I have watched many videos on YT on how to find your style. Some good and some bad. This was clear, concise and to the point. Great visuals and explanations. I am what I call a Feminine Classic. Sadly, I spent too many years trying to to be trendy instead of myself. I knew it though when I was 12, I was a girlie girl. Then I hit high school and from then on until I was late 30s to early 40s realized I was not happy in my clothes. I listened to all the videos and realized I was the HAPPIEST in dresses and skirts and girlie items. I would tell any young lady be yourself with style because that makes you the most beautiful no matter that style because you are being the true you.

I've fluctuated quite a bit over the years, but currently I'm a classic feminine.
Last year I decided to banish synthetic fabrics from my wardrobe and it totally upgraded my look. Suddenly I'm obsessed with silk and cashmere.

I guess I defined my style during my working life as Classic with a Twist, the twist being a thrifted statement jacket or coat, or a pop of orange somewhere. 72 now and enjoying an active retirement, I seem to have morphed into a Sporty Chic vibe (with a side order of Eclectic Urban Aunt, which allows for statement thrifted pieces, being mindful that wearing vintage in my 70s can be aging).
Getting dressed is fun, made easier with quality basics. A one-in/one-out policy (no new hangers) avoids the stress of wardrobe overload as I'm not comfortable with clutter or "orphan" garments.
Am so enjoying your videos. Having just found you, I may need to indulge in a little binge watching. I promise not comment on all of them!

Great comment and thank you for sharing your perspective on vintage styles being aging. I've been wondering about that. I wore a lot of vintage in my 30s, and now that I'm 65 I realize I'd better choose pieces carefully.

As a guy i do a street/ preppy thing i started with in the late 70s. Hip hop did a version with polo and timbs in the 90s and called it original but i did the same thing it 2 decades earlier. I still do it today. Still get compliments. A good eye and a good body does it. Im not bragging. I dont make these fits...that's the designers who are amazing....i just buy the shit and wear it right.

This was enlightening. I realized I can be a little bit of all the styles. But most strongly influenced by boho and classic. I love cowboy boots and frindge and flowing skirts but also tailored clothing depending on the occasion. Other times an edgy jacket or over sized blazer works. It often depends on the occasion. Where was the sporty look? I am in my late sixties and oftentimes find a sweat shirt and sweat pants comfy and appropriate. I have found all of these styles useful and fun over my life I have leaned more towards one or another but still embrace them all. First time viewer will view a few more before I subscribe. Thanks for a great video.

I love 70s and 80s style. I was a child/teenager in the 70s and a young professional in the 80s, and clothes are so fun at those ages. Growing up in the 70s, I loved everything the college girls wore: bell-bottom jeans, boots, turtlenecks and a brown leather jacket was a great look that became classic then, as did a great skirt suit in the 80s. Nearly everything looks great on a slim, youthful figure!

  • @kimberlyperrotis8962

I’m definitely in the Classic camp, but with a lot of soft fabrics and textures, like silk and suede. I like to push toward Preppy/Academic a bit, except that I don’t like Preppy novelty prints, like those with anchors, hearts, lobsters, etc. I don’t like lace, embellishments or frou-frou details, I like to keep things tailored/structured, but soft. I could hardly find a single dress last summer that wasn’t prairie style, with all those tiers and ruffles, but I wore those when I was 10, in 1970! Once was enough to get the Laura Ingalls out of my system. As a Californian, I tried the super-popular Boho/Coachella style for a while, but never really felt at home in it, so it’s back to my classics. No high heels, ever. If a woman wore high-heeled, pointed pumps here, people would treat her with scorn and laughter, we know how absurd and pretentious they are. San Francisco is a major walking city, shoes like that haven’t been seen for at least three decades. Only recently have we really adopted sneakers for city wear, though, our insider rule was that residents wore proper, but practical, leather footwear, usually booties, and only tourists worn sneakers (and sweatshirts). Tourist logo sweatshirts and windbreakers sell like crazy here because tourists show up in summer, logically expecting and packing for summer weather, but they always freeze!

