Someone at work was trying to impress some Japanese girls we work with and bragging about how they went to a Japanese restaurant and slurped ramen loudly, because it's respectful and a compliment to the chef.
I just sat there thinking "Yeah..... I won't say anything..."
I got so annoyed with my Japanese friend for slurping because and told her and she told me in Japan it’s supposed to be a compliment to the chef. I watched this video and now I’m so confused.
Shelby Hughes I'm pretty sure slurping noodles isn't a compliment to a chief as a Japanese,but it's just the way we have noodles and soup at once. as two of them said in this video, if you want to show your appreciation to food they serve, you just say "this is really good" or "thank for the meal" looking at ppl working at a ramen restaurant.

@@shelbyhughes6252 Slurping doesn't mean anything. It's not a compliment, but it's not considered rude either. It's just how you eat noodles. Trying to not slurp noodles in soup is weird IMO.

i think in america it's become popular to sort of exagerate and romanticize these cultural differences because people are so fixated on the idea of foreign things being strange and quirky.

I do this everyday since I learned how to take a bath and I really liked it cuz I can sit while taking a bath but when we recently moved to canada the shower and toilet bowl is separated and I really missed our bathroom back home in our hometown **sigh**

learning to clean up after yourself should be normal and is a great idea. teaching kids how to live in the world is great, knowledge alone will not get you everywhere.

The right term is Life skills. In Japan they start teaching from pre-school.
This used to be a thing in Australia, like 30 years back. Kinda. At the end of each term, they would get kids to sand their own desks for an hour or two because they couldn't afford to hire actual workers, and they'd get kids to wipe off the blackboards each day. My mother once pointed out that there was gum under the table and the teacher responded by saying, "You put it there, didn't you? Clean it up!" So she spent the rest of the 30 minutes scraping off gum from under all of the desks instead of actually learning anything.
This taught her not to point out any trash and, instead, ignore it.
The closest thing to cleaning that I did was Clean Up Australia Day and collecting the rolls, I guess. Nothing comes to mind except, you know, just putting your own trash in the bin and being forced to pick up other people's trash if you come a few minutes late to school.
Kinetic RWBY when we had "bin scab duty" we had to collect a bucket full of rubbish before we could finish, so kids just grabbed the rubbish out of proper bins and it was all over in minutes. So teachers were so dumb, or just maybe to trustworthy, and thought we did an amazing job. I felt guilty when I pulled the wool over teachers who were to easily trusting kids. I knew how hard to was to get.
You know, the idea of having a bathroom and a separate toilet room doesn't sound half bad. I wouldn't have to worry about getting water on the floor.
Bathroom floors are also usually slanted/curved towards a floor drain. This is something that should just exist around the world because it makes total sense.
I hate it when houses only have toilets in the bathroom. That way you can't go when someone else is taking a shower and if it's too close to surfaces that e.g. shampoo bottles are placed on I get nervous I might bump into them and have them fall into the toilet bowl. And the smell... that's probably the worst part, because I hate smelling toilets when I'm using a shower/bath.
Error In The Matrix
Unit tub is less expensive and saves space, arguably more convenient. Showering while sitting in an open area is easier and less cramped. Also, having the shower control is way better for water usage and is something I don't really see, in Canada at least. Some higher-end places probably do have a separate shower.
Anyways, having the floor drain and slope itself is what I'm mostly talking about, though.

That one lasted about 3 weeks. This one is so much better! Getting the ultrasonic treatment twice already costs more than this so I would definitely recommend permanent straightening over that! The only thing is you can't do it on damaged hair, which includes a lot of dyed hair I think? My friends so far have all said they can't do it since they dye their hair.

Japan isn't really a weird place, it's just different than most other cultures and needs some getting used to for a westerner.

It's just a different culture in general. Many think American culture is weird, every culture is different. Japan culture is quite similar to Vietnamese culture (I'm Vietnamese) and Korean culture. I'm Vietnamese American and it's good to see differences.

Their "Weirdness" isn't even widespread. It's mainly based around a few small areas in Tokyo.
I don't think Japanese culture and western culture is that different, tho. If differences are weirdnesses to you then, I think China or southeast asian countries are more weird than Japan. There are Christmas, Halloween, and Valentine's day in Japan, you know.

