I was a recently a inpatient in the orthopaedic unit, and my roommate has Wilson’s disease. In addition to the neurological aspects of the disease, it had attacked her prosthetic hip and she was on her fourth artificial hip when I met her.

A copper deficiency can also cause major issues issues. A weird possible cause of copper deficiency is secondary to improper denture adhesive use. Some denture adhesives contain zinc which interrupts copper absorption. So if you ever have a patient with a copper deficiency then check and see if they have an ill fitting denture. If so, refer to a prosthodontist for assessment. That will fix the source of the zinc toxicity, but you will still need to manage the copper deficiency.

Never heard about copper buildup before. A friend of mine is in the hospital now for problems with calcium levels after a thyroid removal, which I didn't know was possible either.

Sounds like they also removed, stunned, or damaged some of her parathyroids. There are 4 of them and they regulate calcium. They are located directly behind, and sometimes somewhat intertwined with, the thyroid gland.

The trouble with Wilson's Disease literally no one wants to help you, I nearly died a very horrible death (I honestly wouldn't wish what I went through on my worst enemy) with all the typical symptoms and blood tests showing it and not one specialist or doctor helped me. I ended up having to buy my own chelators online to save my own life. I even now have a report from a genetic consultant that says I carry the two pathogenic genes for WD and yet still no one helps while I still live on a knife edge each day.

Last time I checked the mutation in my atp7b chromosome would still be there regardless of liver transplant. If a patient with Wilson’s came in (and person didn’t know and docs didn’t know) and got a new liver, it’d just be a fresh new liver for the Wilson’s to ruin. The root problem is still there. As of this comment there is some promising gene therapy trials on going
Also I disagree on looking for KF rings being the most definitive way to test for Wilson’s. A genetic test to see if one had the mutation on their atp7b chromosome would be the most definitive. Though while the KF rings do indicate Wilson’s disease. They only show up once there’s enough copper has built and has been deposited in the eyes and they also fade away with chelation therapy.
