This is from a movie called "Johnny Got His Gun" About a soldier who lost his limbs, his sight, his hearing and his speech in battle. An absolutely haunting movie about the realities of war
Great reaction. It’s about a soldier who was hit with a land mine and lost his legs, arms, his ability to feel, talk, hear, smell, and feel. He doesn’t know if he’s awake or asleep. They are debating whether or not to keep him alive. Based on a book, and the video has clips from two different movies. One of the greatest videos ever made. The part where he cries for his mama always gets me. Some good lines: “Death has a dignity of it’s own.” Also, when his dad tells him every man has to face death alone. My favorite is between the priest and general. 11:09 The General: Don’t you have some message for him, Padre? The Priest: He’s a product of your profession, not mine. 🤯☠️ That is rough! That’s a deep line. Be safe. ❤ y’all.
He can feel pain. In the lyrics, 2nd verse last line it says, "Nothing is real but pain now" so he feels pain. This song makes me cry everytime I hear it, and live is Even 10x better!!
@@Metal_Mary Oooohhhh. Great catch. Yeah, same. I can’t watch it without tearing up a little bit. Usually when he calls for help from his mom. 😭 That’s real. Whew. 😢 Anyway, great comment. Ty for the correction.
I agree with pretty much everything you say… But, the cut up clips make it hard to tell, but it is one of the doctors who asks the military clergyman “padre” for the message. The military clergyman is saying that this person living in torture is a product of MEDICINE AND SCIENCE, not specifically War (which would have sent him off to afterlife if not for the docs “experiments”)
... the drums are like sound machine-gun shots, the fast guitar solo is the running away, the brakes are the desiouns where to run to ... this song is deeper than most people think!
Some years back, Metallica had a European tour and they did a little experiment. Once you bought your ticket online, you were directed to a website where you could vote for the 18 (or however-many) songs you wanted in the set list. They then took all the results for each stop on the tour and honored the results. #1 pick on every stop was master of puppets, #2 pick on every stop was THIS song
This song is about a soldier that stepped on a mine and lost his legs, arms, eyesight and hearing. He's just a living being laying on a bed. Wants to die but cannot, with no way to tell them he wants to die. Great reaction bro!!!
I saw this movie as a very young child. Most adults will feel like they've been punched in the gut after watching this movie. It is absolutely not appropriate for kids. Even though it is rated PG.
*Some Metallica facts for ya: One being that they've been together for 42 years this October, are still touring, and still putting out albums. Two of the original members are still there (James, singer and Lars, drummer) Kirk Hammett has been with band for 40 of those 42 years, and Robert Trujillo (bassist) being the newest has been with Metallica for 20 years. Metallica is the first band ever to play on all 7 Continents, has won nine Grammys. has played with the San Francisco Symphony, played at San Quentin prison, and played the soundtrack for Mission Impossible 2 after Tom Cruise gave them a private screening of the movie, persuading them to do it. Elton John covered Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" while saying it was one of the best songs ever written and that Metallica was one of the greatest bands of all time. That kind of acknowledgement from someone like Elton John is one of the biggest compliments anyone could get. You can put on one song and be in full aggression mode, horns up, head bangin' and the next song you can rock your baby to sleep. Metallica is just the shit!* 🤘🤘🤘
Another Fun fact, James Hetfeld is a big Western Fan, which is the reason why Metallica always opens their live shows with "Ecstacy of Gold (by Ennio Morricone from the Movie The good, the bad and the Ugly)". Also Metallica was heavily criticized by hardcore Fans, when this came because they thought they had "sold out" by making a Music Video (this was their first Music Video), this was back when MTV was huge.
~ My late father served in the Vietnam war (he was an American solider) and he told me stories of how bad the war was. It was terrifying .. War leaves a lot of trauma for the people who served in war. Thank you to Veterans for your service. 👍 ~ I also have sleep paralysis, and it is so scary when you wake up and can't move or call for help. You have to wait until your body can move again. 😶
I recommend listening to the studio version. Then, watch the video again and see how they wove in the movie footage to tell help tell the story of the song. You have to separate the two, but the way they are related is perfection. I've still not brought myself to watch it, but the movie is "Johnny Got His Gun."
Side note. I wanted to say, I wore a Metallica shirt 5 days a week to middle school. I was that kid. Which in some ways it was fire in some ways it made me an outsider
The movie the clips come from is Johnny Got His Gun, as others have noted. It’s based on the classic book by Dalton Trumbo that everyone should read, even though it’s pretty grim. Trumbo wrote and directed the movie as well. He was blacklisted from Hollywood due to the McCarthy hearings (it’s a long story, look it up) and Trumbo was remarkable enough to have a movie of his life made recently. But the book is the point, and is a story everyone should read.
Loved the reaction man! The song is based on a story about a WWI soldier who was blown up. Dalton Trumbo was the author and the book is titled Johnny Got His Gun. I love the fact that you appreciate the deepness of the lyrics and the meaning of the song. Your reactions are wonderful. Keep it up😊
Grew up in this music. I am loving seeing the younger generations appreciate it the way we did. Especially folks from other cultures. We had no idea at the time that our generation would be the last to make great music. BTW this song is based on a great movie called Johnny got his gun. Must watch
The movie clips are from an old movie, "Jonny got his gun". It's about exactly what you were saying. Worth a watch in itself. Also, note that the drum beat later in the song mimics the sound of a machine gun.
That's a reference to the cover Metallica did of "So What". Garage Inc. Metallica does political stuff. But, is also punk. My apologies if that came off wrong.
I loved how much you loved this song! I appreciated how you wanted to understand the song, there's definitely a lot going on the first time you hear it, but you got it spot on. Great reaction!

