October I would love to take you to my spot and get some first hand knowledge from you.ill keep you posted on my progress between now and then.
Naike that's cool I know where that is,you could try one of my future spots from there,it's in raglan on the back road to kaufia probably spelt wrong.philips road towards the harbour.went out last night got 4 possums out of 10 traps, was only 110 grams of fur, would take 40 possums for a kilo at that.but never mind they were small.thanks for the reply,I reset check tomorrow but the its calving time.so won't be out and about till September.good luck out there to everyone.
There were thousands of hares around Waiouru. They have been culling them from helicopter and 4wd s over the last few years which has knocked their numbers back a bit.
Hi Bryan, well....I am beginning to agree with you that fur recovery without meat recovery maybe the way I will have to go, as meat recovery is meaning more expenses = need to buy freezer/s, space required in vehicle for carcasses, weight as shipping cost or cost of me driving frozen animals to processor. And only $2.50 kg. Plus compliance work. It's hard. With hares I maybe better off keeping the meat for myself! Speaking of hares - have you seen many hares in your travels??? For possums, poison might also be my best tool - I think (for me). What is your opinion/s. Best regards, Andrew
Sorry, I meant shooting possums as my best tool (where permitted) instead of poisoning. I don't like poisons (that is just me) and too much cost to get certified plus compliance. For hares if only MPI would make it easier to sell them for human consumption! Regards, Andrew
Saw your reply below regarding hares around Waiouru - that's incredible and what a waster to cull them by helicopter and I bet that is DOC spending taxpayers hard earned cash again.... Also made an error in my reply earlier today. I think it is $1.80 or $1.90 per kg for possums for meat recovery for petfood. That's good if you've got a big chest freezer and use a Quad and 4WD and so on...it does pull the value of a possum up to almost $12 per animal. But for me I see fur recovery from possums as easier right now.
Yep, it is a lot of extra effort for very little return to get the carcasses to a buyer (which is a crying shame as it is such a waste). Cyanide and a plucker are a great combination if you can snag a few good possum blocks (just make sure they haven't had cyanide through them in the last couple of years because if it isn't done properly you can end up with a poison shy population. There are quite a few hares in the defense area at Waiouru but getting access to them might be a bit of a mission. I would talk to the surrounding landowners and see if you can shoot the hares on their farms/stations. Once people get to know and trust you word will get round pretty quick and the worlds your oyster.
Hi Bryan, well I have decided to stick with meat + fur recovery as both together is good money. The petfood processor is Zach Howarth of Pestpro Katikati and I really nice person and very helpful. I will soon move back up to Taupo-Rotorua area. Definitely I will visit the stations around Waiouru. Many thanks for that. Cheers, Andrew
Does anyone know if possums kill cats? We have 3 that i can see everynight right at the top of our drive less than a metre from our house. I'm terrified that they will attack or kill my cats?
Hi Alanas, no, they won't kill your cat. If you can get your hands on a cage trap you can catch the possums with no danger to your cats, use a piece of apple as bait.
Hi,my name is Chris and i would like to ask u abt the Possums trap!! There are a bunch of Possums behind my backyard and i’d like to buy the trap can u please reply to me ASAP!
Hi Chris. Sorry about the delay in getting back too you - we are out in the sticks and the internet is a bit of a luxury. If you are living out in the country I would recommend that you get some leghold traps - you can't beat them for possum control. If you are in town you probably won't be able to use them as you could end up catching the neighbours moggie and the world will come crashing down on your head if someone complains. You can email me at beepete@gmail.com if it helps.

ive got a piece of foam in my pack so the traps don't dig in as much
Good plan. I used to use a thin bit of ply but foam should do the trick as long as it doesn't get wet.
Hey Bryan & Sue another great video, also just wondering if I should just tack out a skin to hang on my wall? Or is it worth salting and tanning. Hope you are doing well 👍
Hi Bryan, love the videos. Is there an archive of your website? It seems to be down.
Great knowledge. Thanks for sharing brother.
All good Rangi, glad you enjoyed it.
Enjoyed your video thanks.
Awesome informative videos thanks Bryan! Just getting into here in the deep south. Keep them coming! Cheers
Thanks Justin will do. Great place the South Island - enjoy the awesome scenery.
Thanks for the videos Bryan.
Thanks for watching and your feedback.
Excellent videos! Encouraged to do what you do.
Thanks Caleb. It;s a great life and there are plenty of opportunities out there to enjoy it.
Enjoyed the day out Bryan :)
Thanks, Malc. I appreciate you watching it.
Is there a bounty on the possums? Also is there much scope for working in this line of work if u was to travel to N.Z?

Hey Bryan are u guys still out and about trapping haven't seen any recent vids in a while also some 3rd parts Neve got uploaded that I have been waiting to see
Gidday Brian were would I get a hammer that you use in your video footage Im after a good hammer
Thanks Brian
Hi Aaron It's called a dry wall or gib hammer. Found a second one here www.tools2go.co.nz/2nd-/230-estwing-drywall-hammer.html for $29.99
nice
Cheers Ryan. Looking forward ti your next uploads.
yeah I'm not sure if I'll be able to make possum videos cos I have hockey on Friday and am doing a day hike on Saturday but am definitely doing an eel catch and cook
what do you use to pull the staples out if your hammer doesn't have a claw
The blade of the hammer used to have a bit of a recess in it that was ideal for pulling staples, it snapped off a while back. I need to get the angle grinder out and cut another one. In the meantime I take a claw hammer when I'm pulling traps.
okay
so close to 600
It's been a long slow process. Your videos are doing really well - well done.
Bryan Ritchie thanks have you seen my newest video?
Yes I have. Your productions are getting better and better. Come August those pines should really start drawing the possums.
Bryan Ritchie yeah there is some pretty big forestry blocks in my area
Ryan The Leprechaun I was the 600th sub 👍
possum survival here: th-cam.com/video/Zy_UgxPkPi0/w-d-xo.html
how can you call yourself a trapper and not know how to anchor a trap to the ground, it's something you should have seen when you were on the internet
when you uploading next video
Ended up selling my current camera gear. Will probably buy another less expensive camera.
Bryan Ritchie okay
Mississippi o ppossum don't look like that ! Our look different from y'all !
Reckon ours might be a bit better looking.