My personal style is based on the uniforms I wore to school.
    Blazer.
    White Shirt.
    Skirt.
This is the foundation of my basic wardrobe.
Navy blazers are a mainstay and a couple of good ones never go out of style.
White oversized button downs or a solid white v-neck tee. ( sometimes black or navy tee)
No prints except for plaid in the winter and in summer a brightly printed Lilly Pulitzer dress.
A good investment is a camel hair coat for winter.
Shoes: Weejun loafers; Repetto Ballet flats. Rondini sandals for summer.
    Nothing ostentatious.

I've discovered that I am a blend of minimalist and edgy yet have several outfits that are perfect for various moods or activities as sporty, feminine, or classic. I have mostly natural fibers, wools, cashmere, and blends for one season, and linen, silk, cotton, or ramie for the hotter months. My capsule is neutral but I love to add splashes of color. When I stand in front of my closet in the morning I love the spontaneity of putting together an outfit to fit my mood and how I'm going to spend the day. Well I am going to have to say yes. One day I’m totally boho and feel beautiful and so comfy in my skin. The. Other days I’m so minimal with just a plain tee shirt white or black solids. And a pair of jeans. In summer it’s a midi modest dress that bliiowy and flows in a breeze while I garden and wear a low casual Birkenstock sandal or barefoot. Or I will pick a pretty small floral shirt mostly in neutral colors and sometimes a pop of feminine color. And. Pair of worn in denim shorts or overalls. I’m so me when I dress like this. So carefree and yet feeling beautiful. I love all natural materials like brushed double cottons or linens and plain cotton or flax. In winter it’s a wool or blend sweaters with a pair of jeans with booties and. Thin wool or alpaca socks I know it sounds plain but that’s how I’m wired I guess. I also love the dresses like prairie kind or that trend from a show I can’t remember the name of. I really am not a trendy person. But occasionally if a piece catches my eye I will try it out. One day I want a capsule wardrobe so bad. I don’t know where to start with that though.

Classic minimal with some preppy thrown in, usually in the winter. What style is it when we always consider "comfort" when picking out textures and design ? Minimal? In the winter I have (for years) invested in long high quality cardigans and worn them over leggings or fitted pants, either cashmere knee length or Pendleton knee length cardigans ...I have a much harder time dressing for spring and summer. I certainly struggle with vacation dressing in the summer!

    • @EricaBallStyle

I think comfort can fall more into the minimal category. But really any of these personal styles can be comfortable and casual too. They don't need to be dressy. This video felt very objective!!!

I wouldn’t say trendy is a style because each trendy piece can fall into different style categories. Leather coats could be trendy and that’s edgy whereas sweater vests could trend and that’s preppy. Someone who (only) wears trendy styles is choosing what to wear based on others vs their own personal style which is what these categories are trying to help you find. I would replace trendy with avant garde or maximalist.

My style is classic and I do wear prints, classic ones like dots, stripes, checks/plaids, equestrian, Baroque and carefully selected flora and fauna prints. Classic is not the same as Minimal, which is what you describe as Classic here, Classic includes prints. Classic styling is about the traditional tailoring and styles, mostly.

Thanks for your comment Kimberly. I'm sharing my experience of styling women for over 17 years from NY to LA and for tv and film. This is my perspective on classic style. Minimal style to me is defined by relaxed fabrics and silhouettes and an "unstyled" element, while classic is more streamlined silhouettes, luxury fabrics and timeless.

