Leviticus 11 | Clean and Unclean Animals | Bible Study

  • This Bible study devotional covers Leviticus chapter 11. Here we read about God's command that Israel refrain from eating unclean animals, and only eat the animals he has called clean.
As always, we are committed to showing you how Jesus fulfills these specific passages. In Leviticus 11, we see that Jesus overturned this command in order to show that no one should be called unclean. This was God's way of showing that all nations, not only "clean" Israel, are to be included in his people.

There were no laws.... Jesus fulfilled all the prophecies, kept to the teachings and instructions in the torah to become one with the Father spiritually. Physically they are good instructions, but it's not going to kill you spiritually.

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Generally, clean animals will refer to the northern constellations.
The prohibition against eating swine does not in any way refer to an animal. This is based on the myth of Adonis (the summer sun) being killed by the black boar (winter). The Raven that is not to be eaten, is the Corvus constellation. The Vulture/Lyre, Owl/Noctua, Swan, and Eagle are all constellations of stars. Locust, like the scarab beetle, refers to the constellation of the Scorpion.

Thank you for your comment and kind words. You are right to say that God doesn’t change. However, his appeal of the clean and unclean food laws recorded in Acts 10:9-16 and Acts 11:5-11 are not him changing. Rather, they are his wise and perfect way of showing how those who were once far off under the Old Covenant (the unclean) can now be brought near through Jesus (being made clean) under the New Covenant. He changed what we can eat to give us and the world a picture that all people can be included in his family.
I would ask you to read Acts 10-11 and hear God say this himself.
Nevertheless, as Paul instructs us in Romans 14:2, we should not judge one another based on this. I extend that grace to you and thank you for extending it to me.

Thank you for your comment. You are right that God is using food to talk about people - that is the main point we are making in this devotional. Nevertheless, Jesus did declare all food clean. I'd encourage you to read Mark 7:18-23. In it, Mark plainly says, "Thus he declared all foods clean" (7:19). Further, Paul, when talking about those who say you must abstain from certain foods, says that "everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving" (1 Timothy 4:1-5). Thank you for caring about this and for seeking out truth. Appreciate you!

And Christ is a jew in which He also abides in God's dietary laws. I dont usually read the comments, but it's pretty sobering to see how the vast majority of these are taking some scriptures very seriously while completely disregarding others. Jesus himself said that the whole old testament points to him (Luke 24:44b) and this video is giving specifics. The word tells us that Jesus declared "all foods clean" (Mark 7:19), and this is supported in other passages in Acts and letters from Paul as well. "A house divided against itself cannot stand" Mark 3:25 - God will never contradict himself. To say that God the Father, and Jesus, and Paul, contradict one another, is to not rightly understand God's word. Remember that Jesus condemned the Pharisees: ""Woe to you...for you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others." Matt 23:23
Everyone is right - Jesus did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. What if the fulfillment of the law looks different than what we expected when we first read the OT? We need to be very careful to not take some scripture seriously, but disregard others. And brother, I'm grateful for this video. God bless you.

There is no contridiction, Christ is talking about washing hands, there is no discussion about eating unclean animals, everybody present eats clean meat, and the discussion was not about the animals they were eating, only about washing hands before eating because thats what the elders commanded.
Pauls writtings are difficult to understand to those not learned in the Law. 2 Peter 3:15-16
If it were true that you could eat whatever you want then you would not be judged for that. People are trying to make their own standard of righteousness as if they have the Holy Spirit as a prisoner to bend to their will.
Isn't Christ coming with clouds of glory, chariots, angels, fire, and a sword out of His mouth?
"15For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.
16For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many.
17They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD."
      Isaiah 66
Repent and inform your loved ones before it is everlasting time too late.
Christ will appear and when He does, He will slay those who eat these things establishing their own righteousness, while rejecting what GOD established.

A total misunderstanding of Leviticus 11. We are spiritual Jews. The body is still defiled by unclean foods eaten. This was not symbolic. the distinction was since creation, before the days of Noah. Who made the animals? Who stated their condition? Was it removed? No. Even after the death of Christ, was the distinction removed? No. He who defiles the body which is the temple of the Holy Spirit God will destroy. Which temple are ye?

