- It was my absolute privilege to fly with one of the US Air Force's C-17 Globemasters' based at McGuire Air Force Base with a crew from Travis Air Force base from the 21st Airlift Squadron supporting exercise Mobility Guardian 2019.
We performed a tactical takeoff from a location in Washington and performed a tactical descent and landing at Moses Lake Airport in Washington state.

After getting used to seeing old, well seasoned, 50 year commercial pilots, it's really weird seeing such young men on the flight deck. It's so cool that the military is able to give kids like this such a fantastic start in their piloting career.

I was in a C-17 that made a tactical descent and landing into Bagram. I was in the cargo hold strapped into a canvas seat at 0200. It was the wildest ride I have ever been on. Smoothest landing, too. Well done, USAF. There is no comparison between this ride and that one. This one is easy, routine...
Everyone that flew into bagram was a tactical approach even us in C5's that is the same profile they flew......
I figured that to be the case, but it turns out our C-17 also had a couple of fighters in the pattern with them. Before exiting the plane, I chatted with the flight crew to compliment them on the baby's behind smooth landing. More planes, more fun...
I've made those landings at Bagram as well. They come in fast and put it down on the tarmac. C130's coming in and out of Herat were like that as well.
I love all of the fighter aircraft but there is something special about the larger transport aircraft that I can't get enough of and the C17 is such a pretty aircraft.

@@MrGaryGG48 LOL. Not yet. She recently gave me a ride in her Tesla and gave me the ludicrous acceleration treatment without warning, which almost made me puke. She got a kick out of it as she knew it would freak me out.

The tactical takeoffs from these birds are just awesome, worked a while in a South American airport and saw them coming and leaving , such a view .
I used to live near a base in Germany and always loved watching these come and go, especially that roaring engine sound! Just awesome!

I was in a C-141 for an emergency landing after a bird strike that was pretty intense. Also, the night landing into Afghanistan just after 9/11 was an actual tactical landing and I could have sworn we were upside down multiple times. Lights out, banking like crazy until were were on the ground.
this is exactly why you must rely on your instruments and nothing else. you may feel like you're upside down, and it may even "look" like it, but always trust the instruments.

Yeah, I live 25 min away from Philly, (I live in NJ) so I always hear and see the planes going into Philly Int. Since I live near McGuire AFB, I always know the difference between the airliners and a C-17 when the C-17 fly over.
After watching this video people can feel safe with airmen like these defending us. Thanks sirs, your no. 1 in my book.

Yakima Training Center- I was born and raised in Yakima. I’m a commercial Pilot. But as a GA pilot in my “ private” days, you were able to contact the YTC ( back then called the “ Firing Center”, and once or twice a year, they would let civilian pilots fly over that MOA and run the airstrip at 50’ AGL and do some BRIEF sightseeing out there. I remember seeing blown up tank remains etc out there. But like I said, fun times the cpl of times a year they were NOT hot out there. Loved your video guys. Great quality too!!!

I live right near McGuire AFB and these C17’s always takeoff and land. They pass my house at like 5-6k feet so I get a great view of them. It’s a monster of an airplane

During WWII there was pilots that was only 17 years old with very little training.
Same age...just less sun to wrinkle the skin. A lot of Afghans who are 18 look 35 years old because they live outdoors.

I was at Charleston when several delivered from Long Beach. Yup, they smelled like a new car. Now they smell like piss and hydraulic fluid.

I don't know how real to life they are but I got one for cheap for Flight Simulator. It's ain't no F-16 but if you wan to go big but get some fly by the seat of your pants performance, the C-17 works. From my research the Flight Simulator one does pretty well by the numbers compared to real life.

@@Craneman4100w There are 2 models. One from _Virtavia_ and the other from _Area 51_ . Neither is bad. I liked the A51 better but I don't recall why. I picked them up for ~$15US on Christmas sales quite some time ago.

