My wife and I have been using the Shimoda Explore V2 bags for a couple of years now, and I really love them. They're definitely not "stealth" bags, but they also don't look (necessarily) like specifically a camera bag; they tend to look more like hiking packs. But they're amazing, and one of the things I love the most about them is that the camera compartment is actually a separate, hard-sided unit that can be completely removed from the bag. And they have 3 sizes of insert depending on the amount of gear you want to carry vs. other stuff. If you're ever searching for another bag, you might want to check out Shimoda's stuff. The thing I like about the Manfrotto you show off here, different from the bag I use, is that it does look (more) like just a normal backpack and not like either a hiking pack or a camera-specific bag. I'd love to have something like that for just local city use, when I'm not out hiking with the Shimoda.

Does the aviation bag come w/barf bags?😊 Try DIY customization of army surplus gear, like gas mask canvas bags - no kidding; good for fewer items, but doesn’t attract attention and they are quite rugged. You’re right, the perfect bag doesn’t exist! Closest I’ve come to it and easily my favourite is the Peak Design Everyday 20L V2 and their customer service is exemplary! Top content as always Tom! 😁
I saw a Peak Design in the store the other day and I have to say, the little latch for the top compartment is one of the most satisfying things in the world to click.
You should check out the mindshift backlight 18. Mindshift is made by think tank. It’s a great bag and you can leave the bottom hipbelt buckled, then take off the shoulder straps and flip it around and open the entire back panel without ever taking the pack off.
I'm just under 5' 10" (I think that's about 178cm). Not a weird question at all, haha- each bag can feel and look totally different on different body sizes.
You're talking to a guy who owned 7 camera bags, bought over several years of course, but still, too many for a semi-pro. Not to mention how many backpacks I've bought... That taught me that I'm a nerd, need to calm down and use what I've got. So my backpacks have advanced to become gym bags that usually get warn out quickly, camera bags are also used for commuting, I gave away a few.. Trying not to just.. buy another bag because it's good, but it's tough. This Manfrotto is a bit to small for my "needs" but that PGY Tech that Peter L. has.... Great video Tom!
I have the manfrotto pro light but it's too robust look for a everyday carry going to work for me. Now Im looking also for the brevite as my daily bag going to work and want to carry my camera on me all the time.

