Anderson is perhaps one of the best characters on the show. He's drawn to be a psychopathic religious fanatic, but basically he's just doing this thankless job. After all, vampires are still bloody beasts, and apart from Hellsing, Iscariot is basically mankind's only weapon against the supernatural.

Anderson never stood a chance, but god his chemistry with Alucard as a rival was through the roof. I personally prefer this series over Ultimate, but one thing I do love out of Ultimate was their final fight and the emotional moment afterwards.
Yeah, the only two things that make me prefer the Ultimate version over the first anime in the fact that the OVA respects the lore of the manga and the albridged version. Regarding style and music the first one is way better

He's still not even close to Alucard's level of power, but hes stronger in Ultimate than he is here, at least to me. Here he getz toyed with easily. Barely doing anything, in Ultimate (while he still doesn't really do anything actually damaging) he gives Alucard a bit more of a proper fight.

I know, I wish I knew. This is were the TV series completely makes up its own story. Different from the OVA and manga. The Director for the TV series said that it they couldn't do the manga version because of restrictions and budget. You know the long fight scene from the OVA with Anderson vs Alucard? If that made in the TV series; that scene alone would of bankrupt the studio.

Plus, a brainwashed Walter never betrayed Hellsing, Anderson survived (I think), London wasn't destroyed by Nazis but instead plagued by a vampire who fans (or rather the wiki) believe could very well be Count Orlock, which goes to answer the question which has stood since Nosferatu was first released in the 1920s: whether Dracula or Orlock was the greater vampire (even though technically they were supposed to be the same vampire, but the Germans had to change the story to avoid copyright issues (which failed anyway).
Umm i know this post is 7 years old, but the tv show was made before the manga finished. So they couldn't have followed the original story even if they wanted to.
Butterman1893 well, a lot of shows were like that to bring more people to the manga. They still ended up with a pretty good anime series, even if that ending was really rushed (ps, you’re a fuckin champ for responding 7 years later)
@@ash8329 By 'realistic,' I think he meant the tone is more 'realistic' in the anime than the OVA. The OVA had a lot of really stupid jokes and gags that that derail the story at times, while the anime barely used any humor and is tonaly more consistent.
I didn't know the ending song in Hellsing Ultimate OVA 8 had already been used by Gonzo in the fight between Alucard and Anderson in the Anime series..
I guess they threw it in there just for nostalgia maybe. I never watched all of the TV series, just all of Ultimate, so it’s weird but fun seeing how they did things differently here, and kinda mashed a lot of stuff together
This has to be one of the best if not the best showdown between Alucard and Alexander, after reading other people comments of what the climax flashback is about and the general direction of the show, I can say certainly that little afterimage of Anderson eatin his own bullet has to be a methaphor, a little piece of what was goin in his mind b4 chargin againts the vampire with dagger in mouth. In his struggle againts a unkillable opponent, Alexander while sufferin visualises his despair, the things that wander in the night have overcome his strenght and at his last breath he ultimately choses that no matter what it takes, he has become a livin weapon. No matter the weakness that radiates from his injuries or his stunned mind and willpower, Alexander basically throws away the things that are holdin him back (look that alucard aims at his head too but alexander was faster). That's why the last words from Alucard that he is no man or monster.
I'm not really sure. there's nothing in the OVA or the Manga that explains it, but I think it's supposed to be Anderson's backstory. my own interpretation is that it's a flashback of a time he couldn't beat a Vampire and so he gave up and tried to kill himself for his failure. with this in mind, it may explain why he gets a second wind and tries to kill Alucard, to prove something to himself perhaps.
Considering that the anime was filmed about the time Kouta was writing the Brazil arc (or, possibly, going close to Rip van Winkle's arc), the Anderson's "backstory" incorporates the scene from the Brazil arc, where one of the cops sent after Alucard offs himself, much to Alucard's disgust. Also, parts of the 3rd volume in the Manga were used in the "Psalm of darkness" trailer. Shame the originl intent was dropped.

To be fair, in the manga/Ova it did show that their was a speculation of ten years of rape and him trying to hold onto faith. He did a lot for his kingdom, all for the favor of god, but saw it all fall in the end. He finds an odd joy facing off Anderson, a paladin still holding onto faith, just like a human would.
