    I sure hope a nearly 40 minute video on camera bags isn't too ridiculous, but I had a ton of fun making it. I don't know why I like them so much, but it's just super satisfying to find something that really works! I think I'll definitely be making a follow up video on the surprise that showed up at the end of this video (if it's possible to "think you'll definitely do something" 🤔).
    And after Returning the Nomatic bag, I ended up taking some advice from the comments on the last video and trying the Tenba Fulton 14L all weather bag. It's amazing! I've always loved Tenba bags, but didn't think they had a backpack that suited what I'm looking for. I was also dubious about a roll-top, but it rolled its way right into my heart. The main part of the bag is similar material to the Nomatic, but the top part is similar to the Manfrotto, so it's kind of a perfect hybrid. I've been using that as my "everyday" bag because it's so small and I've been using the Manfrotto as my "big" bag for when I need more gear. A bagtastic duo!

      And I watched every minute of it even if I already had a bag I love and own! Finally someone not kissing ass 😂 and I bet Nomatic or PT would like this review too and get feedback, inspiration from it! Love how calm, honest, and personal your videos are - I normally just watch but I’m feeling like to comment today after having 6 stripes of bacon and 3 eggs straight lol

    I really like my new Compagnon Adapt 25l backpack. I think it fits nicely between the two in terms of price and features. It can be used as a camera bag as well as an everyday bag, which was very important to me. And when you want to change, you can quickly remove the pouches - just like with the Nomatic.

    Tl;dr. Get a normal bag and a camera insert/cube

  • @HomesickMac

    Oh, great video and comparizon, I'd sent the Nomatic back as well. I'm an owner of their Travel Bag V2 and it's sturdy and well executed, only I most often find the straps getting in the way when approaching the main opening. Then, when you pointed out that as soon as you really start filling the bag up (the Manfrotto) - the less space you'll get in those outer pockets. This goes for every bag out there, and is a valid statement for my Nomatic bag as well. Jeez how many side pockets that are quite tight, and the materials are dark so it's hard to see where everything is. With the bag full of stuff these pockets are really tight. They do have a great warranty because the zipper for the main compartment broke around one of the corners - the stitching went off and I couldnt run the zipper all the way around. So I wrote them and got a brand new bag within two weeks, international shippping, no questions asked. Although it packs a lot, it's still all those issues with the pockets, straps.. I guess I'm the same when it comes to finding a perfect bag/backpack... for musicians, the search is still on. I kind of lean to a, by me, modified camera bags as a solution, but there are some dedicated products nowadays as well.

      @@tombuck Ehm... dear sir, just received my PGYtech OneMo yesterday and sitting here configuring it for the upcoming trip 🙂 I think it's a tad overpriced but still really really good. They paid for the shipping so OK, and then I got this extra bag inside that can be used separately. Hm, not overpriced after all. But the Nomatic bags has become hefty priced and that's a total overkill when considering price/value. Fine whoever wants to buy it.

    I personally don't understand why anyone would pay that massive price for a nomatic backpack, no hate to Peter McKinnon but surely the price of the bag is mostly attributed to the name value of him than the quality of the bag itself kinda like the filters which from what I've seen from actual unbiased reviews, they aren't nearly as good as some TH-camrs make them look and are extremely overpriced.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Some brands are so over featured (Grovemade, anyone), over “reviewed” (take your pick) on YT that I seem to gravitate toward videos with gear and brands I haven’t heard about before. Or, when leading products go head to head, say Sennheiser v Sontronics. Happy Manfrotto came out on top in this particular review, I’ve still to see a McK bag that excels in functionality or exceeds in quality. And that’s ok, not every product can be #1 ❤

    What about rain? How all those backpacks works under short "shower" or longer low-medium rain? Even if covered with some backpack rain cover/ Do water goes down on back, gets wet inside etc. Any good test of those features? Or low rain for longer or even short "shower" won't affect those bags even without rain covers (those or some other brands)? I see really not much honest real use test. Everything seems like "please review our bag.. but don't scratch it" or some people perhaps order to review and return it back as it has still some badges/labels".

      I returned the Nomatic before using it in the rain, but the Manfrotto has held up very well to some pretty intense weather. My preferred travel/camera bag costs half of the Nomatic/Peak Design etc… seems to fly way under the radar. Cost me $150 and it’s been around the planet at least 10 times without failure. Traditional “camera bags” are just not going to cut it if you travel a lot. Most suffer from redundant features and excessive padding that add weight and bulk. From what I can see both of the bags in this review would benefit from a trim with a pair of scissors.

    I have the NOMATIC PM every day bag. And I completely agree with the lack of an outside pocket. If it's to be an "every day bag" why does it not have a specific place for writing utensils and possibly a notebook. Yeah I can have it on one of the two zippered pockets on the main compartment, but then I'll have to open the main compartment.
    Those zippered compartments should be like on the manfrotto bag. I would have liked the smaller pockets along with the large one at the bottom.
    Side note: Nomatic started offering a metal "frame" for their cubes as a free upgrad le to make them sturdy like they were originally designed. Not sure if that was just for the Kickstarter backers or for everyone.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to hear about the metal frame thing, I'm sure that makes a big different.

