    I see most people miss this, when the military guy asked "don't you have some message for him PADRE" the man although in the military, is also a chaplain and so his response "he's a product of your profession not mine" is saying this is a war thing not a religion thing.

    • @neilpatrickhairless
      @neilpatrickhairless ปีที่แล้ว

      "Jesus doesn't like killing no matter what the reason's for". War is a disregard of a Commandment. The Padre is there trying to do a job but the job is in direct conflict with his religious belief regarding killing others

    The whole "being trapped in your body and unable to communicate or get help from anyone" is some sort of personal fear of James's or something. A very similar theme is in Trapped Under Ice.

    • @jermholio
      @jermholio ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. Sanitarium, Unforgiven, Invisible Kid and The Day That Never Comes are a continuation of that theme.

    18:45. Regarding the writing of the song, one thing to add was that the book and movie is something that Cliff Burton was always trying to interest James in and when Cliff died, the band watched the movie as part of dealing with their grief and this song came from this as likely both a tribute to Cliff and an expression of their sadness and dispair in losing him. That is my understanding at least from other things I have read.

    This was 1988! The video landed in '89 and was in classic Metallica fashion something so out of nowhere. Putting things in perspective, think about what was being played on Mtv at the time, glam metal, hair sprayed up m'fers singing about chicks etc. Then this lands and holy shit! \m/

    Very nice discussion on why things like this song are valuable and worth listening to. I would add that the dark music like this is also valuable to express the inexpressable (by the average person).

    • @LikeMindedLunatics
      @LikeMindedLunatics  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's actually something James has specifically said in interviews. He contends that one of the reasons he fell in love with music was because he didn't know how to express his feelings in a healthy way as a kid, but music let him do it. He's also said that he didn't know what his was feeling sometimes, but music would provide him with a way to describe what he was going through.

    If I'm not wrong, basically everyone in the band was allowed to suggest lyrics or things like that. On Master Of Puppets documentary, they said that Welcome Home, for instance, was inspired by a movie they watched together called "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". Lars was James' partner on composition, since he always had a great intuition about "lets play this twice, or just once, then lets add this ending to the riff, or this drum roll, whatever". And other members was allowed to bring riffs or ideas:
    Kirk wrote Creeping Death breakdown, Disposable Heroes chorus riff, Master Of Puppets pre chorus riff, etc. Jason wrote Blackened main riff, Cliff wrote Orion, Master Of Puppets post solo riff... list goes on. Lots of Lovecraftian songs was inspired by Cliff Burton (Call Of Ktulu/The Thing That Should Not Be), and not forgetting Mustaine brought lots of ideas/concepts for the whole Kill'Em All.

    No, they don’t let him die in the movie. The end of the video is how the movie ends. With him saying “SOS Help Me” over and over in his head, then it fades to black (hah!). So, they left him alive.
    I rented the movie the day after this video debuted. It’s over 3 hours of pure misery. The parts in color are his dreams, the black and white is reality. When it was over, I had no energy. I had no will to do anything at all. It was like 4pm, I was 16 years old, and I rolled over and went to sleep, completely depressed.

      Oh man that sounds terrible. I've always wanted to check it out but I don't think about it until I watch the video, and then I promptly forget.
      Sounds like my forgetfulness did me a favor this time.

    I like that Lars’ fills are very militaristic - like the rat-a-tat of a gun. It has a haunting beauty. I may have said this before, but when you have to deal with someone who wants you to help them die, it’s a nightmare you share. Especially when a part of you wants their pain to end and you’re only response is “you don’t want me to go to jail, do you?” There is nothing good about war. Or as Zeppelin put it “The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath.”

      They absolutely are. As much as Lars annoys me, he's terrific in this song.

    the song is great, but the video with the movie clips and dialog intercut is perfect. "he's a product of your profession, not mine." still gives me goosebumps. though, i think it was a chaplin saying that to an officer; which makes it even darker, imo.

    In my opinion, the second best song ever written from a lyrical standpoint. Second only to Master of Puppets. I think I might be biased lol. Thank you for doing this. It's a message everyone should hear, but nobody actually wants to. Now please excuse me while I go dry my face.

    Having had episodes of night paralysis, I can only imagine with horror what the main character goes through. Metallica's music has always had a symphonic quality to it for me. Consider showing your friend some clips of their S&M double album.

    Spoilers: Once he figures out how to communicate with people, he asks to be killed. But since they won't do it he says "Fine! Put me on the road in a freak show, so the world can see me!" Obviously, the officers don't want that, because people would realize how horrible war really is. So he just goes on insisting that they kill him. One nurse tries, but that officer stops her. That's when they decide to put him in that dark room with fewest stimuli possible. A tiny window, so people can't gawk in at him, with so little sunlight he can no longer tell day from night. The movie just fades to black, like the video. (The "Keep the Home Fires Burning" singalong is from an earlier scene, where he's dreaming that he's at an office christmas party)

    What I got from the film was that they thought he was brain dead (de-cerabrated individual) that they kept alive to conduct experiments on. He was not and could feel it all. When the nurse cuts off the life support, the officer pushes her out and hooks him back up! They ignore his pleas to die. Added a whole other level of terror to it, for me.