Like you, I’m always on the search for the “perfect” bag. I’ve amassed at least a dozen over the past few years. They all service a purpose and I find myself switching often depending on what I’m doing. Lately I’ve been keeping everything in my car in the lowepro 450 RLX rolling backpack. Then I just grab what I need and leave the rest of the crap in the car. I like this format too. I’ve been doing similar type - scripted intro followed by casual chat.
Hey Tom I just watched your Blue Yeti Microphone video about knowing if its bad or not and enjoyed it. But there's actually a microphone comparable to the Blue Yeti called Behringer BIGFOOT and its right now $27-$30 in amazon and it would be a great video idea to compare those two mics for people out there looking to buy this mic at its great price.
The perfect bag for me ended up being a $10 Walmart backpack. I can put my camera pouch in there, my lens case, the case I keep my GoPro and accessories in, the wireless mic junk, a small monopod, and a 20k mah battery pack and I could fit my laptop in there if I had it.
@@tombuck neither was I, but during a trip to Thailand in 2017, I brought a typical LowePro rigid camera backpack. It was fine for my camera gear but when I started going to markets and malls to buy things, I ended up having to use clips to hook all the plastic bags around my backpack. Ever since that day, I swore to find a bag that could accommodate my gear and also other unforeseeables. I’ve never had to use the roll too fully extended, but I’m very happy to know that I can if needed.
Buddy you'd love the Lowepro Flipside series. There's really nice brown ones or black and they all open from the back side. There's also discontinued versions you can probably still find called the Flipside Sport in orange and blue and they are great but just lack small internal pockets. Plus the Sport version the entire camera compartment is it's own removable padded bag with handles so you can remove it and then have the backpack part become a lightweight unpadded daybag.
I mean orange OR blue. I have two blue ones in 10L and 20L sizes for probably close to a decade now. The 10 is far too small but the 15 or 20 are nice.
It varies so much with me, depending on what I’m doing. My stuff gets stored in pelican cases with dividers. One main one for filming rig with mics and another for excess audio. such that the whole massive rig can be taken somewhere if needed (hurricane country lol) I am partial to messenger bags. coming mainly from photography, I like to have a bag that doesn’t look like a camera bag when traveling or in a high traffic area. Also need something that is easy to grab a camera and put it back, same with a lens change. So my go to is a peak everyday 10L it fits my R6 and 16-35 and 24-105 or 70/200, a flash and my iPad for offloading if needed (Great Disney vacation bag). If I need more room but no iPad, then it’s a lowepro pro messenger 180 aw. If I need a couple lenses, spare body and 16in mbp then it’s a lowepro fastback 250 aw. No one bag fits everything, just ask my closet lol
I feel your pain. I struggled so much finding a back pack that I could comfortably carry every day. There are so many things that go into a well built back pack. I like the MONO M80 Classic FlyBy Ultra Backpack. And I've used it for years carrying my laptop, headphones, microphone, audio interface etc. But now that I'm getting into video, I'm starting all over, looking for a camera bag.
I honestly don’t know why I watched this entire video when I already have a camera bag that meets everything I need and want from a bag as someone who is both a photographer and a hiker and a park ranger in a national park who needs to carry a lot of gear both photography and other stuff I need, large amounts of water holding capacity, durable as all hell that will keep my gear safe in any terrain and weather, and is comfortable being worn for several miles on your back. The Shimoda Explore v2 35L pretty much fits all of my needs and more. Plus the green version of the bag genuinely looks really fucking clean when worn in my Park Service uniform with the fun ranger flat hat. Tho then again, that camera bag is definitely a premium one like the Peter McKinnon backpack. At some point I’m gonna need to find a quality smaller like 15-20 liter bag to can hold two camera bodies using a 24-70 and 70-000 and not require much more space than that other than maybe a large water bottle slot or two and a little bit of space on top to add a few things of whatever I need. Cuz not every time is it necessary to lug around 35L even tho I do utilize that space extremely efficiently.
Haha, I don't even want to think of the time I've spent watching videos about things I don't need (but thank you) 😁 20L really seems to be about the sweet spot, although 25 isn't too bad either.
After lugging a huge Manfrotto backpack throughout high school and community college, I blessed my back with a hiking backpack from REI. My camera would usually fit with my school supplies, books, and lunch. I would throw in a camera cube every now and then when I was primarily taking it out to shoot. Key takeaway from switching to a hiking backpack is that I love a rugged frame for my back, sternum and waist straps, and ways to cinch and secure everything down so nothing is bouncing around. Ever since I graduated, I haven't needed the 28l space that I have in my current bag. I was recently gifted the 15l Everyday Backpack from Peak Design, and am loving it so far. One thing I do miss about having a Manfrotto bag is how modular they can be, and I gotta say that I love your set up. It's great that your camera can stay mic'd up in there. Loving these longer videos that break down the meticulous mindset behind why we chose the gear we have--it's very timely lol.
I've noticed a lot of companies are not releasing "camera cubes" that can kind of work with any bag. Sort of a cool middle ground and then I guess you can just choose any bag to be a camera bag. I'm sure the hiking bag is super comfortable.
First of I make photos, no videos, but the best camera is always one that you have with you. I have one camera with one zoomlens and it hangs on a strap of my regular dayhike bagpack with a Peak Design clip. I used it on challenging mountain hikes in the Dolomities and it works awsome, especially when you are on steep walkintrails and don’t want to take your backpack on and off every time. I guess it is a lightweight point and shoot solution but it works fine. I really don’t get the dragging around of loads of gear, unless it is your job, but for hobby not. But I like to walk and take photos on the go, it is the walking first and photos second, not the other way round. The Manfotto bag seems to be the best with other stuff in it as well, the shoulderstraps also look the best and nicest. Zippers last a long time if you keep them clean and lubricate them from time to time with some dry teflon spray, they wear down a lot slower then. The straps on the side are not just for holding gear, when you packed your bag they can be used to compress your bag, you took one off but I suggest you put it back on again. This is common practice on hiking backpacks.
Thanks for the tip about the side strap! I did end up getting the Peak Design Capture Clip and it's really fantastic. I love having the camera super accessible while still being hands-free.
I use a Case Logic CPL-108GY. It's on the small side but, as mentioned, don't want to carry around every piece of equipment every day. It does hold a lot more accessory-type items in the front flap than I would've expected -- but not enough room for a laptop. If I ever grow up and need a better bag, this Pro Light looks like a great alternative.
I've been impressed with Manfrotto bags lately. I picked up their hybrid backpack recently to bring with me in the Citation cockpit and I couldn't be happier with it. Good luck with the flight training, enjoy the process!
the first thing I noticed I liked about that bag was the straps being attached to the back. That gets them out of the way when you access the camera compartment. My thinktank bag has the straps attached the main shell and they are always in the way when going into the camera compartment
I'm working on a pretty in-depth follow up to this, but for me, the Manfrotto is still currently leading the pack. The Brevite is awesome though. I've definitely used that one the most/longest and it's been great.
I have the Tenba DNA 15 Backpack. I think it’s a really good option if you liked their messenger and it addresses some of the issues with the Brevite Jumper you mentioned.