These personal style videos never work for me because they use “aesthetics”. It’s the thing I hate about fashion, that they try to fit you into an aesthetic. But every aesthetic has different versions that come from different elements. I like the style influencers that focus on the elements that create that aesthetic. Once I was able to do that I basically created and named my own aesthetic. I’ll never like or fit into the aesthetics that are popular. I wish influencers would focus on individualism instead of categories. I think a lot of lost girls like myself struggle because we keep trying to find the style or aesthetic that works for us. Very few “stylists” know how to get to the core of why an aesthetic appeals to us but never seems to work and always feels a little “off”. It’s because the aesthetic isn’t the style at all. We call something “goth” but for some people that means one thing and for others it means a different thing. Same with grunge or any other style. If you can’t get to the core of what it is about a specific look that appeals to you, you’ll keep trying aesthetics and always feel lost. That’s what trend followers do. And so many style quizzes just feed into that. Over the years I’ve watched stylists claiming to help people find their personal style but they are always wearing whatever is trendy. Theres nothing personal about it. They are following trends because they actually have no idea what drives people’s decision making and whether or not an outfit works or doesn’t. (Like the dressing for body shapes which also fails many people). To me this video represents why fashion fails so many women, and why “experts” are often the worst to listen to because they think in terms of aesthetics instead of helping women create their own style aesthetic. It makes women look put together or acceptable to others, but they will never quite feel right in the outfit and they won’t know why. I used Elle Jeans style roots and Style Thoughts by Rita Style Key and others to make my own aesthetic. Those two influencers helped me realize why all the other fashion advice failed me. Then I adapted my own aesthetic for my color season palette and my Kibbe body type and Kitchener essences and put it all together to make my own aesthetic that fits my coloring and body type (NOT body shape!) and now videos like these that categorize style types drive me insane because saying “feminine” or “minimalist” is meaningless. There are different meanings to those words and if you don’t get at the core of what it is about a feminine look that appeals to you or works for you, you’ll always be lost! Just my opinion. I think a lot of stylists don’t even realize they are just following the mainstream trends rather than helping people find a unique style. These videos are “which box do you fit into” and then they tell you to put your own unique spin on it, but the core of what you chose isn’t defined so that will never work.

Fashion and style is a journey for most women. It sounds like it was a hard path for you like it is for many women (including myself) to get to where you are today, where you have found the style and ideas that work for you. As someone in my 40's who has been styling women, men, and teens for over 16 years and who uses my MA in Psychology (I used to be a therapist) as a foundation in my work with my clients, I definitely do not define myself as someone who is an influencer/trend follower etc. or am driven by those things.
As this is a video platform and I'm unable to work with women and their individual style struggles 1-on-1, I can only offer style advice in a general sense. For some women knowing what their personal style is helps them curate a closet of clothes they'll actually love to wear while saving time, money, and frustration. This video will not work or apply to everyone and like most things in life, I think it's valuable to take the information that works for you and leave what doesn't behind. I am happy you have found what works for you to love your style and wardrobe. That is my hope for all women. ❤

I still can't decide if I have a style or not. I know that I am definitely not androgynous or trendy.
I have a lot of blouses, and some of them have that sort of rounded sleeve. Is that vintage perhaps because it is associated with the Victorian times?
I also have a lot of slim trousers, which I never saw in these type of videos related to style. Is that vintage as well? Or edgy?
I can somehow relate to the colourful pastel part in the feminine style but I normally gravitate towards trousers rather than skirts except for occasions where I wear a dress.
Then my casual dresses are more of a boho style.
I am not sure if I relate to the classic or not. I was with you with the timeless and high quality fabric pieces. Then you mentioned neutral colours and tailored pieces which is not me. And I do have a few patterned pieces so I'm semi-classic I guess?
Preppy, not sure again. I do have one shirt which I like to dress under cotton tops during winter to have a more elongated top. So I guess I'm semi-preppy as well.
Perhaps my trousers are edgy? And I do have a QUEEN black t-shirt which I like to wear with black trousers which I feel edgy in.
And finallyyy, if minimal is simple, then I am definitely NOT IT!!!
    So you have a vintage, feminine, semi-boho, semi-classic, semi-preppy, semi-edgy gal 😂😂 that's 6 out of 9 categories. 😂😂😂
Jokes aside, I still think your video is well-explained. I just don't think I have a style. It's whatever I think is appropriate and comfortable I guess.

    • @EricaBallStyle
      @EricaBallStyle  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thanks for sharing Elise. As long as you love what your style is (even if it falls into 6 of these types) that's the goal. Maybe your style is eclectic and you love experimenting with many types of styles. That's not a common one, so it isn't highlighted here. But if that's the style you feel great in, then I'm all for it. 😊