This is from Johnny Got His Gun. Which was a war movie. They were told they could not use the movie clips for the video, so Metallica bought the Movie copyrights.
That Movie in that music video was chilling particularly that line "he's a product of your profession, not mine" that had to be the coldest line by a military leader
Metallica has a couple of these songs with the same structure as One, starting slow and building up to a climax. Welcome Home Sanitarium, Fade to Black, The Day that Never Comes, some of their best work in my opinion.
god damn good reaction of this song, you picked out the story as it went and aswell you noticed the ramp up of the music and so on. seen this song just fly over the head for some :)
Never read the book but have seen the film and its heartbreaking..Metallica did this brilliantly. Another great song by them is Nothing else matters which is a little bit softer than what they normally do but well worth a listen.
The video is intercut with scenes from the 1971 film Johnny Got His Gun, which was based on the 1939 novel of the same name. Both book and film are by Dalton Trumbo.
I saw Metallica in concert in 2000, the Summer Sanitarium Tour. The tour consisted of Metallica, Korn, Kid Rock, Powerman 5000, and System of a Down. Metallica played this song as their final encore. They had left the stage (after two prior encores). The lights hadn't come up yet. I knew we hadn't heard this song, and I was hoping they would close out with it. Suddenly, you started hearing distant machine gun fire. Then the sound (very realistic, I might say) of helicopters flying overhead. More machine gun fire. I already knew what was coming. Off to the side, some pyrotechnics went off in a simulated bomb blast and fireball. Then another one off to the other side. More machine gun fire and helicopter sounds. This went on for what felt like 10 minutes, just building in intensity, with more pyrotechnics going off. All of a sudden, one single blue light shone down center stage. It was the only visible light, amidst the sounds of chaos. In the middle of that beam of light, James Hetfield was standing there, and started playing the opening notes to the song. The crowd erupted in a giant uproar of cheers and screams. They killed it. It was an awesome experience, and a hell of a way to end a phenomenal rock show.
The movie clips come from the movie Johnny got his gun. The soldier had a bomb land next to him blew his arms, and legs off, made him blind and deaf and mute. And the military used him for experiments. The movie is based on the book Johnny got his gun about WW2 the book was banned but brought back in the 1960.
The Metallica video samples the movie Johnny Got His Gun. Joe Bonham (Bottoms), a young American soldier during World War I, awakens in a hospital bed after being hit by an artillery shell. He has lost his eyes, ears, mouth, nose, and limbs, but remains conscious and able to reason, rendering him a prisoner in his own body. As he drifts between reality and fantasy, he remembers his old life with his family and his girlfriend Kareen (Kathy Fields). He also forms a bond of sorts with a young nurse (Diane Varsi) who senses his plight.
The clips are from a movie called "Johnny Got his Gun." There used to be a saying in the US, I think before WW2, "Johnny Get Your Gun". The full movie is on TH-cam. The lyrics tell the same story. Also, the soldier in the story LITERALLY lost both arms, both legs and his face.
To me, the thing that makes James Hetfield one of the best singers of all time is that he can make you belive that he belives that all the words he sings are the gospel of truth
The video is a war movie its called.. Johnny got his gun .. thats what they use the video from ... its a beautiful movie and Metallica love that movie as from what i remember
I watch reactions to this song all the time. I think this is my favorite. You got the message qnd realized you missed some things. Like you said it'll take 5 times to get the instruments lyrics story and the feelings they envoke
D@mn. This song always gets me every time. The best react I've seen. I saw this video a few years ago by mistake. I've never gotten heavy metal. I thought it was a bunch of screaming & loud ridiculous guitars, BUT I was trippin. I didn't appreciate it at all. Didn't even give it a chance. This song is 1 of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Musicianship is fantastic & the lyrics killed me. I watched the movie immediately. Very hard to watch, but it was a great movie.
Its exactly the video clip you are watching. What it depicts. The guy in the bed with the white drapes over him is the soldier injured from war, severely damaged, that is his voice trying to work it out in his head and communicate with the people he feels around him. The army boss, the head surgeon, his father, the nurse asked to look after him. He's also reliving old memories to see if he can find a way to communicate he is still alive and what he needs. They all think as he's been so badly damaged, they think he cant feel anything theyre doing to him and is severely brain damaged. But he's in there like a normal person, they just dont know it yet. This is back in the time where with ADD they treated with putting a hole in your head and poking metal rods into your brain with just sedation. Like you had severe brain damage and no physical feeling.
Fade to black is my favorite Metallica song. Check it out. Anything off kill em all, ride the lightning, and master of puppets is fire. Garage days and and justice for all is really solid, too. They've made a lot since and justice for all but none as good as their early albums.
Good day shon. War is terrible. I want to share this with ya metilica live at Bing and purge Seattle 89 considered the best heavy metal concert. Song is "for whom the bell tolls" it blows the studio version out of the water, which is very rare for a live performance. We would love for you to react to this you won't be disappointed. Be cool stay safe.
I started listening to them in the mid 80s and saw this concert in '89. Very moving song, but it really did represent a departure from their original sound. This was the last album I bought of theirs. It was great, but they were already different by this time.

The film clips is from the book Johnny got his gun, which is based on the book of the same name. He lost his arms, legs, hearing, sight and speach.
Great reaction!

Rite on....so messed up 😧
I watch reactions to this song all the time.
If this does not make all people undertand how hateful war really is do not know what will. Lost my buddies and myself in 1973. Pray for us
They took us and threw us away. That's war nothing more nothing less. Pray my grandson never goes to war
The sequences in color are his dreams, memories and imagination while the black and white clips are his reality.
Gotta watch Johnny Got His Gun, it’s the movie that is playing behind the song.