This, I actually can comment on. The Japanese government defines "literacy" as the ability to read Hiragana and Katakana, since technically the Japanese spoken language can be written using only one or the other (or both) of these. Going by this definition, I would be considered "literate" in Japanese, which I definitely am not. Hiragana and Katakana are very easy to read and write, much more so than English. However, there are about 2000 Kanji recognized by the government as also necessary to functionally read Japanese, but aren't counted as "necessary" to constitute literacy.

Hahahahah just because english spelling system is fucked up doesnt mean katakana and hiragana are easy. Maybe you are doing a lot of mistakes and thinking "well this is easy"... nope
I've been trying to learn Japanese on my own for a while and I've come to the conclusion that I'll worry about the Kanji later. I want to get the Hiragana and Katakana down and memorized and focus on learning vocab an grammar. I'm sure I'll learn some Kanji along the way, and not that I don't want to (I mean, if I really wanna learn everything I'll HAVE TO at some point). But as of right now in my new stage of learning Japanese the Kanji seem very daunting to me, and I don't want that to be the reason I don't learn the language.
@@goblinleafyboi Don't worry too much about the kanji right away. Most children growing up in Japan don't start learning kanji until they are mostly fluent in Japanese so there's no need to stress about it for a while
@@ttarsi it's the same as we learn the abcd, what makes it easier for them is that they have fixed write and sound, so if you hear something, it wouldn't be suddenly have different meaning and writing, but in english, there's this type of which one should have double character, or like this have the same sounding back (or vocal sound, I don't really know what you call these" but for example, y"ou", cr"e"w, cr"ue"l, wh"o", kangar"oo", which all sounded like "u", even if they are not written by the letter "u". While in Japan, a will always be a, u will always use u, and not suddenly being writtern by oo, ue, and etc. And I think that's what they mean by easier. And I agree, it's not easy as well, but if you grow up with them, the sentences really do have easier form than english that have differemt kind and so many kind of sentences form.

I count about 14 (of 25) statements, that are true and not in need of further clarification, to not be misleading ...and about 7, that are downright false (one of which they didn't debunk, though).
Note that they never really said if the kancho thing was true or false. (it does exists, sure, but... is it common? Is it accepted?)

I actually did not know that Ganguro was a fad and is absolutely no longer a trend any longer. The way Western types portray it as being a normal part of Japanese culture is staggering. It doesn't help that there are quite a few anime with Ganguro characters.
I like the weird Japan! To me most strange things on internet about Japan only make Japan more attractive. They are wired but exceptional, especially some anime plots. How wonderful if there were some weird but good places in this standard world.

Funny to see this mentioned, "hikikomori". Although it is painted as a Japanese phenomenon, I think this happens all over the world. I did a paper on it and took a look at the role of the (absent) father in the Japanese family in connection to the hikikomori. It was very interesting.

For number 16, it's common for any restaurant in the world where trainees just do one job for years before they get promoted. My aunt has been cracking and separating egg (whites and yolks) for 2 years now. She'll be promoted soon, but being a chef really takes a long time unless you have money and connections.

Marley Dees it’s weird in Japan because traditionally those three things are in separate rooms. They put them together in one room only if the house is really small. And that’s because as Rachel and Jun said, you’re supposed to shower outside of the bathtub, and then soak. The water in the bathtub is supposed to be used by all of the family members, that’s why it has to be clean and used only for soaking. If you’re showering outside of your tub, it means that you can’t have anything on your sink or it will get wet 😅😂 that’s why it’s better if you have the tub in a separate room.

There is a difference the word here is "wetroom" the drain in the floor denotes this as in don't store dry towels or tp on the back of the toilet as while you shower it could get wet.

In general, kids in America don't get the kind of academic pressure that kids in Japan or other Asian countries get. Instead of trying harder to get better at a subject, an American kid may just give up and choose another subject/hobby they like better. Or decide to focus on sports instead of academics. And many American parents are ok with that, and don't pressure their kids to study or get along with the teacher. Too many American parents also try to argue with the teacher in favor of their children. Asian parents usually give the teacher free reign to teach how he/she sees fit.
Depends where you live. If you're a student in NYC, then its a hugeeeeeeee competition.

In my experience, Asian teaching results in good test results, but poor creativity. If you want scientific and technical creativity, cram school is not the way to go. The cram school approach produces kids who know everything, but who have no clue what to do with that knowledge.