You can add videos to fundraisers for approved nonprofits, and then if anyone donates, the cumulative total from all the videos goes to the organization. It’s pretty neat! I wanted to try it out on a few videos during the holidays.
Manfrotto backs are the worse. The brake very fast. Most comon failure are the zippers. At my internship we had them. When they bought them in 1 year manfrotto send 3 new ones per back. Because they have broken zippers.
Interesting. So far it's been 5 months and mine is holding up very well, but I'll keep an eye on the zippers. Maybe they've updated them in the new versions?
@@tombuck this was mainly on the video backpacks, we had these Manfrotto Pro Light Cinematic Backpack Balance and their tripod bags that is included by the tripod. Now we have replacement with camrade run & gun large and traditonal Portabrace tripod bag. The camrade bag is extremly large, even to big for and i am arround 6ft 5 (1,94cm) but they are way better build. Waterproof ykk zippers. Head of tech also my intern supervisor has bought these and looked only and the zippers 🤣
I mostly use a shoulder camera bags since I started having a camcorder. The first one was a free Sony camcorder bag, It was really small when I first got it with the camcorder and I used it for like 2-3 years until I changed to a Caden (The smaller one) Which I used for 2 years and changed to a bigger one (Caden D13) which is the current one that I'm using to store my camcorder and my other stuff in. And if with the camera backpacks which they can store more of the stuff, But it's not suitable for my camcorder somehow. I still don't even know why it is like that. Maybe it's because I've been sticking with this type of shoulder camera bags now since the day I started having a camcorder. But I do still I have to move on with the same type of camera bag all over again, I think it's fine for me now. 😊
Yes, I had one of the free Sony bags too! I have a Tenba shoulder bag, which is really awesome, but I guess as I got more gear I felt like it was giving me a bit of shoulder pain and I like how a backpack distributes the weight. I REALLY wish they just had a backpack version of my messenger bag because it's so nice and super durable.
@@tombuck And yeah, My small Sony camcorder bag is the only one that it's really compact in size compared to my other ones. Which it makes it more eazy and quick to organize stuff in there, And even I can put my tripod on there too! (Especially in a gap where I can put my tripod in)
@@alanjones4333 Sony Handycam HDR-PJ30E. My 2011 Sony Handycam, I've been using it since 2017. (I started using it to record my vids on TH-cam in 2018) I've fell in love with it. It's a camcorder from 11 years ago. (Maybe the possible return of this camcorder is around 2023, Because I've been never using it for a long while now since the latest use was to film one of my videos in early 2022)
Speaking to the part about the back coming open and the strap placement… I’ve got an older Manfrotto photo backpack that opens in the back like the one you have. However, the straps are placed so that the zipper is against your back. Granted, it’s probably safer if the zipper was to fail. The thing is, though, it’s never failed so far, but what is a problem is that every time I take the backpack off I have to move those straps out of the way to unzip the backpack. But because they’re pretty hefty, they’re constantly getting in the way. When I move one, the other one falls over the bag and the cycle just continues over and over. It’s really hard to hold them both out of the way and unzip the bag at the same time. It’s a total pain! I’ve been looking for a new bag for a long time just because of this issue. Just my two cents! My Atlas Packs Athlete has a similar design, but I don't find the straps get in the way. When I open the back panel it just pushes the straps aside, although they are heavily padded hiking pack-style straps. There must be some subtle design difference between our bags in this regard.
Hey Tom, I had exactly that Manfrotto bag and loved it. I agree I wanted it a smidge smaller. So I sold it and bought the new McKinnon Nomatic X, which is PERFECT. Rear opening like this, same brilliant customization that you can configure in 1/3 sections, and the top section you can get into from the top OR the back. and just lots of super innovative touches. Oh, and feels mighty premium.
Wow! I’ve bought many bags/ duffles trying to find the perfect one for diapers/ baby stuff and also fits an R3. I use the backloader medium by manfrotto. Amazing! Thinking about buying a second one. Just to have to be honest. I like the separation between camera and the actual every day items I need to carry
My first camera bag was the Manfrotto about 6 years ago and still good today. I honestly never had a issue with the bag being loaded front. I think it’s better secure.

