  • The 2006 revival cast of Les Miserables, led by the amazing Gary Beach, perform Master of the House. This is one of the most fun numbers in the show to watch.
I saw this play live in 2007, with Gary Beach as Thenardier, and he will forever be the best actor for this role in my mind. He's absolutely PHENOMINAL live!!

I had the great pleasure to see Mr. Beach, in the Los Angeles production, back in "eighty-eight"! As I have seen MANY companies of this show, I have seen MANY "Thenardiers", & Mr. Beach was & IS by far my favorite!

XD I always thought that noise at the beginning sounded like a fart.
That moment and every one after it were absolutely hilarious. AWESOME job Gary Beach.

My parents saw Gary Beach as Thenardier in the Second National Tour back in 1987. I wonder if his performance was anything like his revival performance. If it was I incredibly jealous.

I can't see Ann Harada play Madame Tenardier without the image of Christmas Eve coming into my head.

@ jnetusil - I agree that it doesn't really belong with the rest, but every good musical, especially the tragedies, need a little comic relief for the audience. This is Les Mis's version of Office Krupke.

Thank you for posting the "original" of this song which for the last poster it's supposed to be "cutesy"

Gary Beach should have been cast in the new Motion Picture, instead of Sasha Baron Cohen!

The tempos in this revival, particularly this song, get so fast and frantic it's hard to understand the lyric. They also used new orchestrations with this production wich at times got too decorative and added many intrusive accents to the score... again, detracting from the lyric. Fortunately I saw Gary Beach (one of the BEST Thenardiers EVER) perform this role a few times in the 80's and 90's with the old tempos and orchestrations!

both are good but to me the best thenardier is alun Armstrong and dale Hensley he is playing it now at pioneer memorial theatre in Utah he is phenomanal

I agree - it put a different spin on the verse, as with many others in the movie. It helps the movie be itself instead of just a film of the musical... and Helena Bonham Carter is absolutely hilarious in the role while maintaining enough scariness to plausibly frighten Colette... Cosette.

I love how the movie has Madame Thenardier flirting with a guy when she does her solo and after shows she was doing it to get more money for the two of them. I think that is a good representation of her, instead of just talking about her loathsome husband

The movie is based on the MUSICAL not the book! and in the musical they wre supposed to be comic relief.

  • @HappyHauntsMaterialize
    @HappyHauntsMaterialize 11 ปีที่แล้ว

actually the movie is based off a musical which is based off a book which is based off of the student revoloution in france. it's so confusing

  • @VRNProductions

Not really- they're comic relief in the first act, but by the second act they're portrayed just as terribly as in the book. The film seemed to miss that, though, and just turned them into caricatures for most of it.

I think Cohen was great, he brought a good mixture of comedy to it. I think Beach makes the role a little camp. im not saying its a bad thing but for the movie I don't think it would have worked

Which means they were significantly closer to Hugo's portrayal of them in the novel. The Thenardiers are *not* funny in the novel. They range from repulsive to terrifying.
Personally, I thought Baron-Cohen and Bonham Carter had amazing chemistry. I'm *REALLY* hoping they cast her as Mary Austin in the Freddie Mercury movie that he's scheduled to star in.

  • @AaronRodgersIsHot

I have to admit that The Thenardiers are more hilarous in the stage play then the movie. I didn't find them funny in the movie at all. I just thought they were annoying and replusive on screen.