This is the most genuine channel about Japan. They talk from their experiences and after doing enough research I assume since nothing in the conversation seem to exaggerate on any particular topic. I feel I learn more about Japan from their channel than any other blog site. Plus, Rachel is so entertaining that it's the first time I have binge watched a TH-cam channel. Also watching Jun's reactions is fun. 😂

Race has nothing to do with it, it's the educational systems of each country, it seems that the USA is lacking.
I would say it's probably our immigrant population, however I'd hesitate to say it's our "illegal" immigrant population. I'm fairly certain there are plenty of legal immigrants from countries with poor public education. I'm curious if this 14% literacy means literate in the common language of a country or literate in any language? We do have a lot of people who don't who aren't literate in English, so if it means in the dominant language than our immigrants, legal or not, could be what brings us down. However, it may not mean they aren't literate in another language.
I also wouldn't think in terms of race because it's about education, not "average IQ." Someone with a low IQ can still be taught to read, regardless of their race.
Anyways, I'm simply speculating since I myself know little on the topic (I did a little research while typing this, but I didn't dig too deep). If someone happens to know if literacy in a country includes foreign languages, I would be interested. I realize the very definition of the word includes any language, but I'm wondering if this apparent survey that yielded our 14% included foreign languages or not.

At both my schools, the students clean after school, but we still have janitors as well. Like what Rachel was saying about the bigger messes, janitors will do that. They also trim the plants/trees/whatever, and clean the outside areas and do the more time consuming stuff like vaccuuming or sweeping the common things etc.
All these articles that are like "OMG you won't BELIEVE what CRAZY things JAPAN does!" are so bizarre. I find they tend to fall into three categories: Something many countries do, something normal that is made to sound weird, or 100% false.
And I tooootally feel you on the love hotels. The number of times I've seen incredible buildings and been disappointed is embarrassing. :p
ALSO: As a disabled person, five step escalators are genius and I love them.

I'm agoraphobic, I'm 24 and I spent 4 years housebound, it was the hardest 4 years of my life. Even tho I had video games and music and books, the lack of social communication means it was very lonely.
I'm trying hard to over come this, I still have days/weeks when I cannot go out but my dream is to live in Japan, so I'm trying hard to overcome this. I didn't know it was an "acceptable thing" in Japan.

Uuugh! Aragophobia is the worst! I have epilepsy and can't drive, but I Had it SEVERELY at ages 14-18...got a bit better, but not by much between 19-23, even though I got married to an Air Force guy and had to move to Mississippi, It took all I had to even go next door alone. Moved to OKC and had kids. The kids made it easier when we had to go places ( just them and I), but that was extremely rare. I went on a plane (Phoenix to and from Oklahoma City ) alone twice and survived, but it was draining and had to keep myself occupied. I got on anti-anxiety/panic Meds and began therapy for tons of stuff, including my Aragophobia, but with a lot of work and Meds, when I was 24, I was able to go places on my own. I had to force myself to be light-hearted and happy to fight the constant impending panic. I'm 36 now and still struggle with it, but it's mainly because of health issues. I still get days where the thought of having leave the house fills me with dread. I know EVERYTHING you described. Are you in therapy or on Meds?

There's this idea that in Japan you HAVE to act a certain way or else someone will get mad at you or you will disrespect some one. It's not like that. They're people too. They're not robots. If you mess up and do something wrong no one is going to attack you with their samurai sword haha. Also people in America cherry pick weird things that are "in Japan" and act like that is the norm, but that stuff is everywhere not just Japan
In Denmark we clean the class rooms ourselves too. Like the blackboard, tables, put things back to where they belong, put the chairs on the tables and so on. But not the floor, we had the cleaning ladies to do that. We only had to do all this when we were young like 7-12 years to teach us the meaning of responsibility :)

I think it's mostly an Asian and South East Asian thing. It's not really a compliment but more like slurping kind of cools down whatever you're eating - which of course is referring to soup. That's the way that I was taught.

I'm Japanese. Yeah, sometimes slurping is good thing because about certain kind of noodles food, like ramen or Soba, by slurping we can also smell the tasty soup and it helps us enjoy the dish more.
Weirdness is subjective. Some of these may well be "weird" to those unfamiliar with them.

One of my English teachers actually taught English in a Japanese school, so when I did a pamphlet on Japan for a project she just came over and started talking to me about it, it was great. She is also fluent in Japanese, Romania and German (she taught in all of these places)
A love hotel is something many Americans need when they have roommates in their apartments, talking from friend's experience studying in the U.S. Bringing your gf or bf home to stay overnight often is not acceptable when you're sharing the apartment with someone else. Idk why many think it's ok to bother other people in the same apartment.