      @@tombuck There’s a Boundary Errant and Errant Pro. The Pro is too much bag for me. The Errant X-PAC would be perfect if it had an internal shelf/divider like the McKinnon (and some other bags). I’d also like to see maybe a 1/2” more depth, but I do like the slim profile (some bags are so deep you look like a turtle carrying them). They do have a cube insert (MK-1 I think) that effectively creates a shelf but it’s not the most efficient solution. I just put my PGYTech shoulder bag (with my drone stuff in it) at the bottom which gives the bag structure and allows it to stand up on its own. My camera sling and tech pouch go on top of that, which make them easily accessible from the top. The magnetic flap is so satisfying and there’s also a zipper for extra security. The bag has held up great over 3+ years and I keep going back to it despite having tried 50+ other bags lol. It just works for me. I also replaced the zipper pulls with the same ones you have (except in orange). I love the orange pulls on a blacked out bag.

    Great vid, Tom! I absolutely understand the obsession with finding the perfect camera bag. I've always been drawn to cool backpacks in the past, and now that I'm traveling more for events as media, I've been hunting for the bag that's perfect for my use. I'll have to check out the "medium" Manfrotto one as I like the design of the small one you have but I tend to overpack for everything 😅

    great video, I went through your very same process: first experiencing frustration with the top zip and ending up buying the peak design clip. So far I really like my Pro Light Backloader S and I can recommend it.
    I have one tip: you can make use of the big top handle to slip a light rain jacket through it, roll it up and close it inside its own hood. It doesn't really prevent the access of the top compartment and being on top it doesn't get much dirt with you use the back loader. My wishes for an updated version: 1) better top compartment access, so you can actually store a camera there. 2) One of the shoulder straps should feature a pouch for easy access of small items 3) Target weight 1.5kg (so slight lighter than current S version)

    I can say this - if you are a working PRO - AVOID THE PM NOMATIC BAG AT ALL COSTS - this was a DISASTER release - the "CUBES" are not supported like they are in all the TH-camrs videos - they instead send you a metal wire you are surpassed to thread yourself - AFTER SPENDING OVER $300 - AVOID this - INSTEAD - go to amazon and get the Besnfoto $99 backpack - it can fit a 16" laptop - it can offer top storage just like the PM - AND has side storage and you can get 4 of them for the price of the PM Nomatic with CUBES - that you need to BUY Separately - seriously without the cubes it is not a PHOTO bag AT ALL. Avoid PM's over priced nonsense you can usually get something way better for half the price if you look. Just being honest - I was on the kickstarter for this and as soon I got the bag (WITHOUT THE INSERTS I PAID FOR) after waiting almost a YEAR - I IMMEDIATELY returned it - mainly because in the YEAR wait - I bought that Besnfoto and its gReat and it was only $99!!!

    Another great video...wish the Manfrotto bag (and your video) were available so long ago while waiting for the kickstarter bag. It was such a LONG wait for the bag and the nickle and diming every piece on an already expensive bag really took the wind out of the sails on that PMK bag for me. It's a heavy bag on it's own and I always seem to open the main section the wrong way every single time.
    I love the interior of the Manfrotto, the red dividers really makes it pop compared to bile brown on the other...LOL. Just a thought on your comment about your camera with mic not fitting in the top section of the Manfrotto. I don't remember which Sony mic you had on there (is it the ECM-B1M?), but what about if there was a more compact mic? Sony ECM-G1 or ECM-B10 or another brand altogether? FYI...the B&H link for the manfrotto bag goes to Amazon.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Dana! You're right that the B10 is a bit more compact, but it's more of a length thing. It's still just as tall as the B1M. But I did try the Tenba Fulton after someone's recommendation. It has a roll top, so it can adjust to fit a setup of any size. It's pretty amazing honestly, I might need to do a specific video on it (I got the small 14L version, but there's a bigger 21L). It's a perfect "everyday" bag and then the Manfrotto can be used when a lot more gear is needed.

    In my experience the chest strap that you removed from the Manfotto bag helps to stabilise the Peak Performance capture, I never used it in the past but now I do.
    The material of the Mnfrotto is ripstop, it means it doesn’t tare when it is punctured. It will probably outlast the zippers. The tarpaulin material I have mixed experience, my Vaude shoulderbag didn’t last long, it was a dissapointment, my Ortlieb bicycle bags are 20 years old and still going strong.

    Hi! Insomnia led me to finding this video (which I stayed up to watch and view the other one on just the Manfrotto) and subscribe to your channel! You are the master of good gab! I wish I had watched this earlier so I could consider the Manfrotto. I purchased a ThinkTank Backstory 15 a couple weeks ago to fit all new full frame Lumix gear in advance of getting the new Panny S5 Mark ii. I've been a longtime ThinkTank user and I think it works similarly and fits as much as the Manfrotto, but with more rigid compartment dividers. It addresses some of the Manfrotto shortcomings you mention (like straps that aren't attached to the back opening flap) and other nooks and crannies to fit stuff. Overall, it's very comparable in a sleek and not photo-centric design. The biggest shortcoming is the base is not big enough for the pack to stand vertically on its own. Thanks again for your vids and I look forward to following you in the future.
