It's so true, so in my family in order to fight inflation in the underworld, my mum and I would buy gold foiled paper and fold them into sycee shape and burn them for my late grandfather.
These sycee paper are used as solid gold in the underworld, because its labor intensive and way more traditional. My mum have to fold hundreds of these every year for my grandpa, she also buy hand folded ones from old ladies in the village.

Notice at 3:03 both the fake US Dollars and British Pound have lots of 8s on their serial numbers. That's no coincidence. 8 is pronounced "Bā" in Chinese, which has a similar pronunciation to "Fā", which means gaining wealth. It's also why 8 is considered a lucky number in China.

In Greek mythology it's not about bribing Charon, though. Charon couldn't be bribed, but you had to pay for the transport into the underworld (yes, not even death was free in ancient Greece). Charon refused to transport those dead that weren't burried (and therefore didn't have a coin, which was part of the funeral rites). They had to wait for 100 years as shadows to regain their honour or something like that, before Charon would allow them to cross into the afterlife.

This video made me remember a short story that I read when I was younger. It was part of a horror story anthology.
The guy in the story was having nightmares about his mother crying in hell, poor and destitute. So he burns hell money for her. But he continued to have nightmares, no matter how much he burned. Then, during one of the nightmare, he asked her what he needed to do. His mother asked to burn real money for her. Naturally, he debated about it. But at this point, he would do anything so he burned real money for her. That night, he dreamed of his mother driving around in a car, rich.
Disclaimer: 1) I was like 10 when I read the story so I don’t remember the name of the book. The gist of the story had just reminded with me because of the unique premise.

I have a few Chinese bills that I have always believed to be hell notes, however I cannot find anything that looks like them online to find out! Either way, this video was really fun since I knew generally what they were, but had no details. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks!

Throw it away quickly! Very unlucky! If someone gives you ghost money either he is a ghost or he is cursing you!

Thanks for doing this :) as a kid I remember stealing notes and keeping it so I could show it to my friends and flex having a thousand dollars lol. We also burn paper silver and gold ingots and there's some sheets of faces that are supposed to be servants. Me and my siblings sometimes snuck letters and origami into the pile thinking it would go through to our ancestors

I thought i was cheeky when i found there's paper debit & credit cards to burn for the ancestors, then a few months later i found out that there's some place who burn literal paper version of ATM or bank buildings like "here ancestors, print your own money and deposit other's in yours"

I actually burned these things when I visited my grandpa's grave who had passed away back in December. It was probably the first time I saw fire in real life besides the usual gas stove my mom has.

I found one when I was shopping with my family for the QingMing festival, I've thrown one into the basket with 18 zero.
Really common to see them in Malaysia, Singapore and sometime Indonesia with the hyperinflated one.

I remember being taken to the local temple by the ocean. Grandma always took the family there to burn some hell money for my granddad when he passed
But I used to just sit around with my little sister eating oreos. Parents were worried we'd get sick from inhaling the ashes

Cool! I found one of these printed to look like a US $100 bill on the floor at my local library, and thought it was meant to be counterfeit until I saw the pink Chinese characters printed over the reverse.

    0:32 Oh no it’s war!
Just a quick explanation, if the blue part is on top, the country is currently ok and peaceful. But if you flip the flag over and the red part is on the top, WARRRRRRRRR!

These! When I went to China and visited my grandmother we burnt a whole bunch of paper gold for her.
Oh and we also had to wear real gold, go out at 4am ish, carry lighters, and be quiet. I don't know what those are about though.

    Serious 1920s vibes here.
I remember my great grandmother telling me how they used the overinflated German low denomination bills to start the fire in the oven.

    • @Hand-in-Shot_Productions
      @Hand-in-Shot_Productions 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Didn't know that Papiermarks were used to start oven fires! I knew they were used for children's building blocks, note paper, and other purposes in which they would be more useful as than as actual money, but I didn't know that they were used as fire-starters too!
Thanks for the history! These Hell Notes really resemble Papiermarks in this instance, both in the absurd hyperinflation and the usage!