Look at the tenba fulton v2 14l. Smaller, rear camera access, half camera area half general area.
I’ve definitely been looking at that one! I really love Tenba’s bags but I’m not 100% sure about the roll/fold top.

Wandrd Prvke 31 is what you need.
I've heard nothing but good things about Wandrd bags, but I'm not a fan of roll-tops. Maybe I need to use on in person to see though?

And I've used it for years carrying my laptop, headphones, microphone, audio interface etc. But now that I'm getting into video, I'm starting all over, looking for a camera bag.

I honestly don’t know why I watched this entire video when I already have a camera bag that meets everything I need and want from a bag as someone who is both a photographer and a hiker and a park ranger in a national park who needs to carry a lot of gear both photography and other stuff I need, large amounts of water holding capacity, durable as all hell that will keep my gear safe in any terrain and weather, and is comfortable being worn for several miles on your back.
The Shimoda Explore v2 35L pretty much fits all of my needs and more. Plus the green version of the bag genuinely looks really fucking clean when worn in my Park Service uniform with the fun ranger flat hat.
Tho then again, that camera bag is definitely a premium one like the Peter McKinnon backpack. At some point I’m gonna need to find a quality smaller like 15-20 liter bag to can hold two camera bodies using a 24-70 and 70-000 and not require much more space than that other than maybe a large water bottle slot or two and a little bit of space on top to add a few things of whatever I need. Cuz not every time is it necessary to lug around 35L even tho I do utilize that space extremely efficiently.

20L really seems to be about the sweet spot, although 25 isn't too bad either.
After lugging a huge Manfrotto backpack throughout high school and community college, I blessed my back with a hiking backpack from REI. My camera would usually fit with my school supplies, books, and lunch. I would throw in a camera cube every now and then when I was primarily taking it out to shoot. Key takeaway from switching to a hiking backpack is that I love a rugged frame for my back, sternum and waist straps, and ways to cinch and secure everything down so nothing is bouncing around. Ever since I graduated, I haven't needed the 28l space that I have in my current bag. I was recently gifted the 15l Everyday Backpack from Peak Design, and am loving it so far.
One thing I do miss about having a Manfrotto bag is how modular they can be, and I gotta say that I love your set up. It's great that your camera can stay mic'd up in there.

I've noticed a lot of companies are not releasing "camera cubes" that can kind of work with any bag. Sort of a cool middle ground and then I guess you can just choose any bag to be a camera bag. I'm sure the hiking bag is super comfortable.
First of I make photos, no videos, but the best camera is always one that you have with you.
I have one camera with one zoomlens and it hangs on a strap of my regular dayhike bagpack with a Peak Design clip. I used it on challenging mountain hikes in the Dolomities and it works awsome, especially when you are on steep walkintrails and don’t want to take your backpack on and off every time.
I guess it is a lightweight point and shoot solution but it works fine. I really don’t get the dragging around of loads of gear, unless it is your job, but for hobby not. But I like to walk and take photos on the go, it is the walking first and photos second, not the other way round.
The Manfotto bag seems to be the best with other stuff in it as well, the shoulderstraps also look the best and nicest. Zippers last a long time if you keep them clean and lubricate them from time to time with some dry teflon spray, they wear down a lot slower then.
The straps on the side are not just for holding gear, when you packed your bag they can be used to compress your bag, you took one off but I suggest you put it back on again. This is common practice on hiking backpacks.
Thanks for the tip about the side strap! I did end up getting the Peak Design Capture Clip and it's really fantastic. I love having the camera super accessible while still being hands-free.
I use a Case Logic CPL-108GY. It's on the small side but, as mentioned, don't want to carry around every piece of equipment every day. It does hold a lot more accessory-type items in the front flap than I would've expected -- but not enough room for a laptop. If I ever grow up and need a better bag, this Pro Light looks like a great alternative.
It's been really awesome so far (this video was recorded a while ago, so I've had it for 5 months and really enjoy it)!