@@alanf403 Two piece? WTF? Loved the "bag". Especially on those 80% humidity / 120 degree days loading the plane in Howard AFB. On the flip side, if we landed in Keflavik or Gander to refuel, they were stitch thin and the freezing wind would go right through them.

Grew up an Air Force brat with my father stationed at McGuire. First, he was a loadmaster on C-119s and then transitioned over to 141s. He retired before C17s became active.
Bet he kbew my Uncle Roy Perkins who was a LM there at the same time. I did 4 years at McGuire in the 70's. You want a thrill do C130 Red Flag at Nellis. Flying thru the mountains to avoid detection.

The C-17 is a pretty badass aircraft. It has some pretty amazing flight characteristics for such a large aircraft. I understand that it was engineered to be tough. It’s like the Abrams tank of the skies.
On a different note, as a military veteran myself-served in the US Navy, regardless of the inter-service rivalry’s, we are all on the same team. I do appreciate the USAF guys! We other branches couldn’t do it without you! 👍😜💪🏻

@@skippymon It took me exactly 5 minuntes to figure out where the takeoff was from. All you have to do is google the excercise name and they tell you what airfields they are operating from in the Exercise Publicity Website. It's not exactly a secret.
CloudNine... Just found this video of yours... Nice. KMWH. Grant County IAP. Moses Lake, WA. I know it very well. I was in the C-17A 16 years from 1996 to 2012. I was at McChord AFB from 2000 to 2003 as the wing transitioned from C-141Bs to the new C-17As. Initially in the 7 AS. Then up as Dep. Chief of WG Trng., then the 62nd OSS/DO, then the 62nd OSS/CC for 4 months at the CC deployed overseas. Previously at Charleston AFB 1996 to 2000. Lots of follow on assignments... I did a LOT of training flights, high speed low levels into and out of Moses Lake as a C-17A IP, training our very YOUNG crew force. Surprised this crew isn't using the "tactical" C-17A specific assault concrete runway 09/27 (3,500 x 90). Regardless...great to be a part of the USAF that trusts, empowers very young Airmen to safely fly (both pilots and loadmasters) a then $250M aircraft day/night, on NVGs as required, in tactical operations, airdrop, globally in support of the American people. I was working for the phone company at McDonnel Douglas in Long Beach when they were developing the C-17. We had a microwave radio room in one of the hangars where they were doing the wing stress testing on it. They had all these really long hydraulic tubes connect to the wings and were lifting and lowering them until one of them snapped. They found a design flaw and obviously fixed it. We also had a radio shot on top of Mt. Baldy where they relayed information between Edwards AFB and the plant in L.B. A technician up there could tell if the plane was in a hangar or on the runway by just reading an oscilloscope. One of the earliest test flights they did a 380,000 LB takeoff in 1200 feet.

I guess I've turned into one of the old greybeards I used to laugh at when I was in flight school because the two up front look like they don't even shave! (30 years with American airlines btw). My youngest is now a C-17 crew chief at Travis AFB. It's quite the bird!

C-17s fly a backside configuration approach. Google can explain it much better than I can.

It's to do with the flap setup the C-17 has. The engine exhaust 9s blown directly onto the flaps, unlike most passenger aircraft, and then directed downwards. This also greatly helps with the short landings and takeoffs the globemaster can perform

To be more specific, they are not soldiers, they are Airmen, or Air Force pilots and I am not sure what you are getting at over my reflection of how young they are. I was a young soldier in the Army and now that I am not young anymore, I reflect on how young I must have and did indeed look. After 30 years of military and paramilitary life, I was only recognizing how young they are and has such great responsibility.
rage5606 ? By soldiers I actually meant “warriors”which in times of strife is what they are, as opposed to run of the mill airline pilots. Using one of these craft to drop a tank into an unprepared field in a combat zone with people shooting at you is what separates them from airline pilots. It is quite common to see very young pilots flying for the airline, especially the Asian carriers. Most anybody can learn to fly an airplane.
