  • Eritrea gained its independence in 1993, after many wars and colonization. This young country fought back and won the 30 year war with Ethiopia. Massawa is a port city along the Red Sea, where a major battle took place between Eritrea and Ethiopia. Massawa is home to the oldest mosque in Africa, and was once home to the last Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie.
    A very interesting memorial from the war is located in Asmara, and is referred to as the "tank graveyard". This graveyard is home to thousands of military machinery and equipment that were captured from the defeated Ethiopian army by the Eritrean army, who is also referred to as EPLF.
    Also in this video, I show you more of Asmara, the capital of Eritrea. We go bowling at a very unique bowling alley, and I show you where to go for internet. I get experience some of the local traditional food.
    Please enjoy the second video of this three part series.
    Thank you for watching and please like and subscribe!

    Excellent content, you made me miss my lovely country. Just a small correction: the three tanks you saw in Massawa were not Ethiopian tanks captured by Eritrean army. They serve as memorials to the heroic Eritrean fighters who sacrificed their lives while driving those tanks. They were hit by the Ethiopian army while crossing the long road connecting the port, as you might have noticed.

    • @meharihabtemariam3035
      @meharihabtemariam3035 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@ZannParker to give you a bit back ground about the Tanks; the tanks were captured from the Ethiopians by EPLF (Eritrean people Liberation front). They didn’t have a support as opposed to the then Ethiopian government at that time. The Ethiopians were financed 100% of their military budget from the Soviet’s for almost two decades from 1978 to 1900, till the downfall of the soviet empire (today’s Russia and Eastern European counties).
      Anyways, long story short, the EPLF almost all their weapons were captured and were gotten from the Ethiopians. There was a saying back then, it says like this, “fighting enemies with their own weapons”. So, not just these Tanks you saw in Massawa, but almost all the weapons Eritrea used to fight in the thirty years struggle for independence from Ethiopia was captured from Ethiopians themselves, which was gifted by the soveits. They fix it, and sometimes repurpose it. After using the Tanks for few years before 1990, Massawa’s liberation year, EPLF assigned the tanks with other ones in liberating the town Massawa in 1990, just one year before liberation of the whole country.
      At this point, the owners were Eritreans not Ethiopians as you might have thought so. But I can understand your confusion, though. So, during liberating, these three tanks were burnt and attacked with their owners inside them (Eritreans inside them). They were the first Tanks that made through the narrow long road that you have crossed that connects the town with the port. If you cross the narrow road, it means you have control the whole town and marks the liberation of Massawa as a whole. The mere only one single narrow line that connects the port and the town was a very important for the Ethiopians as well, and therefore, they targeted every artillery and every guns they had to this narrow road line. Any military vehicle that attempted to cross that road was mercilessly targeted and shot by multiple artillery, and hence it was a gruesome scene. It was a scene where the roads have changed to red colour because of blood of people. Ethiopian army made sure every Eritrean fighter and every Tanks that tried to pass that narrow road, would be burnt alive. Just to pass this narrow road, 1000 Eritrean fighter has been shot and died, and they sacrificed their only one life forever for the sake independence and freedom. Imagine being told, 1000 US soldiers dying in 48 hours of a war to pass one road. That’s how heavy the price was. After so bloody and brutal fighting, non continuous with bombs non stop, these three tanks made it through the road finally, and opened the gateway to independence, and were the cue for a bright light of freedom to the Eritrean people. That’s why they are honoured in a such a way in memory of the heroins and heroes who fall and sacrificed their life to liberate the town and overall to the whole country. So, the tanks are there not because they’re Ethiopian tanks, but because they were the first ones to made it and burst out through the unfathomable strong hold of the enemy at that time, the Ethiopian army.
      I hope this explains and gives you a little bit sense to you; as it doesn’t make sense to honour the tanks of your enemies, at all. So, that’s why they are there, not because they are captured from the Ethiopian army, which you might have thought so.
      Cheers

      I understand why you think we share a history, but let me explain. The Kingdom of Abyssinia was a multi-ethnic empire, but only parts of the Tigrinya-speaking population were involved, not the entire region of present-day Ethiopia.

      @Semay7828,
      Talk is cheap, first correction: Eritrea was built by the hard labor of Eritreans under Italian rule, although the architects were Italians; not fair to give credit to Italian colonizers only. I said talk is cheap, because you should do something about it instead of complaining from a distance.

    • @Semay7828

      @@brianjackson2272 for the people to be able to build the country, the government must allow free trade, free market, and free movement. It must allow private contstruction. It must allow free competion in all sectors of the economy. The government should make reasonable regulations to guide the economy and then mainly just sit and collect taxes, This way the people can participate in nation building. The marxist strategy being persued by the government of Eritrea for over 20 years is not working. But then again, the intent of the strategy was never nation building, I suspect.

      Zann is right, although may not have known the complete history of the 3 tanks.
      The tanks were the first three (3) of many Ethiopian tanks captured by EPLF during liberation years and the first 3 displayed were used in the liberation of Massawa in Feb 1990. Over 50 tanks were captured just during Massawa liberation, known as The Fenkil Liberation.

    In 1990 European calendar (in 1982 Ethiopian calendar ) the most ugliest war occurred between Shabiya and the Ethiopian revolutionary army the war lasted for 10 days and destroyed the the most important part of massawa port city ,the fall of the city of edaga on shabiyas hand changed everything shabiya did many inhuman activities on the civil Ethiopians on those live in massawa , shabiya burn out massawa modern hospital including the patients in the hospital cruelly, they burn out civil Ethiopians deadbody but in the other hand they collect the deadbody of erterians and shabiya fighters and they made the appropriate funerals for them, the government of Ethiopia 🇪🇹 did all the infrastructure they used till today (many roads hotels dams hospitals schools ) shabiya didn't do the half of what Ethiopian do for Eritrea, red sea was the border of Ethiopia but with help of arabs and imperialist government now it rest history, many Eritreans fight supporting Ethiopians in that time still some Eritrean exists that they believe they are Ethiopian.
    What shabiya did is made Eritrea the country in the deep sleep ...