I've been impressed with Manfrotto bags lately. I picked up their hybrid backpack recently to bring with me in the Citation cockpit and I couldn't be happier with it. Good luck with the flight training, enjoy the process!

the first thing I noticed I liked about that bag was the straps being attached to the back. That gets them out of the way when you access the camera compartment. My thinktank bag has the straps attached the main shell and they are always in the way when going into the camera compartment
Yeah, I was thinking that would possibly be annoying. It’s definitely nice that they aren’t in the way.

I'm working on a pretty in-depth follow up to this, but for me, the Manfrotto is still currently leading the pack.
The Brevite is awesome though. I've definitely used that one the most/longest and it's been great.
I have the Tenba DNA 15 Backpack. I think it’s a really good option if you liked their messenger and it addresses some of the issues with the Brevite Jumper you mentioned.

You can add videos to fundraisers for approved nonprofits, and then if anyone donates, the cumulative total from all the videos goes to the organization. It’s pretty neat! I wanted to try it out on a few videos during the holidays.

Manfrotto backs are the worse. The brake very fast. Most comon failure are the zippers. At my internship we had them. When they bought them in 1 year manfrotto send 3 new ones per back. Because they have broken zippers.
Interesting. So far it's been 5 months and mine is holding up very well, but I'll keep an eye on the zippers. Maybe they've updated them in the new versions?
@@tombuck this was mainly on the video backpacks, we had these Manfrotto Pro Light Cinematic Backpack Balance and their tripod bags that is included by the tripod. Now we have replacement with camrade run & gun large and traditonal Portabrace tripod bag. The camrade bag is extremly large, even to big for and i am arround 6ft 5 (1,94cm) but they are way better build. Waterproof ykk zippers. Head of tech also my intern supervisor has bought these and looked only and the zippers 🤣
I mostly use a shoulder camera bags since I started having a camcorder.
The first one was a free Sony camcorder bag, It was really small when I first got it with the camcorder and I used it for like 2-3 years until I changed to a Caden (The smaller one) Which I used for 2 years and changed to a bigger one (Caden D13) which is the current one that I'm using to store my camcorder and my other stuff in.
And if with the camera backpacks which they can store more of the stuff, But it's not suitable for my camcorder somehow. I still don't even know why it is like that.
Maybe it's because I've been sticking with this type of shoulder camera bags now since the day I started having a camcorder. But I do still I have to move on with the same type of camera bag all over again, I think it's fine for me now. 😊

I have a Tenba shoulder bag, which is really awesome, but I guess as I got more gear I felt like it was giving me a bit of shoulder pain and I like how a backpack distributes the weight. I REALLY wish they just had a backpack version of my messenger bag because it's so nice and super durable.
@@tombuck And yeah, My small Sony camcorder bag is the only one that it's really compact in size compared to my other ones.
Which it makes it more eazy and quick to organize stuff in there, And even I can put my tripod on there too! (Especially in a gap where I can put my tripod in)

Speaking to the part about the back coming open and the strap placement… I’ve got an older Manfrotto photo backpack that opens in the back like the one you have. However, the straps are placed so that the zipper is against your back. Granted, it’s probably safer if the zipper was to fail. The thing is, though, it’s never failed so far, but what is a problem is that every time I take the backpack off I have to move those straps out of the way to unzip the backpack. But because they’re pretty hefty, they’re constantly getting in the way. When I move one, the other one falls over the bag and the cycle just continues over and over. It’s really hard to hold them both out of the way and unzip the bag at the same time. It’s a total pain! I’ve been looking for a new bag for a long time just because of this issue. Just my two cents! My Atlas Packs Athlete has a similar design, but I don't find the straps get in the way. When I open the back panel it just pushes the straps aside, although they are heavily padded hiking pack-style straps. There must be some subtle design difference between our bags in this regard.
Hey Tom, I had exactly that Manfrotto bag and loved it. I agree I wanted it a smidge smaller. So I sold it and bought the new McKinnon Nomatic X, which is PERFECT. Rear opening like this, same brilliant customization that you can configure in 1/3 sections, and the top section you can get into from the top OR the back. and just lots of super innovative touches. Oh, and feels mighty premium.

Wow! I’ve bought many bags/ duffles trying to find the perfect one for diapers/ baby stuff and also fits an R3. I use the backloader medium by manfrotto. Amazing! Thinking about buying a second one. Just to have to be honest. I like the separation between camera and the actual every day items I need to carry
My first camera bag was the Manfrotto about 6 years ago and still good today. I honestly never had a issue with the bag being loaded front. I think it’s better secure.