WELL DONE! It's rare for people to read the OT and realize that ALL of it was about Jesus (Jn.5:37-39), and it's always symbolizing, foreshadowing or a metaphor of Christ Himself, or something in the way of Jesus. I've heard to many try to make the distinction today, without regard for Jesus words in Mt., Mk. and Acts. It's also strange that they apply it to animals, but not to the mixing of grains (you couldn't plant oats and wheat in the same field) or making cloth of mixed fabrics (like wool and cotton). 👍👍

Look what scripture says before the day of the Lord about those who teach against these things...
Her priests have done violence to my law, and have profaned my holy things. They have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they caused men to discern between the unclean and the clean, and have hidden their eyes from my Sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. Her princes within it are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, that they may get dishonest gain. Her prophets have plastered for them with whitewash, seeing false visions, and divining lies to them, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh,’ when Yahweh has not spoken. The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery. Yes, they have troubled the poor and needy, and have oppressed the foreigner wrongfully. “I sought for a man among them, who should build up the wall, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. Therefore I have poured out my indignation on them. I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath. I have brought their own way on their heads,” says the Lord Yahweh.

Christ declared food clean, but he didn't declare we could eat anything. Big difference. Food defined by Israel was whatever the Father sanctified by His word, which you will find even with Noah and in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14.
Since Christ said he did not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets in Matthew 5:17, he would rightly be called a liar if he did come and abolish what he said he didn't come to abolish, and that would disqualify him as the sinless sacrifice for our sins.
And, in Matthew 15 and Mark 7, he accused the religious leaders of voiding commands of God for the sake of tradition, but today believers teach that he voided commands of God for the sake of tradition. Teaching in that manner makes him a hypocrite and a liar, which does not fulfill the law as he purposed to do in Matthew 5.
Christ tasked his followers to be holy because God in heaven is holy in Mark 5. This is first found in Leviticus 11, at the close of the chapter, the Father says to be holy as He is holy. These dietary instructions are an expression of His holiness.
    Blessings to you!

For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

There is nothing in the bible by chance; it’s not by chance that God gave Adam & Eve a perfect diet before sin came in the world. It’s not by chance that Noah is instructed to take 7 pairs of clean animals as oppose to 2 pairs of unclean animals, after the flood they adopt a new diet and there after life of those living is shorten (not eating unclean else would be extinct). It’s not by chance that God gave Israel a simple diet when leaving the bondage of Egypt. It’s not by change that Elijah had a simple diet; it’s not by chance that Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah refused the diet of the kings table and kept to God’s ordained perfect diet and found 10 times better than all. It’s not by chance that John the Baptist had a simple diet; again today those who adopt a God ordained original diet live 7 to 10 years longer and healthier life. It’s not by chance that in Revelation that God still considers certain animals to be unclean (Rev 18:2 ) and it is not by chance that in Isaiah speaking of heaven it states; the wolf shall dwell with the lamb….. and the calf with the lion; and the child shall lead them….. (Isa 11:6-9). In heaven mankind and also the animal kingdom will return to the original diet, better to learn it now, and God cannot sanctify by prayer what he has already prescribed unclean / unhealthy to be eaten.
      Acts 17:30 3KJV
And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained;…..

About Leviticus 11:2-4, 47; at least two issues relate to the animals: the nature of animals and eating only clean animals. The nature of all animals is good in itself because God the creator is good. He did not create anything evil in itself. This also applies to man, whose nature is good in itself. As Gn 1:31 says, “then God saw everything He had made, and indeed, it was very good.”
The Lawgiver said that foods going into the stomach cannot defile a man; rather, the evil proceeding from his heart defiled him (Mk 7:15-23). He said this when the Law of Moses was still in effect. Why then did He declare through Moses that certain animals were clean and others were unclean, and only the clean ones were to be eaten? Whatever various answers may be given, one seems to stand out as especially important: the eating of clean animals forecasts the cleansing of both Jews and Gentiles in baptism to form them into one body, the Church.
Peter’s vision in Acts 10:9-16 indicates the inclusion of Gentiles into the Church through baptism: “The earth, then, this is what linen sheet denotes, and the wild animals in it are those among the Gentiles, and the command: ‘Kill and eat,’ denotes that Peter must go to them also; and the linen sheet being let down three times denotes baptism” (JohnChr).

