Nothing better than a good time in the beautiful spring forest. Such a lovely watch ❤

You’re absolutely right about that Eventyrsoren. Had I not already been over two miles into my hike I’d probably have turned back because of the high winds. Falling limbs and blown over trees are a real danger. But the day turned out to be nice later on.
      Thanks so very much.
      Take care my friend.

The falls were beautiful. Great footage of the wildflowers, too.

Thank you John. I was hoping for better water flow but there’s no way to be disappointed with the waterfall when it’s like this. The spring wildflowers are almost gone now. We have a gorgeous display of wildflowers in the fall too. I actually prefer them to the spring flowers.
      Take care!

Absolutely Scott, it’s really a gorgeous waterfall! The area in front of it is flat, mossy and dotted with wildflowers. It’s just a beautiful place to be. You just want to sit there and relax for a long time.
      I appreciate it much!
      Take care and stay safe.

Thank you so very much Sue, as always. For a bit of historical context, this hike is almost entirely on land once owned by John “Hawk” Smith. Calista Falls is on Bill Branch, named after Bill Smith I believe. John operated several coal mines up and down the river. The one I located is almost certainly one of those. There’s a lot of evidence of other mines in the hillsides along the river. I’m going to try to locate more of those someday.

I sure appreciate it ervinslens. I’m definitely not a focal point in any of my videos. It’s all about what I see! Big South Fork blesses me with an almost endless supply of amazing features to visit. I’m very fortunate to live here and to bring these features to those who are interested. This is home to me!
      Take care and be safe!

There’s no better way to spend a day! Calista Falls is a top 5 waterfall in Big South Fork and that’s saying something! I have to get back down there with better water flow!
      Tack care and be safe!

Thanks Nicole. It is a wonderful waterfall for sure.
I’m on the mend now, I’ll be taking some short hikes soon, well… I kind of cheated a bit and hiked a couple of miles last weekend… It was nice! 😀

Whenever I get to a beautiful waterfall, or an amazing view it's hard for me to leave. I'll stay as long as possible.

That’s exactly how I feel at a nice waterfall or a great overlook! It’s just hard to leave. I just want to sit there and keep taking it all in. That’s the greatest stress relief known to mankind!
Take care, stay safe and healthy.

I wonder what all those wires were for. There’s one light bulb in the things head. And the battery charger?
There’s got to be several more old mines in those hillsides. Mr. John Smith was a busy man.

You can take a short cut to the falls on the John Smith trail

    • @papawinthewoods
      @papawinthewoods  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I could have taken that route but I’ve had to avoid steep climbs for sometime now. I’ve had some heart issues for a couple of years. I do fine on level ground but the uphills are terrible. Since posting this video I have been in the hospital, had a procedure and am in recovery mode now. I’m hoping for some major improvement soon. I’m really wanting to be ready for the fall and off trail season.
Thanks Lance. Hopefully next time I’ll take the shorter route. The wildflowers along the river are beautiful though!
      Take care and be safe.
We’ll probably meet out on the trail someday.
