To answer the question as to what makes Gnosticism attractive in modernity is, in my personal experience, that it is aligned with Bernardo Kastrup's Analytic Idealism where Consciousness is fundamental. It also removes any notion of a "punishment" in the "hereafter." Lastly, it empowers the individual whether or not the individual transcends mentally or spiritually while still in the mortal coil. This goes beyond hope and faith, neither of which are fundamental in the Gnostic tradition but rather act as stimulants and are shed once the Gnosis of God is achieved. Near-death experiencers are essentially the contemporary Gnostics.

Thanks John - I found this helpful.
I will explore Bernardo Kastrup - can you recommend a starting point? Phil

@@philshanklandLife You might enjoy watching a few TH-cam videos by Rupert Spira. He goes into the nature of consciousness from a spiritual view.
Additionally, "A Course In Miracles" approaches spirituality and consciousness from a religious perspective without any notion of the standard Christian dogma of being born a sinner. It bridges the gap between fundamental Christianity and Spirituality.
My initial mentoring came from J. Krishnamurti in the book "Freedom From The Known."

Thanks John, well-observed. Yes direct experience is central to the Gnostics and April comments that faith was also an important part of the tradition. They sought to include both.

Gnosticism is becoming prevalent in the Catholic and Protestant churches due to allowing a study of A Course In Miracles within the church as a community project. The Catholic Church does NOT endorse ACIM, but they have allowed its presence. On the other side, the Unity church and Church of Religious Science DO endorse ACIM at least at the local level.