That's a very large assumption considering you haven't given one verse to back it up. Especially considering that he declared he did not come to do away with the law. And unclean animals was more about health and then it was anything else. And the dream about the unclean and clean animals in the sheet well the Bible says it had nothing to do with animals it represented people. Just because he gives them a dream telling them that those who are outside of Israel can now be Israel does not mean you can eat unclean animals it just means he is forbidding them from forbidding the gentiles for for whatever reason

God gives only good things (James 1:17), and the apostle Paul certifies that "the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good" (Romans 7:12), we know that His law is for our benefit.
Let us remember who the God of the Old Testament is-the God who commanded the laws, not just for Judah, not just for all Israel, but for the benefit of all mankind. That same God, Jesus Christ, says unmistakably:
God designed many of the unclean animals for the specific purpose of disposing of the earth's garbage. Even though people throughout the world eat unclean food and live, and even though we could probably do the same-and many of us once did-for Christians, it is more than a health matter. In the Bible, God never directly connects keeping the laws of Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14 with health. In reality, it is a test commandment to see if we will obey God.
Two foundational verses are good to remember when questions over the doing away with God's law arise.
» Malachi 3:6: "For I am the Lord, I do not change; therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob."
» Hebrews 13:8: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."
God has good reasons for the laws He gives, and James reminds us, ". . . with [God] is no variation or shadow of turning" (James 1:17). Rather than assume that an Old Testament law is done away, we should trust that our Maker knows what is good for His creatures and put it into practice in our lives, unless it has been specifically set aside in the New Testament. At least its principle is still valid, which will help us to live abundantly.

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." Eph 2:8-9
If I could have ever made or kept myself clean, then Christ's death would not have been necessary. But as it is, I need him and his finished sacrifice for my sins every day, because I still sin every day. And I cannot boast in that salvation, because I did not accomplish it! Did you see that every person that JESUS HEALED IN THE NEW TESTAMENT TOLD HIM NOT TO SIN AGAIN?
Please read the following verses in New Testament written by Peter, one of JESUS's disciplines.
For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, THEY ARE AGAIN ENTANGLED IN THEM AND OVERCOME, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. FOR IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER for them not to have known the way of RIGHTEOUSNESS, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. Through the guidance of the Holy Ghost, this is what the Apostles and church elders decided regarding the Gentiles. - Acts 15:24-27
*24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls,* saying, *Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:* 25 It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth. *28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; 29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.*
*John 1:17 - For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.*
*John 16:13 - Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.*
*Acts 15:28 - For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things.*
*Matthew 15:11-20 - Also Christ Jesus explains that it's not about what you put in your mouth that defiles a man but what comes out of the heart.*
Although healthy eating is good for ones health. Some people in other countries may not have access to "clean food". With that being said, *Gentiles were not commanded to change their daily diet in order to be saved.* For Christ is looking at the heart of man.. The spirit of a man. Not what kind of earthly food you eat... *It's now all about the spiritual food. The bread of life, which is Christ..*
This is a wonderful video.. May the Lord continue to bless your ministry. "hugs"

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

In the 1611 bible's preface the translators came right-out and said, We know we make mistakes in translating words, but did the best we could, with what we had at the time. Our English word "Fast" can have at least 7 different meanings. The OT Hebrew and NT Greek languages are no different. Examples: The 6th commandment "Kill" in The Strong's bible dictionary # 7523 describes "kill" as premeditated lie in wait murderer. OT says the victim's "kinsman avenger" is to kill the victim's murderer, and no family member is to be seen showing any sign of sympathy, for the evil murderer of one of God's children. Duet 19:11-13 - NT, Luke 14:26 “If any man come to me, and "hate" not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. - ”Hate" is grossly mistranslated here! The Strong's # 3404 Greek says it can also mean to "Love less." - God's law does not charge, but the clarification of the proper intent makes a reassuring world of difference! "SEEK AND YE WILL FIND" ;-)

Now I understand what was being said in Leviticus but Jesus changed it so that all were clean by the blood He shed on Calvary's tree! I know from what I've read that in those days they couldn't eat an animal that didn't have cloven hoofs and ones that didn't chew cud! Also anything from the waters that didn't have scales and gills were considered unclean. For years I refused to eat shrimp for that very reason. Now I see that the blood of Jesus changed everything. I once heard that by the time Jesus was born, about 400 years after the Old Testament, the Ten Commandments had been turned into about 2200 rules and regulations. I may be wrong but I now believe that the scribes and teachers of Jewish laws of that era edited what they wanted to edit and put all these many rules and regulations on God's chosen people Israel! Leviticus is full of rules and regulations. However, thanks be to God in the Name of His beloved Son Jesus, I don't look at shrimp anymore as unclean and sinful to eat! 👍

@Riko Suave God said, to not eat unclean animals in Leviticus chapter 11. In Matthew 15:10-12 Jesus called the crowd to Him and said, “Listen and understand. A man is not defiled by what Enters his mouth, but by what comes Out of it.” immediately the disciples came to Him and said, “Are You aware that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”(They are Loosing control ;-) - Eating that which is unclean is a sin unto the flesh. That which comes out the heart thru the mouth can cause Spiritual Death! - The "Unpardonable Sin." - We must choose our words wisely, and on the other hand, be aware of the heath benefits of an Allergist regarding all foods.

As Gods chosen people-I’m grafted into Israel, why would I want to eat the diet of pagans (defiled). Jesus didn’t abolish the distinction b/t clean and unclean. You are teaching a false gospel. You are teaching that Jesus abolished the Torah. Jesus said “Do NOT think that I have come to abolish the law (Torah) or the prophets. I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I say to you, not an iota (jot) , not a dot (tittle) will pass from the Law (Torah) until all is fulfilled. When is all fulfilled? In Rev 21. Therefore, whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments snd teaches others to do the same will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of hesaven.” Teaching that the new covenant does away with the old is a false doctrine and teaching that the new covenant Rajesh into paganism is a false doctrine.which vision abolished the law about eating clean vs unclean? You said Jesus taught it, but the reference was from
Acts. Jesus’ blood doesn’t take me to paganism-it takes to being grafted in to Israel!!!! Israel was Gods set apart, chosen people. Deut 7:6-11, Deut 14:2, Ex 19:5-6, Is 43:10, Ps 33:12 and I know that I am God’s -set apart, chosen. Gal 3:29, Eph 1:3-4, Col 3:12-17, Rom 8:28-39, 1 Pet 2:9, Eph 2:19. I’m no longer a stranger and alien (eating swine and defiled foods that are pagan) Titus 2:14. Jesus came to redeem us from lawlessness and purify for Himself a people. What is lawlessness? The breaking of Gods law (Torah-instruction). I Jn 3:4 says “everyone who sins is breaking God’s law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God.” The Torah was Gods Law, it’s Jesus law. Jesus, Hod and the Holy Spirit are echad (one). Jesus didn’t come to teach a new law. The scripture of God is unchangeable. He doesn’t change, His Word doesn’t change, and the Law IS His Word. “The Word of our God will stand forever.” Is 40:8. It doesn’t matter what society says. “Your Word, Lord, is eternal. It stands firm in the heavens.” Ps 119:89. “I the Lord do not change.” Mal 3:6. So, what has changed. Did Jesus change the word of God? No. He kept the Torah perfectly. If He would not have, He wouldn’t be the Messiah. If I believe in Him, I keep God’s Law. I don’t keep man’s laws. Man eats swine. However, in Isaiah God says “Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst, eating pig’s flesh and the abomination of mice, shall come to an end together.” This is talking about the final judgment and glory of the Lord. The Lord says “But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at MY word.” His word says pug is unclean. Humbleness is doing what God says, not what i think. This is pride.
